First Impressions
The Bolster sits on a quiet square that most tourists walk right past β and honestly, that’s part of its charm. I stumbled across this apartment-style hotel while wandering through Amsterdam City Centre, and the understated entrance almost fooled me into thinking it was just another residential building. The lobby feels more like stepping into someone’s stylish home than a typical hotel, which sets the tone for what’s actually a pretty clever concept.
The Setup
What makes The Bolster different is that you’re essentially getting your own space β each unit comes with a proper kitchen setup that goes way beyond the usual hotel kettle situation. I mean, there’s a full-sized fridge, stovetop, and all the basics you’d need if you wanted to grab groceries from the Albert Heijn down the street. The room layouts vary quite a bit, but mine had this nice separation between the sleeping area and a small living space that made it feel less cramped than your typical Amsterdam accommodation.
Location Reality Check
Thorbeckeplein isn’t one of those Instagram-famous Amsterdam squares, but that’s honestly a good thing. You’re still walking distance from all the main stuff β the Rijksmuseum is maybe fifteen minutes on foot, and you can easily stroll to the canals without dealing with the crowds that swarm around Leidseplein. The neighborhood has this lived-in feel where you’ll see actual locals doing their daily thing, not just tourists stumbling between coffee shops.
What Actually Works
The three-star rating feels about right β this isn’t trying to be fancy, but everything works properly and the space is clean and functional. The Wi-Fi was solid (important for catching up on work), and the heating actually kept up with Amsterdam’s unpredictable weather. I appreciated having control over my own space rather than dealing with hotel schedules for everything. There’s no on-site restaurant, but with that kitchen setup, you’re sort of expected to figure out your own meals anyway.
Why Guests Love It
Look, if you want room service and daily housekeeping, this probably isn’t your place. But if you’re planning to stay in Amsterdam for more than just a quick weekend and you want to feel less like a tourist in a hotel bubble, The Bolster makes sense. The price point is reasonable for what you get β especially considering Amsterdam’s accommodation costs β and having your own kitchen means you’re not stuck paying restaurant prices for every single meal. It’s the kind of place that works well if you’re comfortable doing your own thing and just need a solid base in the city.
Amsterdam’s apartments welcome long stays with rooftop terraces, boat rental access, and tram links to hidden courtyards.

What Our Guests Say
We loved it but stairs were a challenge Location, staff, comfort
What could be improved: Stairs were a killer
clean, friendly, location great for exploring Hotel is centrally located, lots of bars and restaurants to eat at, all just a stones throw from the hotel,
Beds were very comfortable, rooms clean and tidy. Staff friendly
What could be improved: Lots of stairs, but this is Amsterdam and is the norm. π
Comfortable and Friendly The room was comfortable and exactly what we needed. The staff were lovely, and the building was beautiful.
What could be improved: The only thing I did not like was the shower had nothing to stop it from leaking all over the bathroom, but putting a towel down stopped it, and it was all good!
Great location and very friendly and helpful staff The receptionist is wonderful!!
Location is great and room is comfortable and clean
Superb I had a wonderful stay the rooms were clean and the staff was always helpful and welcoming
Great value for money in a super location, would stay again :) Location and great staff members
What could be improved: I enjoyed every aspect but I wouldnβt recommend for those with physical disabilities as there are a lot of steep narrow stairs
Great location with superb friendly staff Location and. Staff
Cool room soft beds Comfortable beds and efficient bathroom. The personless check-in was clear. Even though there was music on the ground floor, our room (2nd floor) was reasonably quiet. Exceptional airconditioning, worked like a charm in 30 C degree weather.
What could be improved: The pillows were a bit stiff. Good to know that the stairs are a bit steep (not a problem for us with our backpack).
Superb The team was very friendly and supportive fast check in
Perfect for a short comfortable stay! The location was great, within walking distance from everything and there was a tram just outside that could take you anywhere.
The staff were so lovely also very accommodating and friendly!
Very clean and cozy and loved the room design
What could be improved: The only very small thing was the bar underneath the hotel, of course thereβs nothing the staff can do about the music, it was not so loud and did not really impact our stay but just be aware that there will be some noise at night.
