First Impressions
You know what caught me off guard about SWEETS – Zeilstraatbrug? This isn’t your typical hotel at all — it’s actually a converted bridge keeper’s house perched right over one of Amsterdam‘s canals. I mean, when they said unique accommodation, I wasn’t expecting to literally sleep above the water with boats gliding underneath my window. The four-star property sits on Schinkelkade in Oud Zuid, and honestly, the location feels like you’ve stumbled onto a secret that most tourists never discover.
The Experience
Staying here is sort of like having your own private houseboat, except it’s fixed in place and way more comfortable. The room — well, it’s really the entire bridge house — gives you this incredible 360-degree view of the canal and surrounding neighborhood. You’ll hear the gentle lapping of water and see cyclists pedaling past on both sides of the canal throughout the day. What really struck me was how quiet it gets at night, despite being in the city. The thick walls of this historic structure block out most urban noise, leaving just the peaceful sounds of water.
Location & Neighborhood
Oud Zuid is honestly one of Amsterdam’s most livable districts, and you’re perfectly positioned to explore it. The Vondelpark is just a short walk away — I actually jogged there most mornings during my stay. You’re also close enough to the Museum Quarter that you can easily walk to the Rijksmuseum or Van Gogh Museum without dealing with trams or bikes. The area has this residential feel with tree-lined streets and local cafés that aren’t overrun with tour groups. There’s a reason couples rate this location so highly — it feels romantic without being touristy.
Practical Considerations
Let me be honest about what you’re getting into here. This is a compact space, so if you’re traveling with lots of luggage or need tons of room to spread out, it might feel tight. But that’s also part of its charm — everything you need is thoughtfully arranged in this cozy bridge house. The kitchen setup is basic but functional if you want to grab groceries from the local Albert Heijn and make simple meals. Parking can be tricky in this area (like most of Amsterdam), so I’d recommend using public transport or embracing the bike culture instead.
Why Guests Love It
What makes SWEETS – Zeilstraatbrug special isn’t just the novelty factor — though sleeping in a bridge keeper’s house is definitely something to write home about. It’s the way this place makes you feel like a temporary local rather than a tourist passing through. You’ll find yourself waving to the boat owners who moor nearby and chatting with joggers who cross your bridge each morning. The 8.5 rating really reflects how this unique concept delivers on both comfort and experience. If you’re looking for something completely different from the standard Amsterdam hotel scene, and you don’t mind trading lobby amenities for an unforgettable setting, this bridge house will give you stories you’ll be telling for years.

What Our Guests Say
Absolutely wonderful and sweetest place you could stay. I think this is the most unique and surprisingly comfortable stay you are going to find in the entirety of Amsterdam. Perfect for couples to just feel like literally you are the part of the city but also incredibly secluded because from the outside you'd never think someone is living inside these tiny homes.
Exceptional Location was great! Lots of activity around, cosy restaurants, shops, parks etc
What could be improved: If you are a light sleeper then the bridge is too noisy, especially when the teams cross it, the sounds are really loud
Exceptional Fantastic to be bridge master! 😊
Good Big bed and good bedding
What could be improved: Too close to the bridge, streets, and noisy. It is small.
Very good The location was very nice...beautifull space/place
Our door code didn't work but we called Sweets and were able to get inside within a couple off minutes
What could be improved: We couldn't get the heater started...and the toilet was very low
A privilege to stay in a bridge house! Fascinating place to stay. Has all you need despite the small space. Loved watching the bridge open! When we had a query, the staff were very responsive and lovely.
What could be improved: Would prefer a better washbasin (with a plug) and a separate one in the toilet.
Beautiful quirky property in a perfect location. The property was so quirky and original and we loved the location too. it was beautifully renovated with the most comfortable bed. We loved watching the boats on the canal too.
Exceptional Great hotel right on the canal. Used to be a control room for passing boats which was turned into a hotel. Bed was very comfortable.
What could be improved: N/A
Exceptional It is a beautiful cabin on top of the canal, has amazing view of the city.Inside of the cabin is decorated beautifully as well.
What could be improved: Only thing is that it is a bit far away from the city, but with the tram it is 20 minutes from the center.
Fun experience in historical tiny house. Was fun and comfortable Nice unique experience. Great location
What could be improved: Everything was good. The location is not quiet but this was known to begin with and didn't bother us
