First Impressions
Walking up to Dikker & Thijs Hotel on Prinsengracht, you immediately notice it’s tucked into one of those classic Amsterdam canal house buildings that somehow manages to feel both grand and intimate. The entrance has this understated elegance — no flashy signage or over-the-top lobby, just that confident four-star vibe that says they know exactly what they’re doing. I mean, when a place has been around since the 1800s, they’ve had plenty of time to get the details right.
Location & Neighborhood
The location is honestly what sold me on this place. You’re right in the heart of Amsterdam City Centre on one of the most beautiful canals, but it’s not touristy in that overwhelming way. The Jordaan district is literally across the canal — perfect for those morning coffee walks when you want to feel like a local. Anne Frank House is about a five-minute stroll, and you can walk to the main shopping streets without dealing with tram schedules, though there’s a parking garage nearby if you’re driving (which, let’s be honest, you probably shouldn’t in Amsterdam).
The Room Experience
The room I stayed in had that perfect balance of historic charm and modern comfort. High ceilings, original wooden beams, and windows that actually open onto the canal — you know, the kind of view that makes you want to just sit there with your morning coffee and watch the boats go by. The bathroom was compact but well-designed, and honestly, the bed was surprisingly comfortable for what I expected from a canal house conversion.
Dining & Amenities
The hotel restaurant downstairs serves solid Dutch cuisine with a modern twist, though I found myself eating out most nights because, well, you’re in Amsterdam. What I really appreciated was the bar area — it’s got this cozy, neighborhood pub feel where you can actually have a conversation without shouting. The staff here really knows their local recommendations too, which saved me from a lot of tourist trap mistakes.
Why Guests Love It
Look, Dikker & Thijs isn’t trying to be the fanciest place in town, and that’s exactly why it works. You get that authentic Amsterdam canal house experience without sacrificing comfort or service. The building has character — creaky floors, narrow staircases, all that historic charm — but they’ve modernized where it counts. Plus, you’re staying in a spot where locals actually live and work, not just another hotel district where everything closes at 6 PM.

What Our Guests Say
So good, we wished we had stayed longer. Great location, on a canal, close by historic sights, great cafes, restaurants and the nightlife that Amsterdam is known for.
I’d stay here again any time. Lots of things. The location. The staff was always pleasant and helpful. The room was large and the bed comfortable. But…the breakfast was amazing. The baked goods were good. The fruit salad was fresh. Quite a selection of cheeses and meats and freshly cooked eggs of your choice. The dining room staff was always pleasant. They have a coffee station that can be accessed 24 hours a day with any kind of coffee that you like (and tea) The proximity to many different restaurant options made grabbing dinner very easy.
What could be improved: No complaints.
A perfect place for our Amsterdam stay, would definitely stay again & request a canal view room 😉 The room was much more spacious than many Amsterdam hotels. It was tastefully furnished & decorated & more than comfortable. The location was amazing, could not have asked for better.
What could be improved: It was no problem but we’d have preferred a view other than the rubbish bins The doors that must be navigated outside the lift to reach the rooms (201) on the 2nd floor are rather awkward when carrying luggage… a small thing, easily overcome. The staff were lovely but not overly knowledgeable about recommending restaurants etc.
I would stay here again. The hotel was in a great location. We could walk 20 minutes in multiple directions and explore different sections of the city.
We stayed in the Penthouse suite and it was awesome to sit and look out over the city. The staff were helpful and friendly. We were able to check in early after a long night jet train ride.
The breakfast onsite was delicious. I also enjoyed the lounge area with complementary coffee and tea.
What could be improved: Nothing
Exceptional The location was absolutely perfect since it is in the center of Amsterdam walking distance to everything (museums, shopping, tourist attractions, restaurants) and with great connectivity to the whole city via tram just outside the door of the hotel.
The staff were increasingly helpful and kind.
The room we stayed in was very clean and super spacious, with complementary coffee and tea and chocolates. The shower was very good.
Breakfast was excellent.
What could be improved: Nothing I did not like.
Had an unplanned night in Amsterdam after a delayed flight, decided to go to this hotel: it ended up being a great stay Great location, beautiful style, elegant and interesting.
What could be improved: Nothing comes to mind.
Great stay by the canal Kind and very helpful stuff, spacious room, nice breakfast (great coffee) and very good location.
The hotel is outstanding, and we had a wonderful experience there. The hotel provides an elegant place to stay in a prime location near, inter alia, the Rijksmuseum, the Van Gogh Museum, the Anne Frank Huis etc. it was also located at a stop for three trams and a short walk from a number of restaurants. The staff at the hotel was professional, friendly and attentive. The breakfast was excellent. There were little extras like continuously available coffee, tea and small snacks. The room was spacious with a pleasant view even though we did not opt for a direct view over the canal.
What could be improved: We have no negative comments.
Amazing stay and close to everything around made it convenient We love the location and how everything was walkable. We enjoyed our stay here with friendly staff. Lots of variety of restaurants and shops closeby makes it even easier to grab. You can hear a bit of noise but that didn’t really bother us.
What could be improved: It was amazing stay.
3 day visit to Amsterdam Great location. Close to all the main sites & museums. The staff was friendly. Breakfast delicious.
What could be improved: Small room. Not enough light.
