First Impressions
Walking up to House of Freddy on Fredriksplein, you’d honestly miss it if you weren’t looking — and that’s actually part of its charm. This three-star boutique spot sits quietly in one of Amsterdam‘s most understated squares, tucked away from the tourist chaos but still right in the heart of everything. The building itself has that classic Amsterdam narrow-house vibe, with a modern twist that doesn’t try too hard to impress.
The Neighborhood Advantage
Here’s what I love about this location — you’re literally a two-minute walk from the Flower Market, but you’re staying on a square where locals actually hang out. Fredriksplein has this great little café scene that most tourists never discover, and there’s a genuine neighborhood feel that’s getting harder to find in the city center. The tram connections from here are fantastic too; you can reach Museumplein or the Jordaan without dealing with the crowds around Dam Square.
The Room Experience
The room I stayed in was compact but thoughtfully designed — think smart use of space rather than cramped. The beds are surprisingly comfortable (which isn’t always a given in Amsterdam’s older buildings), and they’ve managed to fit in decent storage without making everything feel cluttered. The bathrooms are small, sure, but they’re modern and the water pressure is actually good, which honestly made my day after some previous Amsterdam hotel experiences.
Practical Perks
What surprised me was how well they handle the basics here. The Wi-Fi works everywhere, the air conditioning actually keeps things cool during those sticky summer days, and the staff genuinely knows the neighborhood — they pointed me toward this amazing Indonesian restaurant three blocks away that I never would have found otherwise. There’s no on-site parking, but they’ll sort you out with nearby options if you need them, and honestly, you probably won’t need a car staying here anyway.
Why Guests Love It
House of Freddy works because it gets the fundamentals right without any unnecessary fuss. You’re not paying for a rooftop bar or marble lobby — you’re getting a solid base in an excellent location with staff who care about your stay. The 8.1 rating makes perfect sense when you consider what you’re actually getting versus what you’re paying. It’s the kind of place where you sleep well, start your day with a good coffee from the corner café, and spend your time exploring Amsterdam rather than hanging around the hotel.

What Our Guests Say
Brilliant Location, Excellent room & bathroom, delicious tea & coffee Brilliant location, surrounded more by locals than tourists
What could be improved: Not sure if it had been noted about the stairs, we were on the 3rd floor, would defintely as for 1st floor if we can again, not as fit as we use to be.
Cozy! The location was perfect! Close to all the important places and easy to go everywhere with public transport.
What could be improved: There is some noise in the mornings and sometimes during the night but it was bearable.
Perfect, very clean and comfortable, we had an excellent stay and would definitely book here again. The hotel was very clean and the communication from the staff was fab, we arrived very late and whatsapped the staff to let them know and they had left our key out for us as there was going to be nobody around, check in was super easy. Room was cleaned every day with fresh towels, would definitely recommend.
What could be improved: Nothing, it is very steep stairs like it says in the description but didn’t bother us.
Superb Was fine ....stairs a bit of skill needed for them but we managed....clean.. staff pleasant ...
I would definitely stay here again. Location was perfect, close to the train, one of the best grocery store right next door, walking distance to everything. We didn’t take busses during our stay. My room had a balcony and we kept the door open to get fresh air, the are was super safe and clean. We got towels changed everyday.
What could be improved: The steep stairs, but the amazing staff helped us carry bags upstairs, we got super lucky. In general Amsterdam style with steep stairs.
Superb Great location, great sized room and nice little touches. Ideal if you want a comfy place to rest your head and fine normal hotels over stimulating. Hosts very friendly
What could be improved: This place has no staffed reception- I didn't mind it at all but please bear this in mind.
Exceptional service, amazing location, super comfortable room The staff is exceptional, and the room was adorable, comfy, and perfect for a couple. There is easy access to public transportation and walking distance to the best of Amersterdam.
What could be improved: The bathroom is small, but that is to be expected in Europe, so we had no issues with it. Just more for letting others know, because it's annoying when I see people complain about bathroom size when in Europe.
Superb It’s clean, the location is good, there’s a supermarket next door
What could be improved: The room is small
Comfortable and warm with a pretty room We had a balcony in our room which was really nice and coffee and tea topped up everyday along with cleaning.
Lovely spot for a lovely price Lovely spot, great price, towel swap everyday love the additional free coffee and tea.
What could be improved: Needs atleast one small coffee table :)
