The Experience

City Hotel Amsterdam

First Impressions Walking up to City Hotel Amsterdam on Prins Hendrikkade, you'll notice it sits right in the thick of things — and I mean that in the best way possible.

First Impressions

Walking up to City Hotel Amsterdam on Prins Hendrikkade, you’ll notice it sits right in the thick of things — and I mean that in the best way possible. The building has that classic Amsterdam charm without trying too hard, and honestly, the location hits you before you even step inside. You’re basically on the doorstep of Central Station, which sounds chaotic but actually works perfectly for getting around.

Location & Neighborhood

This three-star spot puts you smack in the middle of Amsterdam City Centre, and I can’t stress enough how much of a game-changer that is. The Red Light District is literally a three-minute walk — whether that’s a pro or con depends on what you’re after, but it’s definitely not boring. What I really love though is how close you are to the canals and all those postcard-perfect streets, plus the Nieuwmarkt area where locals actually hang out.

The Room Experience

The rooms are what you’d expect from a solid three-star — clean, functional, and surprisingly quiet considering you’re in the heart of everything. My room was compact (this is Amsterdam, after all), but they’ve made smart use of the space. The beds are comfortable enough, and you get decent Wi-Fi, which honestly matters more than fancy amenities when you’re out exploring all day.

Amenities & Practical Stuff

There’s a restaurant on-site that serves decent food, though with Amsterdam’s incredible dining scene right outside your door, I’d say use it mainly for breakfast or when you’re too tired to venture out. The staff actually knows the neighborhood well — they gave me some solid recommendations that weren’t just the usual tourist traps. Parking isn’t available at the hotel, but honestly, you don’t want a car in this part of the city anyway.

Why Guests Love It

Here’s the thing — City Hotel Amsterdam isn’t trying to be something it’s not, and that’s exactly why it works. You’re paying for the location and getting a clean, comfortable place to crash between adventures. I’ve stayed in fancier places in Amsterdam that felt sterile, but this one has personality. The value is solid for what you get, especially when you factor in that you can walk to most major attractions and save a fortune on transportation.

Good location but staff not friendly Hotel is 10 minute walk from Central Station. Area is across from canal and is quiet. Bed really comfortable, shower was quite powerful, was able to grab extra towels from the trolley on the first floor, hotel was clean.

What could be improved: Other than the man who checked us in the staff were not very friendly. Woman on reception one night was very rude when our key fob wouldn't work to get in the room and we had to go down 3 times to reception to get it activated. Customer service poor. Hotel in narrow building. Lift just goes part way and then there are more stairs to our room. We noticed several ridges on the floors that could easily be tripped over. Breakfast was ok, choices not great but filled a gap. Just a normal household toaster that didn't work on our last morning.

Great location, helpful staff, excellent breakfast, positive experience. The location walking distance to the central train station was perfect for our needs. The staff was very very helpful. They stored our luggage early the day of checkin. The front desk staff helped us with several directions to get to starting points of tours we had booked independently. They were extremely helpful arranging early breakfast that allowed us to get out the door bright and early to start our visit in Amsterdam. The recommendation of the little nearby restaurant Captein &Co was perfect for us. It was a hidden gem walking distance away after a long day of travel. We went there twice. We made a good choice for the hotel.

What could be improved: Our room was a basement choice which we made as it cost a little less. Keep in mind that the small flight of stairs is steep. They were good to store our large suitcase upstairs in the locked closet. It would have been hard for us to get it down the stairs without a struggle.

Family break in Amsterdam Great location, great breakfast. Friendly and helpful staff.

What could be improved: Rooms was a bit strange as it had a kitchen with no equipment in it. They had had to move us from our original room, so we weren't expecting a kitchen but given there was one it would have been good for a few plates.and glasses to be included.
