First Impressions
Hotel Van Gogh sits on a quiet residential street in Oud Zuid, and honestly, I walked past it twice before realizing this was the place. It’s housed in a traditional Amsterdam townhouse — the kind with tall windows and that classic brick facade you see all over the neighborhood. There’s something refreshingly understated about it, especially when you’re used to those flashy chain hotels near the center.
The Neighborhood Feel
You know what I love about this spot? You’re actually staying where locals live. Van de Veldestraat runs through one of Amsterdam‘s more authentic residential areas, and I mean that in the best way possible. The Vondelpark is literally a five-minute walk — I found myself cutting through it every morning just because I could. The Museumplein with all the major museums is close enough that you’ll walk there without thinking about it, but far enough that you escape the tourist crowds when you come home.
Inside the Hotel
This three-star place gets the basics right without trying to be something it’s not. My room was compact — well, this is Amsterdam, so that’s expected — but thoughtfully arranged. The bed was actually comfortable (you’d be surprised how often that’s not the case), and there was enough space to spread out my stuff without feeling cramped. The bathroom was modern and clean, though if you’re tall, you might bump your head on the sloped ceiling.
What Actually Matters
The staff here seem to genuinely care about what they’re doing. The guy at reception gave me directions to a local market I never would’ve found otherwise, and when I mentioned I was looking for a good Indonesian place, he wrote down three recommendations on the back of a business card. The breakfast isn’t fancy — continental style with decent coffee and fresh bread — but the restaurant area has these big windows that let in amazing morning light.
Why Guests Love It
Here’s the thing about Hotel Van Gogh: it delivers exactly what it promises without any pretense. You get a clean, comfortable base in a genuinely nice part of town for a reasonable price. The trams are right there when you need them, but you can also walk to most places you’d want to see. I stayed here for four nights and never once felt like I was missing out on anything by not being in the touristy center — actually, I preferred coming back to this quieter street after a day of sightseeing.

What Our Guests Say
Great hotel if you travel by any means other than a car The room was lovely overall, lots of space and everything catered for. The hotel is close to the Van Gogh museum and the Rijksmuseum.
What could be improved: Although the hotel is not really at fault, it is right next to an infant school, and the children play out for hours, which makes it very noisy. The hotel has no parking facilities, and parking fees on the local streets are astranomical (between £25 for a couple of hours and £60 a day), which should be considered when booking this hotel (when travelling by car)
Great location, clean, accommodated families, worth every penny to be so close to museums and transportation to southern The proximity to museums and tram. Fun theme, very clean
What could be improved: Some noise late at night or early in am.
Good Location, vending machines,
What could be improved: Little tin down like permanent junk in the shower glass, twin bed was very small, like barely a twin both skinny and short.
Excellent location Excellent location in lovely neighborhood. 2 min walk to trams & airport bus. 3 min walk to supermarket. Great for our group of 4.
Great location Location, elevators, comfy beds, clean bathroom. Catch the no 2 or 12 tram straight into the centre (Dam Square). Albert Heijn nearby and the museums on your door step. Lovely bistro next door.
What could be improved: It’s fine for a short stay
Good Easy location, trams were almost at the door step, and most of the attractions are within walking distance. Comfortable beds and reasonable sized room. Luggage storage was helpful too.
Very good Great location
Good breakfast options
Comfortable beds
Storage for luggage
What could be improved: Reception wasn't too friendly checking in or out
Bike rentals should be better priced than local rental companies
It’s a comfortable place Location next to public transport
What could be improved: Nothing
Great visit! Great location! Walking distance to many restaurants, museums, market, etc.
What could be improved: Small rooms
Excellent stay!!! Everything was perfect!!!
