First Impressions
SWEETS – Wiegbrug is honestly one of the most unique places I’ve ever stayed in Amsterdam. You’re literally sleeping inside a converted drawbridge keeper’s house — and I mean that quite literally. This isn’t your typical four-star hotel experience; it’s something entirely different that feels more like staying in a piece of the city’s living history.
The Bridge House Experience
The moment you step inside, you realize this tiny bridge house was actually designed for one bridge keeper and his family back in the day. Everything is compact but incredibly thoughtful — the room feels like a ship’s cabin, with custom-built furniture that maximizes every square inch. There’s a small kitchen area that’s perfectly functional for brewing morning coffee or heating up pastries from the nearby bakeries. What really gets me is how they’ve preserved the original mechanical workings of the bridge right there in your living space.
Location in De Baarsjes
You’re staying in De Baarsjes, which honestly feels more authentic than the touristy canal ring. It’s a proper Amsterdam neighborhood where locals actually live and work. The Admiraal de Ruijterweg runs right underneath you, and watching the boats pass by — sometimes just inches from your window — never gets old. You can walk to Vondelpark in about ten minutes, and the city center is easily reachable by bike or tram.
What Makes It Special
The bridge actually still operates, which means you might hear it lifting for larger boats (though it’s not frequent enough to be disruptive). The views from the tiny windows are incredible — you’re seeing Amsterdam from an angle that maybe a dozen other people in the world get to experience as overnight guests. There’s no traditional hotel restaurant or lobby, but that’s entirely the point. This is about experiencing the city in a completely different way.
Why Guests Love It
I mean, where else can you say you’ve slept inside working infrastructure? The attention to detail is remarkable — they’ve managed to create a comfortable, modern space while respecting the building’s original purpose. It’s definitely not for everyone (if you need lots of space or traditional hotel services, look elsewhere), but for travelers who want something genuinely unique, this delivers in spades. The whole experience feels like a well-kept secret that you’ll be telling people about for years.
To book a hotel in Amsterdam during King’s Day, visitors plan ahead to balance orange-clad street parties with quiet Jordaan strolls.

What Our Guests Say
What a great and unusual way to stay in Amsterdam! Great little suite! So nicely done and such a unique experience. I loved the industrial history to the suite.
What could be improved: Books kept falling off the book shelves!
Unique stay in a comfortable, convenient place! The location was excellent. The room, especially the bed, was quite comfortable. We loved being able to see the canal right outside our windows. We had been warned that the noise of the trams might be bothersome, but it wasn't.
What could be improved: The spiral staircase up to the room felt a bit treacherous. It would have been great to have use of the outside fire escape instead.
Also, the swinging chair was charming, but it would have been nice to have an armchair or two instead.
Best place ive stayed in the 15 trips ive taken to Amsterdam Everything
What could be improved: Nothing
It was truly a valuable stay :) Thank you! The lake view from the property was absolutely relaxing. It's a bit far from the main area, yet there're many restaurants and shops nearby so it wasn't hard to have foods.
What could be improved: WiFi was weak.
Exceptional Cool experience
Superb We loved staying in the bridge house! It was in a great location, and maybe it's because we're from New York, but the noise didn't bother us at all. We loved the view and found it really nice to have the space all to ourselves.
What could be improved: Would have liked to have a way to heat up food. A small microwave or toaster oven would go a long way. Unfortunately, the wifi was problematic. Luckily we were not working, but we had to use our hotspot when we needed reliable internet. I've contacted the host to see if they will fix it as we'd like to stay here again.
Exceptional This was a unique location not too far from the city where you can watch the boats go past the apartment. The bed was really comfy and it was a cozy place to get away for a few days :)
What could be improved: As everyone has said its a bit noisy with the trams but the ear plugs helped with that :)
Fantastic Great bed and facilities
What could be improved: Egg Chair wasn’t necessary. The roof leaked the morning we left
Perfect week if you enjoy the city going about its business! Such a fun location with the bridge and canal. Perfect tram stop for all Amsterdam just across the road and good cafes and bars easy walking.
What could be improved: Generally all good. Yes, the trams were loud going over the bridge but that was expected and great fun to watch!
Loved staying there. Excellent location and comfortable suite.
What could be improved: Wifi was not strong.
