First Impressions

Walking up to Hotel Atlas Vondelpark on Van Eeghenstraat, you immediately get that “this is exactly where I want to be” feeling. It’s one of those three-star places that doesn’t try to be something it’s not — just a solid, well-run hotel in what’s honestly one of the best spots in Amsterdam. The building has that classic Dutch charm without being overly touristy, and you can tell right away that locals actually live and work in this neighborhood.

The Oud Zuid Advantage

Here’s what I love about staying here — you’re in Oud Zuid, which locals will tell you is where they’d choose to live if money wasn’t an issue. The Vondelpark is literally around the corner (hence the name), and I mean that quite literally — it’s maybe a two-minute walk. But what really makes this location special is how it puts you within easy reach of both the museum quarter and the more authentic parts of the city. You can walk to the Rijksmuseum in about ten minutes, but you’re also close enough to neighborhoods where actual Amsterdammers grab their morning coffee.

The Room Experience

The room I stayed in was exactly what you’d expect from a well-maintained three-star — clean, comfortable, and thoughtfully designed without any unnecessary frills. The windows are decent-sized, which matters more than you’d think in Amsterdam where some hotels feel like you’re staying in a closet. What impressed me was the attention to small details — good lighting for reading, enough outlets near the bed, and a bathroom that actually has space to move around. It’s not going to wow you with designer touches, but honestly, when you’re spending most of your time exploring the city, that’s perfectly fine.

Getting Around

The tram connections from this area are actually fantastic — something you don’t always realize until you’re trying to get somewhere specific. There’s a stop just a few blocks away that connects you to Central Station and the main shopping areas without having to transfer. I also discovered that having the Vondelpark so close means you can cut through it to reach different parts of the city, which is way more pleasant than walking along busy streets. The neighborhood has that perfect balance where you feel like you’re in a residential area, but you’re never more than a five-minute walk from cafes, small shops, and decent restaurant options.
