SWEETS – Hortusbrug
First Impressions You know what caught me off guard about SWEETS - Hortusbrug?
First Impressions
You know what caught me off guard about SWEETS – Hortusbrug? It’s actually a converted bridge house — like, an actual bridge keeper’s cottage sitting right on the water in Amsterdam. I mean, I’ve stayed in some unique places, but sleeping in a piece of the city’s infrastructure? That’s a first. The building dates back to the 1920s, and honestly, from the outside it looks like something out of a fairy tale.
The Experience
This four-star spot is part of SWEETS’ collection of tiny bridge houses they’ve converted into stays, and the Hortusbrug location might be my favorite. You’re essentially getting your own private apartment that happens to be perched over the Amstel River. The room is compact but cleverly designed — everything you need is there, including a small kitchenette tucked into what used to be storage space. There’s something oddly satisfying about making coffee while watching boats drift by your window.
Location Magic
The location on Doctor D.M. Sluyspad puts you right in Amsterdam City Centre, but it feels worlds away from the tourist crowds. You’re a short walk from the Hermitage museum and the botanical gardens (hence “Hortus” in the name), but tucked away enough that you feel like you’ve discovered some secret hideaway. I spent way too much time just sitting by the windows watching the canal traffic — it’s surprisingly meditative.
What Makes It Special
Look, this isn’t your typical hotel experience, and that’s exactly the point. There’s no front desk, no restaurant, no room service — just you and this incredibly unique space. The restoration work is impressive; they’ve kept the industrial charm while making it actually comfortable to live in for a few days. The views change throughout the day as the light hits the water differently, and at night, the reflections from the street lamps create this amazing shimmer effect.
Why Guests Love It
Honestly, it’s the kind of place that makes for great stories back home. Where else can you say you slept in a bridge? The 9-point rating makes sense when you consider what you’re getting — not just accommodation, but a genuine piece of Amsterdam’s working history. Sure, space is limited and parking is pretty much non-existent (this is Amsterdam, after all), but that’s part of the charm. You’re living like a local in the most authentic way possible, just with better design and much cleaner everything.

What Our Guests Say
Most memorable location, v clever space. Great coffee! Amazing experience, very memorable due to unique room type and location. Amazing use of tiny space. V secure
What could be improved: Needs a little love: scuffs, stains and some peeling on paintwork, curtains watermarked.
A really lovely place to relax and enjoy time Unique , location, price ,purpose
Had an outdoor space which we felt was very important, beautiful scenery
What could be improved: Nothing really , coukd have done with microwave but it was all perfect x
Such a unique and fun property, lovely service also. Location and fun little place, well designed
What could be improved: Spiders - can’t be helped
Different and quirky little place, felt nicely isolated and safe. Will stay again :) Location was excellent. Quirky and comfortable. Great bed!
What could be improved: Shower leaks out the door all over the floor, no biggie though.
Loved our stay at this Bridge house! Will stay at another when we return. Loved this bridge house! The botanical gardens were right next door and beautiful to visit. We were a short walking distance to nearly everything.
The covered deck was awesome and it was fun to wave at the boats traveling the canal.
The washroom was a different experience... you could literally shower, s#i+, and shave at the same time (no we didn't) - but we could have.
Book on the bridge houses was cool and interesting to read.
Great bathrobes and slippers to use, oddly no washcloths.
What could be improved: The door automatically locking every time the door closed (when going in from the fabulous covered deck to the inside). This wasn't a big deal since we were only here a short time.
No washcloths for showering. This perplexed both me and my husband as out of the 4 places we stayed on this holiday (Edinburgh, London, Paris and Amsterdam) only the 5 star hotel in Edinburgh had washcloths. How do people have a proper shower and bathe themselves without a washcloth? It was just odd to us.
Another good stay in Amsterdam This is our third stay with Sweets and again it was perfect. Hortus has the sweetest balcony and the best canal experience you can get!👍
Amazing stay Stunning views, gold location, comfortable bed, clean and tidy.
What could be improved: Condensation in the premises, but considering time of the year we went ot was understanding. Didn't spoil holiday at all
Absolutely Awesome!!! ABSOLUTELY AWESOME!!!! The location was perfect, short distance into the main area. Located close to a tram stop which was convenient when leaving with luggage!
So cosy and relaxing! Loved sitting on the balcony and watch cruise boats go buy as the sun went down.
Has wifi, was clean and a comfortable bed.
Would and have been recommending to everyone! Such a unique accommodation and cool experience!
