First Impressions
When I first spotted Dreamtime Houseboat moored along Jacob Van Lennepkade, I’ll admit I did a double-take. This isn’t your typical three-star accommodation — it’s literally a floating hotel experience in one of Amsterdam‘s most authentic neighborhoods. The boat itself has this weathered charm that feels genuinely Dutch, not some tourist gimmick dressed up for Instagram.
The Floating Experience
Staying on the water changes everything, honestly. You wake up to the gentle rocking motion and the sound of canal boats puttering by outside your window. The room I stayed in was compact but cleverly designed — every inch serves a purpose, much like you’d expect on a proper houseboat. There’s something oddly soothing about falling asleep to the soft lapping of water against the hull.
Oud-West Neighborhood
Here’s what I love about this location — you’re in Oud-West, which means you’re living like an actual Amsterdammer rather than camping out in the tourist bubble. The nearby Vondelpark is perfect for morning runs, and you’ve got authentic brown cafés within walking distance where locals actually drink. Plus, the tram connections are solid if you want to venture into the city center.
Practical Comforts
Don’t expect hotel room service or a fancy lobby — this is more like borrowing a friend’s really cool houseboat. The kitchen setup is basic but functional, which actually worked out great since I could grab fresh ingredients from the local markets. There’s no on-site restaurant, but honestly, that forced me to explore the neighborhood’s food scene, which turned out to be a blessing.
Why Guests Love It
Look, this place isn’t for everyone — if you need parking or prefer traditional hotels, you might want to look elsewhere. But if you want something genuinely different and don’t mind a bit of adventure with your accommodation, Dreamtime Houseboat delivers an experience you simply can’t get anywhere else. The 9.0 rating makes sense when you consider what you’re actually getting: a unique Amsterdam story to tell, not just a place to sleep.
Best hotels in Amsterdam blend canal-view balconies, design interiors, and farm-to-table breakfast spreads.

What Our Guests Say
Exceptional Super unique place, spacious, well furnished. Friendly and helpful hosts. Our kids loved feeding the ducks in the canal in the morning!
Budget-friendly houseboat Quiet location, close to some attractions, but still walkable to farther ones. The children loved the experience of being in a houseboat. The WiFi was fast. Shower was great and bed very comfortable. The bathroom is outside the room - in the front hallway. The front door is very low - if you’re tall, mind your head every time you go through (there’s even a sign). The hosts are great in providing what you need.
What could be improved: No outlet in bathroom to plug hairdryer.
Unique stay in Amsterdam.Book this! Perfect space for a family of four. Quiet area but yet still an easy 20-30 minute walk to all attractions. Amazing spot. We loved it.
What could be improved: Nothing!
Unique stay in a lovely residential part of Amsterdam, central areas easily accessible by tram. In a quiet location with easy access to the rest of Amsterdam via tram or walking. Lovely to witness day to day life on the canal with boats going past, kids swimming, bird life enjoying the water.
The host was easy to deal with. An initial issue encountered during our stay was rectified quickly.
What could be improved: The gate to the houseboat is not too obvious from the street. The house number is past the gate and fence so not actually visible until you have already accessed the property.
The path to the locked gate is obscured by weeds, there wasn't adequate lighting and this posed an issue for us when we arrived late at night. A neighbour across the road tried to help but he couldn't find the entry either. We finaly found it after some searching. This is an issue that can be easily rectified, it seems a lot of other guests have also pointed this out already.
This place was a bit of a splurge for our family but was totally worth it! It was a fun, unique experience for our family. The coffee and coffee maker was wonderful. The toaster and mini fridge allowed us to make simple meals at home. The kids (and adults) loved feeding the swans from the window. We had minor bumps in the road during our trip to Amsterdam and Melle was super helpful and it was wonderful meeting and chatting with him. My husband loved walking to 5 ways coffee, we saw a movie at lab 111 and got some drinks (just across the canal) and walked all OVER the city. Great holiday!
What could be improved: None
Unique, comfortable and well located Great space, it was nicer and larger than we expected. It was great to chill and watch the canal boats go by or to sit outside on the deck. The curtains section the space well. Convenient location near the centre and vondelpark, and there’s a pretty suburb just over the nearest bridge.
What could be improved: It’s completely clean, but some of the furnishings mean the air can be a tiny bit dusty if that’s a concern for you, but we just opened the skylight window a touch and it was fine. It is a very minor ‘con’, on the whole everything was perfect.
Exceptional Great find as for the price it was very large, quiet location, and you're on a houseboat! I loved watching boats or paddle boarders go by and the patio was nice to enjoy the warm sunshine.
Not far from public transportation which made getting around easy.
Smooth sailing (whilst permanently moored). First of all, the host is excellent. Communication was smooth & polite. We appreciated him considerably.
The part of the houseboat dedicated to guests is a generous size & the curtains that can be drawn across for some privacy worked well. Nice to look out onto the canal & open the windows for some fresh air.
I wouldn't advise staying here if you plan to make a lot of noise. It's a quiet part of the neighbourhood & the host (owner, I think) of the boat lives next door. Always best to be a bit mindful & respectful.
What could be improved: Not sure how well insulated (noise) the accommodation section is from the rest of the boat. We (3 single, responsible people that don't party too hard) didn't have any issues though. :-)
Maybe bring a small torch or use your phone light (at night) to access entry via gate & navigate to the front door.
Relaxing, enjoyable and value for money Easy to find, quiet area. Only 20minutes from main areas.
My kids face's were priceless when they realize we were staying on a proper Amsterdam houseboat! Location, windows, interior design and flexible layout.
What could be improved: Some of the crockery was past its best.
