First Impressions
You know what caught me off guard about SWEETS – Theophile de Bockbrug? It’s literally a converted bridge keeper’s house on a working drawbridge in Amsterdam. I mean, when they say unique accommodations, this three-star spot actually delivers on that promise. The building dates back to the 1930s and sits right over the water on Sloterkade — honestly, I’ve never stayed anywhere quite like it.
The Room Experience
The room is compact but incredibly well thought out, which makes sense when you’re dealing with a historical structure like this. Everything has been modernized while keeping the original character intact — the windows offer views of the canal that you simply can’t get from a regular hotel. There’s no restaurant on-site, but that’s actually part of the charm since you’re staying in what’s essentially a piece of Amsterdam’s infrastructure.
Location & Neighborhood
Being in Oud Zuid puts you in one of Amsterdam’s more upscale residential areas, but it’s not touristy in that overwhelming way. The tram connections are solid — you can get to the city center in about 15 minutes, but you’re also walking distance from Vondelpark. I found myself just sitting by the windows watching boats pass underneath, which sounds cheesy but it’s genuinely relaxing.
Practical Considerations
Here’s the thing about staying in a bridge house — it’s quirky in ways that might not work for everyone. The space is quite small, so if you’re traveling with lots of luggage or need tons of storage, this might feel cramped. There’s no traditional hotel services like room service or concierge, but the SWEETS team is responsive when you need them. Parking isn’t available on-site (obviously, since you’re on a bridge), but there are spots nearby if you’re driving.
Why Guests Love It
With an 8.3 rating, it’s clear that people appreciate the novelty factor, but it goes deeper than just Instagram-worthy photos. You’re staying in a piece of Amsterdam’s working history — the bridge still operates, though it rarely opens these days. The attention to detail in the renovation is impressive, and waking up surrounded by water gives you this sense of being part of the city’s daily rhythm rather than just observing it from a hotel window. It’s not for everyone, but if you want something genuinely different from your typical Amsterdam experience, this converted bridge keeper’s house delivers that in spades.

What Our Guests Say
Amazing! The view on Amsterdam!
What could be improved: Nothing at all.
Really nice place, great location and comes with everything you need. We liked it was unique and the location was great, short walk to Vondelpark. The bed was nice
What could be improved: I understand the space is very small but possibly a few other hooks to hang jackets / towels.
Very good Really quirky and fun place to stay and it was lovely to wake up on the river! Was actually slightly bigger than expected but still small. We got to see the bridge get raised for a boat which was really fun!
What could be improved: The place did seem to get quite damp due to the location of the shower. As shown you are a little overlooked but there are blinds.
Perfect when going to Essen Spiel Great location, good service.
Perfect English by all employees
What could be improved: Paying for parking, too few elevators
It was a Sweet treat. Unexpected wonderfulness. Perfect for me. The view, comfort, and cleanliness are top-notch. I simply loved it, perfect for my needs. The shower was powerful, the location was perfect for me and to look over the canal as I woke and went to sleep was a rare treat. It's small but perfectly formed in every way.
What could be improved: Downloading the app was simple enough and clear directions were given, but I arrived late at night and had problems getting it to connect to the Bluetooth through my phone, but with patience I eventually got it to work and from there there was a key passcode card to use which was much better.
Cute little bridge house exceeded expectations Amazing little place, really cute
Super comfortable bed.
Was great watching the bridge being raised for large boats multiple times
What could be improved: Not a lot, if I'm to be picky or have a suggestion then a small microwave would be really handy
Cute unique place :) Very unique kind of place - beautiful water views
What could be improved: The smell was a bit odd like old wet wood. A micro wave would have been helpful
Lovely, comfortable stay in a great location Clean, cosy and the bed was very comfortable!
What could be improved: It is a very small space
Lovely, cozy stay Incredible bed, great location, speaker in the room, funky bathroom
What could be improved: No mugs in the room, a bit pricey for its size
A bridge so dear Lovely litte 'house'. Small but comfortable. Unique views and location ambiance. Vondel Park nearby, through which you can walk to the museums. The reason I chose this place.
Others complained about the noise, but it was not bad, and was, a la Nei Diamond, " A beautiful noise".
Lovely bed
What could be improved: Not much.
Would be a bit small for two people for long stays.
