The Dylan Amsterdam – The Leading Hotels of the World

First Impressions

Walking up to The Dylan Amsterdam – The Leading Hotels of the World along Keizersgracht, you’d honestly never guess what awaits inside. The entrance is so understated it’s almost secretive — which, I’ve come to realize, is exactly the point. This five-star boutique property occupies a beautifully restored 17th-century building, and stepping through those doors feels like discovering Amsterdam’s best-kept secret.

The Design Story

What strikes you immediately is how they’ve managed to blend theatrical luxury with genuine Dutch elegance. Each floor has been designed by a different renowned designer, so wandering the halls is like moving through distinct artistic worlds. The ground floor feels almost mystical with its deep colors and dramatic lighting, while upper floors shift into lighter, more contemporary spaces. You know what though — it never feels gimmicky or over-the-top, just thoughtfully curated.

The Room Experience

My room was honestly stunning, with those impossibly high ceilings and windows that frame the canal perfectly. The marble bathroom felt indulgent without being flashy, and I mean, the bed was one of those you actually don’t want to leave. What I really appreciated were the little touches — the custom-designed furniture, the way natural light filters through during different times of day, the fact that you can hear the gentle lapping of canal water if you listen closely.

Location and Neighborhood Feel

Being right on Keizersgracht puts you in the heart of the Canal Ring, but it’s the quieter, more residential part that locals actually prefer. You’re a five-minute walk from the Nine Streets shopping area, and the Jordaan neighborhood is right there when you want that authentic Amsterdam cafe culture. The thing is, this stretch of canal doesn’t get the tour groups that swarm other areas — it feels like you’re staying in someone’s very elegant neighborhood rather than a tourist zone.

Why Guests Love It

The service here operates on that perfect level where staff anticipate what you need without being intrusive. Their restaurant Keizersgracht serves this modern European cuisine that’s actually memorable — not just hotel food. And honestly, having drinks in their intimate bar feels like being in someone’s sophisticated living room rather than a typical hotel lobby. The whole experience feels authentically Amsterdam while still delivering that luxury comfort you want after a day of walking cobblestones and climbing narrow staircases to visit museums.

The concierge service in Amsterdam arranges private canal cruises, exclusive art gallery viewings, and curated cycling tours through historic neighborhoods.

The Dylan is a lovely, historical hotel, well situated on a beautiful canal in the heart of Central Amsterdam. The location is perfect. The staff is professional, pleasant, accommodating. We particularly appreciated the advice and assistance of Ronald, the concierge.

What could be improved: We stayed 3 nights, and then another night a week or so later. Our first room was perhaps not spacious, but was very comfortable in terms of allowing us room for suitcases and just moving around without bumping into each other. For our second stay, we requested a walk-in shower. The tub shower combo in room one was awkward to get in and out of. We did, indeed, have a walk-in shower and it was beautiful. However, the room was very small, with inadequate space for both suitcases. Having said that, we would stay at The Dylan again, because the ambience and staff are wonderful.

Relaxing, pampered stay in a perfect location Location could not have been better for activities we had planned - museums and sightseeing. Concierge Ronald is a rock star, scoring tickets and arranging a fun canal tour. The restaurants he recommended were enjoyable and not ultra-expensive.

What could be improved: We asked for a room with a walk-in shower for our next stay. The tub shower combo was a little awkward, but doable.

The Dylan is a truly special hotel, where every moment feels exceptional Our stay at The Dylan was truly exceptional. Every detail, from the beautifully designed rooms to the overall experience, has been thoughtfully curated and executed to perfection. What made our visit even more special was the outstanding service from the entire team.

A huge thank you to Carol Domacasse in Reservations for making this trip so memorable, the Front of House team for their warm welcomes and thoughtful assistance, and the Concierge team for their impeccable service and kindness.

And, of course, the hotel itself is simply stunning—photos don’t do it justice! We can’t wait to return.
