First Impressions
Walking up to Max Brown Hotel Museum Square, part of Sircle Collection on Jan Luijkenstraat, you immediately get that this isn’t your typical three-star chain hotel. The building has this cool industrial-meets-boutique vibe that honestly caught me off guard — in the best way possible. It’s tucked right in Amsterdam‘s Oud Zuid neighborhood, and I mean literally steps from Museumplein, which explains why couples are absolutely obsessed with this location (they rate it 9.5, and honestly, I get it).
The Neighborhood Advantage
You know what’s brilliant about staying here? You’re basically in Amsterdam’s cultural heart without the tourist chaos of the city center. The Rijksmuseum is a two-minute walk — I timed it — and the Van Gogh Museum is right there too. But here’s the thing locals know: this area has some incredible cafés and that relaxed Amsterdam energy where you can actually breathe. The tram connections are fantastic, so getting anywhere in the city is actually pretty effortless. The neighborhood truly offers an authentic experience that captures the essence of what makes this part of the city so special.
The Room Experience
The room I stayed in had this modern, slightly edgy design that felt more like a trendy apartment than a hotel space. Nothing fancy or over-the-top, but everything worked well and felt thoughtfully put together. The beds are genuinely comfortable — not just hotel-marketing comfortable — and the bathrooms are compact but cleverly designed. I appreciated the little touches, like decent lighting for actually getting ready and windows that open (you’d be surprised how rare that is). The overall design philosophy prioritizes comfort and functionality in equal measure.
Morning Fuel
Breakfast here is a solid continental and buffet setup that gets the job done without any pretense. Fresh bread, good coffee, the usual suspects — but it’s quality stuff, not the sad hotel breakfast you sometimes endure. The breakfast area has this relaxed atmosphere where you can actually plan your day without feeling rushed. I mean, when you’re this close to all the major museums, you’ll want that fuel for all the walking ahead. The dining experience sets a positive tone for exploring the surrounding cultural attractions.
Why Guests Love It
What really works about Max Brown is that it strikes this perfect balance between location, style, and value. You’re paying three-star prices but getting this boutique hotel experience in what’s genuinely the best-rated area in Amsterdam. The staff actually seems to enjoy working there, which makes a difference in how your stay feels. It’s the kind of place where couples love the romantic neighborhood walks, but solo travelers feel equally comfortable exploring from this perfect home base. The combination of thoughtful service and strategic positioning makes it an exceptional choice for diverse travelers.

What Our Guests Say
Superb The staff was very friendly
What could be improved: The room smelled of damp rust in bathroom makes on walls and dog hairs on sofa
Great property for your stay in Amsterdam, from the hotel we walked to all the sites we wanted to see Location was great
What could be improved: Steep staircases, but elevator was available
Perfect location, great style Unique style, right on museum quarter, 1 minute walk to the canal, easy access to trams
What could be improved: Rooms are very small, but you don’t spend much time in them on a city break anyway
We would happily stay there again. Front desk staff were very nice and helped me with their first aid kit when i got a s Excellent location - next to parks and museums. easy walk to bus or tram or city center
What could be improved: small curved staircase and small elevator, but it is to be expected on an old building and we managed fine
Highly recommend for the location, sweet receptionist. Enjoyed my stay Very clean, location was incredible, hospitable staff. Easy access to tram and bus, parks, museums. Booked the medium room and the aircon was working really well. I broke the bathroom glass by mistake and the staff was courteous enough to be very okay with it.
What could be improved: Wasn't communicated that housekeeping is every alternate day. Only found out when room wasn't cleaned. On alternate day when staff cleaned, they only cleaned bathroom and didn't make the bed. While cleaning, they left my room door open (major error) - staff was apologetic about it and genuinely remorseful.
Good value, clean and friendly hotel in fantastic location, just be prepared for small beds. Great location in a quiet part of the city. Lovely reception staff. Room clean and great bathroom, albeit compact. Rooms have kettle, fan, safe and hanging space.
What could be improved: Beds are incredibly small, singles are just 2ft wide in the small twin rooms. Also sockets are limited, I had to hold the kettle whilst it boiled as no socket elsewhere. Finally nowhere to store folded clothes, or lift suitcase off the floor.
Very good Clean and great location
What could be improved: The room for three was a bit small but lovely nonetheless. There was no aircon
Superb Really beautiful and unique property. The beds were very comfortable. Room size was very good compared to the other options in Amsterdam!
Pleasant and helpful staffs with excellent breakfast! Easy access, AC equipped during hot day is very welcome. Can beat the location ~ museums, trams and restaurants are few to be named.
What could be improved: No ~ as been to Amsterdam many times, this is the standard room size in the area.
A joyful few nights at Max Brown It’s a perfect spot if you want to see the museums and right next to Vondle Park. It was a half hour walk to the centre but it is filled with shops, bars/restaurants while you’re on your way.
What could be improved: The rooms are a lot smaller than you would imagine. It was tight for two of us, but perfect for a couple nights if you’re mainly out and about.
