First Impressions

SWEETS – Van Hallbrug isn’t your typical hotel — it’s actually a converted bridge keeper’s house sitting right on a historic drawbridge in Amsterdam. I mean, when I first saw this place, I honestly couldn’t believe you could sleep in what used to be someone’s workplace from 1958. The tiny structure looks almost toy-like from the outside, but there’s something magical about having the Kostverlorenkade canal flowing directly beneath your feet.

The Space

Don’t expect a sprawling suite here — this three-star spot is basically a studio apartment designed for two people max. The layout is surprisingly clever though, with a compact kitchen area that has everything you need for simple meals and a sleeping area that feels cozy rather than cramped. What really gets you is the floor-to-ceiling windows on three sides — you’re literally surrounded by water and the city’s everyday rhythm of cyclists and boats.

Location & Neighborhood

Westerpark is one of those neighborhoods that locals love but tourists often miss, and that’s honestly part of the charm. You’re about a 15-minute bike ride from the Anne Frank House, but you’ll find yourself in a much quieter part of Amsterdam where people actually live and work. The area has some great cafes and that relaxed vibe you get when you step away from the tourist crowds — plus Westerpark itself is just a short walk if you want some green space.

The Experience

Here’s the thing — staying here is more about the novelty than five-star comfort. The bridge actually opens for boat traffic (though not super frequently), and when it does, you feel this gentle movement that reminds you you’re sleeping on a piece of working infrastructure. The acoustics are interesting too — you hear the city in a different way, with water sounds mixing with the usual Amsterdam bike bells and trams in the distance.

Why Guests Love It

This place scores an 8.5 for good reason — it delivers exactly what it promises without trying to be something it’s not. You’re not getting room service or a fancy lobby, but you are getting one of the most unique places to sleep in Amsterdam. It’s perfect for couples who want something different and don’t mind trading space for a story they’ll tell for years. Just know that you’ll probably spend most daylight hours exploring the city anyway — this is more about where you rest your head than where you hang out.

Exceptional Cosy set up and beautiful view of the canal. Bed was super comfortable slept like a log

What could be improved: Shower is in with toilet so toilet gets soaked when have a shower. It’s a tight space so unsure how could prevent but maybe a run around curtain

Great unique experience, highly recommend! CUTEST property ever, very tiny and cozy but SUCH an awesome experience and felt so authentic. Very clean, the bed is SO comfortable and is just overall a great way to enjoy Amsterdam. It is such a unique thing to be able to say you stayed at a bridge house!

What could be improved: It is very small so if you have a lot of luggage it might be difficult, but really has everything you would need.

Very unique, gorgeous accommodation. Location and working bridge.

What could be improved: Nothing, initially I thought the bed looked too small, however although it was small it was the most comfortable bed we had during our 6 week trip to Europe.

Bridge living! Very cool one of a kind location! Living in an Amsterdam bridge!! And a super comfortable bed!

What could be improved: Everything was really good. But if anything, maybe more food preparation options and the shower toilet set up.

Perfect little place! Perfect little spot for two people on a long weekend away. Staff were incredibly helpful when contacted and facilities were exceptional. Would love to check out their other rooms on offer!

What could be improved: Was perfect for a short stay but would recommend a bigger room for longer stays.

Beautiful home, very cozy, great location, not too far from centre but quiet. Beautiful home, very cozy, great location, not too far from centre but quiet. Great selection of hot drinks and lovely views out the window

What could be improved: The check-in was a little annoying. We were told that we might be able to check-in early, so we stayed close with suitcases, while we awaited the code. They said we would have it at 3pm at the latest. We waited until 3pm and they said the code was ready at 12 but they forgot to send. We were in the area from 11am so that was a little frustrating, however we did discover the Two Chefs Brewing bar nearby, which was lovely and had a great selection of beers brewed in Amsterdam :) Overall this will not put us off coming back here or trying another Sweets Hotel

Cute, interesting experience It’s very cute, the bead is comfy and the bridge is interesting to see in action. Good location though a 30 min walk from central it’s through a lovely bit of town with lots of bars and restaurants

What could be improved: The bathroom was a little cold. And mainly our fault for not thinking properly - it is on a main road and pretty noisy, the bridge also went in the night which woke us. Ear plugs were provided though

Must have Breakfast with the window open by the canal, comfortable bed, cleanliness, JBL speaker, waving people from passing boats.
The house is quiet.

What could be improved: You can think about the mirror in the bathroom and change the mirror over the sink in the room and vacuuming the ceiling lamp.
