First Impressions
When I first heard about SWEETS – Gerben Wagenaarbrug, I honestly thought someone was pulling my leg. A four-star hotel inside an actual bridge? But there I was, standing on Kraaienplein in Amsterdam Noord, looking at what used to be the bridge keeper’s house. The whole concept is brilliantly Dutch — taking something functional and turning it into something unexpectedly charming. You know what struck me most? How they’ve managed to preserve the industrial character while making it feel genuinely welcoming.
The Bridge Experience
This isn’t your typical hotel room — it’s more like staying in a piece of Amsterdam’s history. The space feels surprisingly spacious for what it is, with huge windows that give you front-row seats to the IJ river and the city beyond. I mean, you’re literally sleeping where someone once operated this drawbridge. The design is smart too — they’ve kept the original details but added modern touches that actually work. Honestly, watching boats pass underneath while you’re having your morning coffee is something you won’t get anywhere else in Amsterdam.
Location & Neighborhood
Amsterdam Noord has this cool, slightly edgy vibe that’s completely different from the tourist-packed center. You’re right by the NDSM wharf area, which has become this creative hub with galleries, cafes, and weekend markets. The ferry to Central Station runs frequently — actually, the ride itself is pretty scenic and gives you time to decompress. What I really appreciated is how couples seem to love this spot (they rate the location 8.5, and I can see why). There’s something romantic about being tucked away on your own little island, so to speak.
Practical Considerations
Let’s be real — this isn’t for everyone. If you need a traditional hotel with room service and a lobby, look elsewhere. But if you want something memorable, this delivers. The space is well-equipped with everything you need, including a compact kitchen area that’s perfect for simple meals. I found myself cooking breakfast more often than I expected, partly because the setting made even instant coffee feel special. The booking process is straightforward, and they’re pretty responsive when you have questions.
Why Guests Love It
There’s something about staying here that makes you feel like you’ve discovered Amsterdam’s best-kept secret. Recent guests consistently rate the location highly (8.6), and after spending time here, I get it. You’re close enough to everything that matters but far enough away to feel like you’ve escaped. The novelty factor is real — I’ve stayed in plenty of boutique hotels, but none where I could say I slept in a bridge. It’s the kind of place that makes for great stories, but more importantly, it’s actually comfortable and well thought out. Just don’t expect it to feel like a regular hotel, because that’s entirely the point.
Hotel in Amsterdam reservations spike before ADE when DJs take over warehouses, barges, and basements.

What Our Guests Say
Passable The history of the building; the location
What could be improved: The smell
Old industrial look of inside the building (but this is also part of the experience)
Moisture in the curtains
Noise from the highway
The bed is very bad
(The staircases but this is also part of the experience)
Love it or hate it... This is NOT a hotel room. It's the control tower for a bridge that's no longer in use. Bedroom on the first floor, toilets and shower on the second and lounge on the third. The stairs are very steep. Very! But, it has a soul of its own. Don't know if I love it, or hate it!
Very good Location is awesome
What could be improved: Poor WIFI
Comfortable and unique The view, location and it’s quirkiness of the building
What could be improved: The bedroom was different to the pictures on booking.com and a cracked window.
This is an exceptional experience. This is a very special location: a refurbished watchtower for a mechanical bridge over a canal. It's situated at the back of the central station. You can take the free little ferries over het IJ and then easily walk to the tower. It's very cosy and well equipped and surprisingly little noise from the street.
What could be improved: It's not accessible for wheel chairs, with some steep stairs. There's no breakfast, but there's a small kitchen.
Great idea, nice location The location, interior , the general idea to live in the Haus on the bridge !
What could be improved: water in the shower poorly was going through the drain hole out.
Exceptional The chance to use the whole tower for ourselves. The location very close to Amsterdam Central a 5 minute walk and a free ferry.
What could be improved: No kitchen equipment - maybe a stove and a bigger fridge would do a lot to this place.
Because of the curtains windows can't be opened wide enough.
Great experience and proper quality The view, comfort, history. It had all we needed for a one night stay.
We chose the property because of its unique architecture. It was fun.
Great memories about that day.
What could be improved: All was good. Maybe for sensitive people it will be hard to fall asleep
sadly bad The location, the history of the place, emotions abt staying.
What could be improved: So, it was disgusting.
First of all not really clean rooms and cockroachs are everywhere.
Next one-is broken electrical system. There was no light and enternet, because something was broken, and so of that we had to change place-at my request the owner booked regular room in another hotel. So I didn’t receive any emotions and the vacation was ruined. I request owners to monitor their numbers and provide service at an appropriate price.
Very good Very cool place to stay. Great location, can get the free ferry and walk from central. Love the repurposed bridge house, it was comfortable
What could be improved: A bit noisy from the bridge traffic but earplugs were provided.
