First Impressions
Honestly, when I first heard about SWEETS – Overtoomsesluis, I thought someone was pulling my leg. A hotel inside a bridge operator’s house? But walking up to this converted lock keeper’s cottage along the Overtoom canal, you realize this is exactly the kind of quirky accommodation that makes Amsterdam so special. The building dates back to the early 1900s, and you can still see the original pulley systems and mechanical bits that once controlled the sluice gates.
The Space
This isn’t your typical four-star experience — it’s something completely different. The room is actually the entire cottage, split across two levels with massive windows overlooking the canal. You’ve got a compact kitchen upstairs that’s perfectly functional (I made coffee there every morning), and the bed sits right where the bridge operator used to monitor boat traffic. The space feels intimate but not cramped, which is honestly impressive given how small these old lock houses are.
Location & Getting Around
The Oud-West neighborhood is where locals actually live, away from the tourist crowds in the center. You’re a 10-minute bike ride from Vondelpark and maybe 15 minutes to the Rijksmuseum — close enough to everything but far enough to feel like you’re experiencing real Amsterdam life. The Overtoom itself is this wonderfully lived-in street with proper Dutch cafés and shops that don’t scream “tourist trap.” Plus, watching the boats navigate through your front yard never gets old.
What Makes It Work
The folks at SWEETS have done something clever here — they’ve preserved all the industrial character while making it genuinely comfortable. The original tile work is still intact, the windows are these beautiful old steel frames, and you can actually operate some of the old bridge mechanisms (though obviously not the working parts). It feels like staying in a piece of Amsterdam’s history, which I mean, you literally are. The Wi-Fi works perfectly, by the way, in case you’re wondering about modern necessities.
Why Guests Love It
Look, this place isn’t for everyone — if you need room service and a concierge, book elsewhere. But if you want to wake up to canal views, make your own breakfast while watching cyclists pedal past, and sleep in a building that’s been part of Amsterdam’s waterway system for over a century, this is perfect. The whole experience feels authentically Dutch in a way that most hotels just can’t match. Plus, you’ll have stories that nobody else from your trip will have — I’m still telling people about the morning a barge captain waved at me through the kitchen window.

What Our Guests Say
Great value for unique Amsterdam stay Great location, fantastic space, very responsive owners!
Fabulous time and very happy. Looking forward to trying some of the other accommodations at sweets It was great being amongst everything going on. And waking up with river views.
What could be improved: Kettle but no mugs and needed an iron as needed to iron my shirts.
Absolutely amazing This place is even cuter than it looks in the pictures! The location and the view are unbeatable and the host is awesome. Staying here felt like such a magical and unique experience. It's perfect for a couple.
What could be improved: We were a little concerned about people being able to see inside. We also thought it was a bit noisy at first, but it ended up not being a problem at all.
Excellent stay. Cute concept and great location for nice/high end food + drinks if you’re a foodie. Inside the space was cozy, comfy, and actually quite quiet even though it’s on a main road.
What could be improved: *didn’t bother us but if you’re sensitive to train noise this property may be challenging
Exceptional Everything was perfect. Probably the best experience in accommodations that we’ve had so far.
excellent very clean, nice view, and wonderful experience!
What could be improved: a little noisy but it's Okay to know before.
A wonderful and unique experience. This was the most wonderful little place to stay to explore Amsterdam!
Whilst it is a little further from the centre, there was everything you need right on the doorstep - lovely cafes to get a morning coffee, great bars and restaurants, the gorgeous Vondelpark, and even a few coffeeshops - but it all came without the usual tourist overcrowding you find in the city centre. The tram stops are close by to get you wherever you want to go - but if you’re a light sleeper this might put you off as they do run late/start early and make some noise when going over the bridge.
The bridge house was very well equipped and loved everything about this cosy little home (especially the aircon during the heat) and we would love to come back here or to another Sweets Bridge house!
What could be improved: Loved it all.
a unique place to stay and enjoy Amsterdam recommended to all The entire place is lovely, functional and really cozy, great view and fantastic experience, splendid bar right in front of the property. so overall a very lovely experience.. Property has all the necessary amenities for a comfy stay.
What could be improved: noise made by the tram going over the bridge is really loud and felt in the property. This is definitively not the place for those with light sleep. Additional issue is that the kitchen sink serves as the only place where hands can be washed in the property.
Exceptional The location, loved the bridge house and view
Absolutely splendid and unique place in a wonderful location. Can't wait to go back The place is perfect, it has everything you need in such a compact and beautiful package. Such a wonderfully unique place with a spectacular view!
