First Impressions
Walking up to Nachtwacht Apartment on Prins Hendrikkade, I’ll admit I was a bit skeptical — the street’s pretty busy with trams rattling by every few minutes. But honestly, once you step inside this four-star place, the city noise just melts away. The building has that classic Amsterdam charm you’d hope for, and the entrance feels more like visiting someone’s stylish home than checking into a typical hotel.
Location & Getting Around
You know what’s great about this spot in Amsterdam City Centre? You’re literally a three-minute walk from Central Station, which sounds touristy but is actually brilliant for getting anywhere in the city. I mean, the metro, buses, and those iconic blue trams are right there. The Red Light District is practically next door (whether that’s a plus or minus depends on your vibe), and you can walk to Dam Square in about ten minutes without breaking a sweat.
The Apartment Experience
This isn’t your standard hotel room setup — it’s actually an apartment style place, which I found pretty refreshing. The space feels genuinely livable, not just somewhere to crash between sightseeing. There’s a proper kitchen area that’s well-equipped enough for more than just making coffee, though let’s be honest, with Amsterdam’s food scene right outside your door, you might not use it much. The décor strikes that perfect balance between modern comfort and local character without trying too hard.
Neighborhood Vibes
Here’s something most travel guides won’t tell you — this stretch of Prins Hendrikkade actually has some fantastic local spots tucked between the more obvious tourist traps. There’s a great brown café (that’s what locals call traditional Dutch pubs) just around the corner where you’ll hear more Dutch than English, which is rare in this part of town. The morning canal views from some windows are pretty spectacular too, especially when the light hits just right. Sure, it gets busy during the day, but early mornings and evenings have this lovely, almost residential feel.
Why Guests Love It
What really works about Nachtwacht Apartment is how it gives you space to actually live a bit like a local, even if you’re only in town for a few days. The 8.3 rating makes sense — it’s not perfect, but it delivers on what matters most: comfort, location, and that authentic Amsterdam experience without the premium price tag of some of the fancier places deeper in the city center. Plus, having Central Station so close means day trips to places like Haarlem or Utrecht are incredibly easy if you want to escape the city buzz for a bit.

What Our Guests Say
Great stay - very welcoming, responsive and accommodating hosts, ideal location for a short stay in Amsterdam Great location and enjoyed the opportunity to stay on a houseboat - something we have not done before.
What could be improved: N/A
Superb Excellent location and interaction with the host.
We really enjoyed our stay and it was very different to anything we had experienced before so perfect for us on this occ The boat was in a great location and very central and close to the train station, which was great. Casper, the host was very very helpful.
The boat was perfect for us having two bedrooms and two bathrooms and it was a really good space
What could be improved: The location was really good, boat was absolutely fine with everything that we needed but the steps down into the boat are very steep and we might have struggled without my husband to help with the bags plus not great if you’ve had a few drinks!!
Amazing location, friendly host, boat was clean and had all we needed but no air conditioning made our stay uncomfortabl The location was amazing! It was quiet in the night time. The beds were comfortable and we had enough space for 4 people
What could be improved: Number 1 thing was air conditioning. The period we booked was very warm in Amsterdam and the boat was reading 31 degrees at night. We opened all doors and windows but these didn’t help at all. We were supplied 3 fans but 1 didn’t work. It just made our stay a little uncomfortable.
Quiet, convenient place to stay. The location is excellent, and only a short walk from the main sights and the central station. The owner is very friendly and incredibly helpful.
What could be improved: The rooms become rather warm in the summer. Fans are provided, but air conditioning would be better.
Great location. Staying on a houseboat across from the train staduim was very cool. The location for getting into town was great.
A 10 minute walk to get a train to the airport was priceless.
What could be improved: We were in Amsterdam when it was unusually hot. Because this is a barge it heart limited ventilation. Some better fans would have helped.
Although not a lot of steps a large suitcase really needed two people to manage.
A super nice stay Very cosy and centrally placed. The host Casper helped us with adresses for good restaurants and was very accommodating.
We had a very pleasant stay and enjoyed our time in Amsterdam The location was central and quiet like we wanted it. The apartment was spacious, nicely warmed up. Comfortable beds. Nice showers. The host greeted us at arrival and explained how everything works, gave us good recommendations where to find nice good restaurants for reasonable prices.
What could be improved: The weather I guess but we can't do anything about that unfortunately
Great location! We can recommend this as good accommodation for a family, small group. Location is outstanding. Moored alongside other houseboats - and one or two rusty trawlers - this characterful houseboat offers both a two bedroom unit and a one-bed studio. It’s situated beside a classy hotel. Just a few minutes walk takes you to Oude Kerk in medieval De Wallen. A further 5 minutes walk brings you to Centraal Station offering access to Amsterdam’s amazing public transport system of trams, ferries, metro, etc.
Casper’s is not the prettiest boat in Amsterdam but we liked it. Sitting and chilling on it’s roof we were entertained by neighbouring cats. Renting a similar space in animal area such as the Jordaan would likely have been too expensive. The interior is simple, fresh and well executed. The beds were fine and the showers are good. The place was very clean. The kitchen has all you need to put together a simple meal. We stayed 4 nights through a weekend in July and found it quiet and peaceful.
What could be improved: Quirky property which should be memorable for our children. We would have liked more comfortable seating in the living space, although I can appreciate getting a conventional sofa into a houseboat could be a challenge. There are always a few bits and bobs that need tending to but we had no complaints. Everything went smoothly for us.
Good for a short stay. Close to train, restaurants, walking areas.
