First Impressions
You know what caught me off guard about The Amsterdam Houseboat Family – de Pijp? It’s actually moored on one of the most beautiful canals in the city, and when I first spotted it from Ruysdaelkade, I honestly thought it was just another charming Amsterdam houseboat. But this four-star floating accommodation turned out to be something pretty special — I mean, where else can you wake up to the gentle rocking of canal water while staying in the heart of Amsterdam?
The de Pijp Experience
The location is seriously unbeatable, and I get why couples rate it so highly. You’re right in de Pijp, which locals will tell you is one of the coolest neighborhoods in the city — think trendy cafés, the famous Albert Cuyp Market just a short walk away, and that authentic Amsterdam vibe without the tourist chaos of the city center. I spent my mornings grabbing coffee from the local spots nearby, and honestly, it felt more like staying in a friend’s neighborhood than being a tourist. The Heineken Experience and Rijksmuseum are close enough to walk to, but you’re tucked away from all that madness.
Living on Water
The room itself is where this place really shines — it’s got that cozy houseboat charm but with proper amenities that make you forget you’re floating. The space feels surprisingly roomy (well, for a boat anyway), and there’s something oddly soothing about hearing the water lap against the hull at night. I was a bit worried about motion sickness, but the boat is so stable you barely notice you’re on water unless you’re really paying attention. The windows give you these lovely canal views, and watching the occasional boat drift by became my new favorite pastime.
Practical Perks
What I really appreciated was how well-equipped everything was — they’ve thought through the practical stuff that matters when you’re staying somewhere unique like this. The kitchen area is compact but functional, which came in handy for storing snacks from the market. Parking can be tricky in this part of Amsterdam (let’s be real, it’s tricky everywhere in Amsterdam), but they provide clear instructions, and honestly, you probably won’t need a car anyway since everything is so walkable or easily reached by tram.
Why Guests Love It
Look, this isn’t your typical hotel experience, and that’s exactly the point. You’re getting that quintessential Amsterdam canal experience without sacrificing comfort or location. The fact that it consistently gets high marks for location tells you everything — de Pijp locals are pretty particular about their neighborhood, and this spot delivers. It’s perfect for couples who want something memorable (I can see why they rate it 9.0), but honestly, anyone looking for a genuine Amsterdam experience would love it here. Just don’t expect a traditional hotel lobby — you’re stepping into something much more authentic than that.
Locals suggest to book apartments in Amsterdam around Oud-West for artisan bakeries, vintage shops, and leafy squares.

What Our Guests Say
Small but very confortable The property is very nice and clean.
Although it's quite small (as you can see in the photos), it has everything you need to make you feel comfortable. We stayed for a week, sleeping, having breakfast, and even having dinner on one day, all perfectly.
The location is perfect, very close to the historic center, museums, etc., yet in a quiet area with all kinds of amenities.100% recommended.
What could be improved: Nothing. It has everything you need to be comfortable. As a suggestion, maybe a second chair, even if it's foldable, would be nice.
Great location & neat property! Worth double checking with host on some amenities prior to arrival. The property's neighbourhood was great. It was fairly quiet, allowing a good sleep. Being on the water was super cool. The sink outside the bathroom helps to make the one bathroom situation more manageable.
What could be improved: Some amenities listed on the property's page were not provided - ex. BBQ and conditioner. We didn't see a BBQ anywhere (it is possible that it was hiding somewhere) but the rooftop had a lot of spider webs and dust and didn't really feel very cozy, so we didn't end up asking more about it. It would have been helpful if more hooks to hang things on were provided as well as more towels.
Superb Great location. Fun to be on a houseboat on a canal in Amsterdam- great experience. Nothing like waking up and watching the boats go by on the canal.
What could be improved: Smaller than I expected.
Pretty nice setting in perfect location. Perfect location and amenities, could benefit from little upgrading in the bathroom
What could be improved: Bathroom shower situation is problematic and will lead to degradation of installations. A telephone shower, a curtain and a floor demarcation between shower and toilet would fix everything.
Also matress could be better for the price of the accomodation.
Lovely and unique stay on a houseboat! Great hostess! Wonderful and unique stay on a houseboat! Host was helpful and great hospitality.
What could be improved: Room was cozier than we expected. However, it was a lovely stay.
Close to all the attractions and good transport links Roof terrace
What could be improved: Could have a few more hangers on wall for clothes.
Great!! The view out the window
What could be improved: The cold bathroom and how small it was
Good Clean, comfortable, well equipped room
What could be improved: Was disappointed that the roof terrace was not easily accessible at the time of our visit
perfect for our visit! It was a great location for us, visiting a friend who lived in the area. It was clean and had everything we needed. comfortable bed, tasty coffee, lots of toiletries.
What could be improved: It is very small, which is okay for my partner and I who are young and out and about a lot. for someone like my mom and dad it may have been too small.
Superb Peaceful and quiet location. Place to stay without lots of other people in the accommodation as would be the case in a hotel. View of the canal! Helpful cleaning staff. Sound of rain falling on the canal one night.
What could be improved: Nothing much. Just a small pool of water in the bathroom outside the shower area after having a shower that had to be cleaned up. Otherwise, it thoroughly lived up to expectations!
