First Impressions

Walking up to Tulip of Amsterdam on Kloveniersburgwal, you’ll notice how this four-star hotel manages to blend right into one of Amsterdam‘s most historic canal streets while still standing out with its welcoming entrance. The building itself has that classic Dutch charm — narrow, tall, and leaning slightly like so many of the centuries-old structures in this part of the city center. I mean, you’re literally staying on one of the oldest canals in Amsterdam, which honestly feels pretty special.

Location & Neighborhood

The location is actually fantastic if you want to be in the thick of things without dealing with the tourist chaos of Dam Square every time you step outside. You’re a two-minute walk from the Red Light District (whether that’s a plus or minus depends on your perspective), and the Nieuwmarkt square is right around the corner with its weekend markets and cozy cafés. What I really appreciate is how easy it is to walk to the major museums from here — the Rijksmuseum and Van Gogh Museum are about 15 minutes on foot through the canal district.

The Room Experience

The room I stayed in was compact but thoughtfully designed, which is pretty much what you’d expect in Amsterdam’s city center. The tall windows let in great natural light during the day, and you know what? The beds are actually comfortable — not always a given in European hotels. The bathroom was modern and clean, though definitely on the smaller side. There’s good WiFi throughout, and the heating worked well during my winter visit.

Dining & Amenities

The hotel doesn’t have its own restaurant, but honestly, that’s not really an issue when you’re surrounded by some of Amsterdam’s best eating spots. There’s a lovely breakfast setup in the morning with fresh bread, local cheeses, and decent coffee — nothing fancy, but it gets the job done. The staff pointed me toward Café de Reiger for dinner, which turned out to be an excellent recommendation for traditional Dutch food.

Why Guests Love It

What really makes this place work is the combination of that 9.3 rating and the genuine helpfulness of the staff — they seem to actually know the neighborhood and give solid recommendations. The hotel feels authentic to Amsterdam rather than like some generic international chain. Plus, there’s something nice about falling asleep to the gentle sounds of the canal at night. It’s not the fanciest place you’ll ever stay, but it captures the essence of what makes Amsterdam special, and sometimes that matters more than having every possible amenity.
