First Impressions
Walking up to Hotel Hermitage Amsterdam on Nieuwe Keizersgracht, you’ll notice it’s one of those classic canal-side buildings that actually feels authentically Dutch — not touristy at all. The entrance is understated, which I honestly prefer over those flashy hotel lobbies that scream “tourist trap.” It’s a three-star property, so don’t expect marble everything, but there’s something genuinely welcoming about the place that hits you right away.
Location That Actually Matters
Here’s what I love about this spot in Amsterdam — you’re literally in the city center, but on a quieter canal that doesn’t get the crazy foot traffic of the main tourist drags. I mean, you can walk to Dam Square in about ten minutes, but you’re not dealing with the constant noise and crowds right outside your window. The couples who stay here seem to get it — they’ve rated the location 8.7, and honestly, I can see why. You’ve got that perfect balance of being close to everything while still feeling like you’re experiencing the real Amsterdam, not just the postcard version.
The Room Experience
The room I stayed in was compact — and I mean properly compact, which is pretty standard for Amsterdam’s historic buildings. But here’s the thing: they’ve made smart use of the space, and the canal view (if you get one) makes up for any size limitations. The decor is clean and modern without trying too hard to be trendy. You know what surprised me? The soundproofing was actually decent, considering these old buildings usually let every footstep echo through the walls. The furnishings are comfortable and well-maintained throughout.
Getting Around and Practical Stuff
One thing that’s worth mentioning — parking in this part of Amsterdam is basically a nightmare, so if you’re driving, factor that in. But honestly, you don’t need a car here anyway. The tram stops are close enough that you can easily get to Museumplein or the Jordaan without much fuss. I found myself walking most places though, because that’s really the best way to soak up the canal district atmosphere. Public transportation connections are excellent and reliable.
Why Guests Love It
What keeps people coming back to Hotel Hermitage Amsterdam isn’t any single standout feature — it’s more about the whole package working well together. You’re getting a solid, no-nonsense place to stay in one of the best parts of the city without paying five-star prices. The staff seems to actually know the neighborhood and can point you toward the good local spots, not just the obvious tourist attractions. For couples especially, there’s something romantic about staying right on the canal, watching the boats drift by in the evening. It’s not going to blow your mind, but it’ll give you exactly what you need for a proper Amsterdam experience.

What Our Guests Say
Good Nice location, clean rooms and helpful staff.
Thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would stay there again if we return to Amsterdam. Very convenient location to a lot of places. Staff very helpful and accommodated us on a lower floor due to age related issues.
What could be improved: The stairs but understand that because of the structure of the building this was unavoidable.

What could be improved: Too noisy
Very good Location is perfect, few steps from Rembrandt Plein.
What could be improved: No lift
Thank you! A wonderful base in a terrific city. Central, clean, friendly staff, lovely old building with lots of character. Great bathroom facilities, even in such a small space. Bike hire was cheap and convenient.
What could be improved: The room was tiny, so I was hunched ip lots of the time, but I knew the room was going to be like this.
Very good Cleaned really well
Everything needed
What could be improved: It was very small and noisy out my window
Amazing experience Everythinggg! The large double room was very spacious and luckily we got the room facing the tunnel so it was very pretty scenery. Owner/receptionist were very friendly. It also nearby with the public transport and other main tourist attractions. Will repeat this hotel again if I went back here.
What could be improved: Unfortunately the stairs :(. The stairs were very narrow so if you got big/heavy luggage, that will be a troublesome. I would recommend to bring small luggage or just backpack.
