First Impressions
Honestly, when I first spotted the Waterloo square river vieuw houseboat moored along the Amstel, I wasn’t sure what to expect. I mean, you hear “houseboat hotel” and your mind goes in all sorts of directions. But this four-star floating gem in Amsterdam actually delivers something pretty special — it’s like staying in someone’s thoughtfully designed river home rather than a quirky tourist gimmick.
The Floating Experience
What really got me was how the gentle movement of the water becomes part of your stay. You’re not getting seasick or anything dramatic, just this subtle reminder that you’re literally living on the Amstel River. The views through the windows change with the light throughout the day, and there’s something oddly soothing about watching other boats drift by while you’re having your morning coffee. The houseboat feels surprisingly spacious inside — I’d worried it might be cramped, but the layout actually makes clever use of every corner.
Location Perks
Being moored right in Amsterdam City Centre means you can walk to pretty much everything that matters. The Waterlooplein flea market is practically next door (hence the name, I guess), and you’re maybe ten minutes from the Red Light District if that’s your thing. What I really appreciated was having the river right there when the city center got overwhelming — you know how Amsterdam can feel packed with tourists sometimes. Just stepping back onto your floating room felt like having a peaceful escape route.
The Practical Side
The houseboat comes with a compact but functional kitchen area, which honestly saved me quite a bit on dining out. Amsterdam isn’t exactly cheap for meals, so being able to grab groceries and cook something simple was great. There’s no fancy restaurant on board (obviously — it’s a houseboat), but the nearby streets have plenty of dining options when you want to venture out. Parking isn’t really an issue since, well, you’re on the water, but if you’re driving into Amsterdam, you’ll need to sort that out separately in the city.
Why Guests Love It
Look, this isn’t going to be everyone’s cup of tea, but if you want something genuinely different from your typical Amsterdam hotel experience, this place delivers. The 8.7 rating makes sense when you consider what you’re getting — it’s not trying to be a floating palace, just a well-thought-out alternative that lets you experience the city from the water. The novelty factor is real, but it doesn’t sacrifice comfort for quirkiness. You’ll definitely have stories to tell when you get home, and honestly, isn’t that sort of the point of traveling?

What Our Guests Say
Cool place to stay I would stay there again! Awesome location, near Metro station, awesome views at night, and a really cool place to stay
What could be improved: Towels could use some updating, getting on the boat and getting luggage into boat was quite difficult if you have mobility problems.
Amazing location and fun experience, worth it! The location is worth every penny! It was so fun to be on the water and it is easy to get anywhere in the city from the boat!
What could be improved: The beds are small and not the most comfortable, but it’s worth it for the experience!
Exceptional Great stay in an amazing having location. Very good information, directions and recommendations
Superb Excellent location, good value for money, great communication with owner, exciting experience
What could be improved: Really tiny :)
Perhaps the very best place to stay in Amsterdam This place has a view that is absolutely astounding. Central location, with easy access to anything you could desire. Beds and bedding were nice. The view alone is worth the price. Great, clear instructions on how to get in. The metro is steps away.
What could be improved: No real comfortable seating in the boat. But you’ll be exploring most of the time that you are awake anyway. Beds are great.
Amazing Judith sent us all the details the day before the stay. We really loved the location, it was absolutely perfect and sitting upstairs in the boat in the evening was amazing, watching the boats and people go by. It was warm, cozy, clean and we could not have asked for a better stay.
What could be improved: We loved everything
Brilliant experience and location - plus great value for money Location was excellent. Communication with host was 1st class. The experince was great too. It was very easy to find and get in etc
What could be improved: The ladders down into the actual living area was awkward and definitely not for less able bodied people. When looking at the boat I thought we had the whole boat, but it's been converted I think into 2 properties in half. Never the less , clean, comfy and brilliant experience
Great location and views - a perfect base to explore the city. Very unique place to stay. I loved being on the river and watching everyone pass by. It felt that I was one of the locals!
Amazing Location was perfect so close to restaurants, activities and shops
What could be improved: Little to dislike, I slept in the front of the boat, I recommend an eye mask as daylight woke me a little earlier than I like.
