First Impressions
Walking up to The College Hotel Amsterdam, Autograph Collection honestly feels like stumbling onto a movie set. This five-star property sits in a stunning 1890s school building — and I mean actually stunning, with all the original architectural details intact. The moment you step inside, you’re hit with this perfect blend of old-world elegance and modern luxury that somehow doesn’t feel forced or overdone.
Location & Neighborhood
You know what’s brilliant about this spot? It’s tucked away in Oud Zuid, which is easily Amsterdam’s most sophisticated neighborhood, but you’re still just a quick tram ride from all the tourist hotspots. The Rijksmuseum and Van Gogh Museum are literally around the corner — I could walk there in five minutes. But here’s the thing most visitors miss: this area is where actual Amsterdammers live and hang out, so you get that authentic local vibe without sacrificing luxury.
The Room Experience
My room was honestly impressive — high ceilings that reminded you of the building’s academic past, but with all the modern touches you’d expect from a luxury hotel. The bathrooms are particularly well done, with marble finishes and rainfall showers that actually have decent water pressure (trust me, this matters after a long day of walking Amsterdam’s cobblestones). The beds are ridiculously comfortable, though I did notice some rooms can be a bit snug — it’s a historic building after all, so don’t expect massive American-style suites.
Dining & Amenities
The restaurant deserves its own mention — it’s called TRADE and serves this fantastic modern European cuisine that’s actually worth eating at (not always a given with hotel restaurants, let’s be honest). What really impressed me was their approach to service; the staff clearly knows their stuff and can give you solid recommendations for both the hotel and the surrounding area. There’s also a cozy bar area where you’ll often find a mix of hotel guests and locals, which says something about the quality.
Why Guests Love It
This place gets so many things right that other luxury hotels in Amsterdam miss. The building itself tells a story — you’re literally sleeping in classrooms that have been transformed into elegant accommodations. The location gives you the best of both worlds: museum district accessibility with residential neighborhood charm. Plus, there’s something refreshing about a hotel that embraces its academic heritage without being gimmicky about it. If you want luxury in Amsterdam but prefer staying somewhere with actual character rather than another generic five-star property, this is your spot.

What Our Guests Say
Perfect location and service Location is perfect for business purpose. Never crowded feeling, breakfast fast and delicious. Rooms are quiet for a good night sleep
Exceptional Well managed and spacious and clean rooms and very good staff service + external gym arrangement
What could be improved: Nothing
Pleasant setting, great location, staff friendly but for 5 star hotel there were a few deficiencies Lovely old building with beautiful spaces and good renovation but room space not optimised and no wine glasses in room
What could be improved: Waited an extraordinarily long time to be served for breakfast and on second day when brought wrong order and waited >35 min to get served we left as we had commitments elsewhere...
Great concept, location and staff - can’t wait to be back! Had an amazing stay at The College Hotel for a quick city break. I loved how the concept of the hotel, being an old boys‘ school, stayed so true to its history with the decor in such an elegant yet cheeky way. We were made so welcome by Vasia and Peter, who started our stay off on such a high note right from the moment we walked through the door, great hospitality.
Very nice hotel in a convenient location in Amsterdam Excellent room, friendly efficient staff, and very good location.
What could be improved: Aircon was a bit cold.
Exceptional A very rigorous Marriott hotel, small but boutique, the service staff are well trained and the rooms are very clean.
What could be improved: Breakfast is not a buffet.
Great place to stay Location, building and comfort
We will recommend the college hotel to any of our friends and family who are planning a trip to Ams. Breakfast was great and the location was exactly where we wanted to be, namely close to the Van Gogh museum and the tram lines. Your staff are excellent and went out of their way to make us feel at home. We were contacted by your staff regarding an item of luggage which we left in the taxi on the way to the train station and kindly returned to your hotel by the driver. This item was forwarded on to our next location without any problem by your excellent staff.
Superb Very friendly and helpful staff. Lovely relaxed feeling.
What could be improved: Would be nice to have a slightly more comfortable bar area.
Great hotel for visiting Amsterdam! Excellent hotel. Beautiful restored old school building. Staff was very friendly and service-oriented. Breakfast was marvellous, wished I could eat more than I could...Location just outside the very busy center of Amsterdam with all the public transport nearby. Near all the museums and concertgebouw.
What could be improved: We asked for a room not near the elevator: our room was next to the elevator. We got another room, which was again next to another elevator. We gave up, luckily the hotel was quiet at the moment we stayed. The room was very comfortable, but a bit 'clean'.
