First Impressions
The Market Retreat sits right in the heart of Albert Cuyp Market, and honestly, that’s both its charm and its quirk. You’ll hear the market vendors setting up early morning — but if you’re the type who loves being dropped into authentic local life, this is pretty perfect. The building itself is classic Amsterdam narrow-house style, and stepping inside feels like discovering a well-kept secret.
Location & Neighborhood
Being on Albert Cuypstraat means you’re literally living above one of Amsterdam‘s most famous markets. I mean, you can grab fresh stroopwafels and cheese for breakfast just by walking downstairs. The Heineken Experience is a five-minute walk if that’s your thing, and the Museum Quarter — with Van Gogh and Rijksmuseum — is close enough that you’ll actually walk there instead of taking trams. De Pijp neighborhood has this great mix of locals and travelers without feeling touristy.
The Room Experience
The room I stayed in was compact but cleverly designed — very Dutch efficiency. You get a proper bed, not some fold-out situation, and the bathroom actually has decent water pressure (trust me, this matters). The windows face the market street, so there’s always something to watch, though you might want earplugs if you’re a light sleeper. What surprised me was how quiet it gets once the market closes around 5 PM.
Practical Details
This three-star place doesn’t pretend to be fancy, but everything works well. The staff knows the neighborhood inside out — they’ll tell you which market stalls have the best prices and where locals actually eat. There’s no on-site restaurant, but honestly, with the market downstairs and De Pijp’s café scene, you won’t miss it. Free Wi-Fi is solid, and they’ll hold your luggage if you arrive early.
Why Guests Love It
The 9.2 rating makes sense when you realize what you’re getting — authentic Amsterdam living without the premium price tag. You’re not just staying near the action; you’re part of it. Morning coffee with market sounds, evening walks through tree-lined streets, and the kind of local recommendations you can’t Google. It’s the sort of place where you’ll end up staying longer than planned, not because it’s perfect, but because it feels real.
Apartments in Amsterdam suit families with canal-facing windows, full kitchens, and sunset bike rides through De Pijp.

What Our Guests Say
Exceptional We loved our stay!
Studio is spacious and has everything you need, including a coffee machine and mini fridge
Location is absolutely perfect - tram and trains right at your doorstep
The market is fabulous and we never heard boo from them!
Great location, facilities and David is super friendly
Yes, there are traditional Dutch stairs to get to the studio, but we loved that! Really felt like you were experiencing Amsterdam for all it's beautiful glory
Comfortable place in a good location to enjoy a visit to Amsterdam. It was a great location. The bed was very comfortable. Very clean. A large space. We loved the table and chairs to set our stuff up. The open window was nice to cool off. Market convenient - also laundromat just across the way. Also tram stop right across street.
What could be improved: It was a challenging flight of STEEP stairs to climb (length of 3 US fights). Narrow and dark. Too much “stuff”. That wooden chair needs a new home. Definitely need to get a luggage rack. Better lighting by the beds for reading.
Awesome overall The bed is so comfortable, the place is neat and well done, and David is an awesome guy.
Great location for the first visit Very convenient location, 10 minutes by tram from the central station and walkable distance to the convention center. It's also close to any other attractions you want to visit if that's your first visit to Amsterdam. The bed was very comfortable and the bathroom was clean..
What could be improved: There's a fridge, but no microwave if you need to warm something up. No curtains in the shower.
Very good Amazing location, lovely apartment. David was very hospitable. Perfect place for a long weekend in Amsterdam!
What could be improved: My friend and I had no issue with the stairs but the description of the property could have maybe stated how steep they were (pictures may help). Would not be ideal if you had any mobility problems
Exceptional Great place. Host David was very nice. Would stay here again.
Would love to come back! Really enjoyed staying at this place! Great location, beautiful room, very responsive host. Sun on the balcony in the afternoon! And a great bathtub 😄
Exceptional David was a great host
Enjoyable reprieve after Amsterdam adventuring Great location, much bigger space for the value compared to other European places I looked at. The tub was also lovely. Yes, the stairs are steep but if you’re active (and I hope you are going to such a walkable city!) you’ll be fine. However, if you’re drinking or partaking in other Amsterdam offerings… be mindful.
David was also an excellent host, it’s always nice to have a friendly face welcoming you upon arrival to a new city!
What could be improved: As a few others mentioned, the art was a bit more of a hinderance than enjoyable for the space. It would have been nice to have a luggage rack, closet with hangers, or a cozy chair. Also, the bed is normal for a European king with two twins pushed together, but they do concave inward a bit. After a few days our backs were feeling that.
Great value, great location! Cosy and modern furnishings, the bed was so comfortable and being able to stream from phone onto the TV is always a plus!
Very warm welcome from the Host, would definitely return!
