Hotel Larende sits on a quiet street in Oud-West, and honestly, I walked past it twice before realizing this was the place. It’s tucked into a classic Amsterdam townhouse row, which means no flashy signage or grand entrance — just a clean, understated front that blends right into the neighborhood. The lobby feels more like stepping into someone’s well-appointed home than a typical hotel, which I actually found refreshing after dealing with those sterile chain places.

De Clercqstraat is one of those streets that locals actually live on, you know? You’ll see people heading to work with their bikes, grabbing groceries, walking dogs — real Amsterdam life happening around you. The Vondelpark is literally a five-minute walk away, and I mean that’s where you want to be on any decent morning. Plus, the whole Oud-West area has this great mix of local cafés and shops that haven’t been completely overtaken by tourist traps yet.

The Room Experience

My room was compact but thoughtfully laid out — typical Amsterdam style where every square meter counts. The bed was surprisingly comfortable for a three-star place, and I appreciated the blackout curtains since summer nights here stay bright until nearly 10 PM. The bathroom was small but modern, with a decent shower that actually had good water pressure (trust me, that’s not always a given in these old buildings).

Practical Touches

What impressed me most were the little things that showed someone actually thought about what travelers need. The WiFi worked perfectly throughout the building, there were enough outlets by the bed for charging devices, and the staff genuinely seemed to know the area well. When I asked about getting to the Rijksmuseum, the front desk guy didn’t just point me toward the tram — he explained which car to get on to avoid crowds and suggested a nice route through the park.

You’re close enough to walk to the major museums and canal districts, but far enough from the chaos of the Red Light District to actually get some sleep.
