When I first pulled up to Tjotter, I honestly wasn’t sure what to expect from this four-star spot tucked away in Zuideramstel. The name itself is pretty unique — it’s actually a Dutch word for a traditional sailing boat, which gives you a hint about the maritime character they’re going for. What immediately caught my attention was how easy it was to find parking right on site, which anyone who’s driven around Amsterdam will tell you is basically a small miracle.

The Zuideramstel Advantage

Here’s what I love about this location — you’re technically in Amsterdam, but you’re away from the tourist chaos of the city center. Zuideramstel feels more like a proper neighborhood where actual people live, you know? You’ve got the Amstel River right there, and it’s genuinely peaceful in a way that the canal ring just isn’t anymore. The couples who stay here seem to really get it — there’s something romantic about being near the water without having to dodge bachelor parties every five minutes.

The Room Experience

My room had this clean, modern Dutch design that felt thoughtful rather than trying too hard. The windows were larger than I expected, and you actually get decent natural light, which matters more than you’d think during those gray Amsterdam months. What struck me was the attention to small details — proper blackout curtains, USB ports where you actually need them, and a bathroom that doesn’t feel like an afterthought. It’s not flashy, but everything just works the way it should.

Getting Around

The thing about staying in Zuideramstel is that you’re connected to everything without being overwhelmed by it. There’s a metro station nearby that’ll get you to Central Station in about fifteen minutes, but honestly, I found myself walking along the Amstel more often than not. If you’re planning to explore beyond the typical tourist spots — maybe check out some of the newer neighborhoods or actually see how locals live — this area gives you that flexibility. Plus, having your own car here actually makes sense, unlike in the city center where it’s just a liability.

Why Guests Love It

After spending time here, I get why the location scores so well with couples especially. There’s something about being able to step outside and take an evening walk along the river, or grab dinner at one of the local spots without feeling like you’re performing tourism. The restaurant scene in this part of Amsterdam is more about neighborhood gems than tourist traps, which means better food and actual conversation over dinner. You’re close enough to hit the museums and canals when you want that classic Amsterdam experience, but you come back to somewhere that feels more real, more livable.
