First Impressions
Walking up to Hotel Frank since 1666 on Herengracht feels like stepping into one of those Amsterdam postcards — you know, the ones with the impossibly narrow canal houses that make you wonder how anyone actually lives in them. This three-star gem sits right in the heart of Amsterdam‘s most famous canal ring, and honestly, the location alone makes it worth considering. The building itself has that classic Dutch charm you’d expect from a place that’s been around since, well, 1666 — though don’t worry, they’ve definitely updated things since then.
The Heart of Canal Ring Life
What really struck me about staying here is how you’re literally surrounded by Amsterdam’s best bits without feeling like you’re in some tourist trap. The Anne Frank House is basically around the corner (hence the name, I’m guessing), and you can walk to the Jordaan district in about five minutes. I mean, couples absolutely love this spot — they’ve rated the location 9.6 out of 10, which honestly doesn’t surprise me at all. You’re close enough to everything that matters, but the Herengracht is just quiet enough that you’re not dealing with the chaos of Damrak or Leidseplein right outside your window.
The Room Experience
The rooms here are what you’d expect from a historic canal house — cozy, let’s call it. My room had that typical Amsterdam narrow layout, but they’ve made smart use of the space. The windows overlooked the canal, which was pretty magical in the morning light, though you’ll want to keep in mind that these old buildings have their quirks. The floors creak a bit (it’s 350+ years old, so fair enough), and the stairs are steep and narrow in that distinctly Dutch way. The modern touches blend well with the historic character though — decent Wi-Fi, updated bathroom, and the heating actually works properly.
Practical Considerations
One thing to know upfront — parking in this part of Amsterdam is basically non-existent, but that’s actually perfect because you won’t need a car anyway. Everything’s walkable, and there’s a tram stop nearby if you want to venture further out. The staff here really knows their stuff about the neighborhood too, which comes in handy when you’re trying to figure out which brown café to hit up or where to find decent stroopwafels that aren’t tourist-priced. They’ve got that local knowledge that makes a difference when you’re only in town for a few days.
Why Guests Love It
Look, this isn’t going to be the fanciest place you’ve ever stayed, but there’s something genuinely special about waking up in a 17th-century building right on one of Amsterdam’s most beautiful canals. The 8.5 rating speaks for itself — people come here for the authentic Amsterdam experience, not for marble bathrooms or fancy amenities. You’re paying for location and character, and you definitely get both. If you want to feel like you’re actually living in Amsterdam rather than just visiting it, this place nails that vibe perfectly.

What Our Guests Say
Perfect! I have stayed here many times, it’s a lovely hotel in a perfect location
What could be improved: Nothing!
Exceptional Although it may seem as if Hotel Frank is out of the way, it's a very easy ride on the tram from Centraal Station.
The staff are always on hand to answer any questions. On our next return to Amsterdam we would happily return to Hotel Frank.
Exceptional The staff was extremely helpful and kind. As you may know, these old buildings in Amsterdam have very steep stairs. The staff was so kind as to take our luggage up for us and even brought it down when we were leaving. The atmosphere is very sexy and romantic and the location was perfect. So close to restaurants and coffee shops.
What could be improved: I really dont have anything negative to say other than the stair cases are like ladders, but it's to be expected. It's since 1666 you know.
Exceptional Super nice staff, central location and a cozy room.
They also let me check- in super late and check-out later free of charge. Highly recommend.
Great location and nice quirky place Quirky comfortable and quiet
Fantastic staff. Great location. Lovely stylish property. Excellent helpful staff. Well located.
What could be improved: Lack of natural light in one of the loft suites.
Hotel Frank is the best place to stay when exploring central Amsterdam Massimo was so friendly and helpful and made our stay a wonderful one. The location and comfort level was perfect. Great restaurants nearby and close to the tram. Thank you!
It was wonderful! We would stay here again. The location is in a good clean safe area.
What could be improved: We love the older European buildings, it is an inconvenience not having an elevator or AC. However, The desk person saw us as we arrived greeting us at the door, and told us he would handle our bags. We booked the room on the 3 floor. It looked out onto a courtyard and had a canal view. The desk person also carried them down on our departure day.
Superb Staff were wonderful and the hotel was really quiet in a lovely buzzing neighbourhood. Very clean and unique. A lovely old building with character.
Beautiful hotel, great location, amazing staff! Overall, it was an amazing property, in the heart of Amsterdam, honouring the classic Dutch style of old houses. The staff was amazing, very polite and super helpful! Would reccommend!
What could be improved: The position of my room in the building made it a little hard to reach, as I had to climb to the first floor and then take the stairs down to my room - it was a little hard due to the narrow staircase.
