First Impressions
Walking up to Waldorf Astoria Amsterdam along the Herengracht feels like stepping into a movie scene — you know, one of those moments where the protagonist discovers something extraordinary hidden in plain sight. The hotel occupies six 17th-century canal houses that have been seamlessly connected, and honestly, the facade alone made me pause to take it all in. This five-star property doesn’t announce itself with flashy signage; instead, it whispers luxury through those classic Amsterdam gables and perfectly restored brickwork.
Location & Neighborhood
The location on Herengracht is pretty much unbeatable if you want to experience real Amsterdam rather than just tourist Amsterdam. You’re right in the heart of the Canal Ring — a UNESCO World Heritage site — but it’s the quieter, more elegant part where locals actually live and work. I could walk to the Rijksmuseum in about ten minutes, and the Anne Frank House is practically around the corner. What I really loved though was having those little neighborhood cafés and cheese shops right at my doorstep, places where the barista remembers your order after two visits.
The Room Experience
My room was this perfect blend of historic charm and modern luxury — think original wooden beams paired with marble bathrooms and technology that actually works intuitively. The windows looked out over the canal, and I spent way too much time just watching the boats glide by and people cycling along the waterside paths. The beds are seriously comfortable, and the linens have that crisp hotel quality that makes you want to crawl under the covers even at 3 PM. Each room feels different because they’ve worked with the original architecture rather than fighting against it.
Dining & Amenities
The restaurant here — Librije’s Zusje — is run by the same team behind the Michelin three-star De Librije, which explains why dinner felt like such an event. I mean, the food was incredible, but it’s the kind of place where you want to dress up a bit and take your time. The Peacock Alley bar became my evening ritual; they make cocktails that are complex without being pretentious, and the space has this old-world elegance that feels authentic rather than themed. The spa is small but beautifully designed, tucked away in what feels like a secret basement sanctuary.
Why Guests Love It
What sets this place apart is how it manages to feel both grand and intimate at the same time. The service strikes that perfect balance — attentive without being hovering, professional but genuinely warm. You get the prestige of the Waldorf Astoria name, but it doesn’t feel corporate or cookie-cutter. It’s the kind of hotel where you actually want to spend time in the common areas, where coming “home” at the end of the day feels like a luxury in itself. If you’re looking for an Amsterdam experience that goes beyond the typical canal-side hotel, this is it — though you’ll definitely pay for the privilege.
The concierge service in Amsterdam arranges private canal cruises, exclusive art gallery viewings, and curated cycling tours through historic neighborhoods.

Everything was perfect Perfect
perfect very nice hotel, historical building with very friendly service, a wonderful garden to sit in and relax, read, work. Beautiful breakfast room.
What could be improved: no bar and only limited occasion for a „“later drink“
The staff were so attentive & helpful. Could not fault the place It was just perfect!! 😍
Exceptional Rooms, service decor, location , gardens.
simply stunning
Superb Perfect location. Very stylish interior. Fantasting staff - elegant and attentive. Breakfast on very high level with outstanding quality of ingredients.
What could be improved: I had only one experience with Peacock Alley restaurant and it was below expectations - the chef may have had a bad day - my wagyu steak instead of bleu/rare came medium/ well-done. The icecream/ chocolate dessert came with icecream completely melted - maybe it was supposed to be this way but not a dessert that you are looking forward to. It was all well compensated with 2 glasses of champagne which I appreciated but eventually it was not encouraging to try the restaurant again.
Outstanding Excellent location, service and attention to details.
What could be improved: Nothing. Everything is outstanding.
Wouldn’t want to stay anywhere else next time we visit Amsterdam Great location, very inviting public and private spaces and a wonderful warm reception from all the staff
What could be improved: Nothing
