First Impressions
SWEETS – Omvalbrug honestly caught me off guard — in the best possible way. This isn’t your typical four-star hotel experience; it’s actually a converted bridge keeper’s house that sits right on top of a working drawbridge in Amsterdam. I mean, when was the last time you slept inside a piece of infrastructure? The whole concept sounds quirky until you’re standing there looking at this beautifully restored little building suspended over the water, and then it just clicks.
The Experience
You know what’s wild about staying here? You’re literally living on a bridge that still operates — boats pass underneath while you’re having your morning coffee. The room itself is compact but incredibly well-designed, with huge windows that frame the canal perfectly. There’s a tiny kitchenette tucked into one corner, which actually comes in handy since you’re sort of in your own little world up there. The interior design strikes this perfect balance between honoring the building’s industrial heritage and making it feel cozy.
Location & Neighborhood
The Oost district isn’t where most tourists end up, which is exactly why I loved it. You’re about a 15-minute bike ride from the city center, but honestly, this area feels more like real Amsterdam. There’s Park Frankendael just around the corner — locals bring their dogs there, and it’s got this great organic farmers market on Saturdays. The neighborhood has that lived-in feel with plenty of cafes where you can actually get a table without fighting crowds of sightseers.
Practical Details
Here’s what you need to know: this place is tiny, so pack light. There’s no restaurant or room service — you’re basically renting a very unique apartment for the night. The check-in process is contactless, which took me a minute to figure out, but the instructions are clear enough. Parking is on the street nearby, though I’d honestly recommend just using the excellent public transport connections instead. The tram stops are walkable, and you’ll save yourself the headache of navigating Amsterdam’s parking situation.
Why Guests Love It
Look, this isn’t for everyone — if you need a concierge and turndown service, book somewhere else. But if you want something completely different, something you’ll actually remember years later, then SWEETS – Omvalbrug delivers. I’ve stayed in plenty of boutique hotels, but I’ve never fallen asleep to the gentle sound of water lapping against bridge supports. It’s quirky without being gimmicky, historic but completely comfortable. Plus, the Instagram photos practically take themselves, which doesn’t hurt.

What Our Guests Say
Exceptional Great wee place too stay right on the water. Everything about the property is perfect. We fed the swans and geese. And parakeets crows and magpies.
Great place! Worth the money. Train station 8 min by walk - excellent. I really liked how they turned such a small space into such a cosy apartment! It was nice to stay there, very comfortable bed and everything was thought through.
What could be improved: I think it can use a bit bigger sink for dishes. Other than that I can’t think of anything.
Cosy place for a short stay outside of the touristy neighborhoods Bed was super compfy and safe neighbourhood with everything you need at walking distance (10min)
What could be improved: Train and metro every few minutes just next to the window, the outside of the house was full of graffiti
Great place to add to the experience of Amsterdam. It was a great place to stay and added to the holiday. The place is small, but it's clean and has everything that is needed. The bed was also very comfy.
You are also only 5 mins walk from Amstel Station and from there you can get either the train, metro or tram into the centre.
A quirky cosy comfy little space, you won't be disappointed. The location was perfect, it is close to a train track but we loved the noise, it was easy to sleep too, it was a little like white noise. Don't be put off by the graffiti'd tunnels next door, they consist of a wine shop and a gym that's it. The room itself isn't as big as you were probably expecting but it works. The heating is amazing, the bed is the comfiest I've slept on away from home for years and the shower is exceptional. Looking forward to trying a few more of these Brug sites over the coming years.
What could be improved: No wardrobe, and there is a way this room could be designed better so you could have suitable seating and wardrobe space, but other than that, perfect little accommodation.
Really interesting and unlike any accommodation we’ve stayed in before! It was a great use of the space. The location was good near the metro stops and easy to locate. Really interesting and unlike any accommodation we’ve stayed in before! Room was lovely and clean too, the bed was really comfy and was equipped with some tea/coffee which was a nice extra touch.
What could be improved: There wasn’t any space to hang items. (There was a few pegs on the walls but no hangers). The other side of the bridge was much more picturesque, but graffiti on the bridge cannot be helped.
Superb Staff were very helpful and quick to respond. It was a nice unique stay.
What could be improved: It was far from the activity of the city. It was about a hour walk, but it was a nice walk.
Exceptional! Such a cozy little house, the bed was so comfortable!!
For active and wild adventure seacers ;) Unique house ❤️
Good location, on the bridge, that adds some adventure (as it comes up and down).
The bed was very comy 🛌
What could be improved: Need to open window for some air, while it’s extremely loud outside. People were parting right under our windows all night. I guess, it’s the spot ;) which is nice, but only if you’re up to it. Sensitive sleepers, perhaps, should look somewhere else.
The room is actually very small (2 bags will block your entire entrance), so just consider that.
Superb Very cozy and well designed space in a peculiar context: on a bridge
What could be improved: The train line close-by can be a bit noisy if you have a light sleep
