First Impressions
Walking up to Sotel Amsterdam Central Station, you immediately get that “I’m in the thick of it” feeling that makes Amsterdam so addictive. This three-star hotel sits right on Martelaarsgracht, and honestly, the location is pretty much unbeatable — I mean, you’re literally steps from Central Station but tucked away on a quieter canal street that feels authentically Amsterdam. The building itself has that classic Dutch charm without trying too hard, and you know what? Sometimes that’s exactly what you want when you’re planning to spend most of your time exploring the city anyway.
Location & Getting Around
Here’s the thing about staying near Central Station — it sounds touristy, but it’s actually brilliant. You can walk to the Anne Frank House in about ten minutes, the Red Light District is right there (whether that’s your thing or not), and the Jordaan neighborhood with all its cozy brown cafes is just across a couple of canals. What I really love is that you’re connected to everything — trams, buses, trains to other Dutch cities, even the ferry to Amsterdam Noord if you want to check out the artsy scene over there. Couples seem to get this location strategy particularly well, which makes sense given how easy it is to wander around together without constantly checking maps.
The Room Experience
The rooms at Sotel Amsterdam Central Station are what I’d call smart and functional — they’re not trying to be something they’re not, but they nail the basics really well. You get clean lines, decent space (which matters in Amsterdam where hotel rooms can feel like ship cabins), and windows that actually let you peek at canal life if you’re lucky with your room assignment. The beds are comfortable enough that you won’t wake up cranky, and there’s enough storage space for a week’s worth of stuff without living out of your suitcase the entire time.
Neighborhood Vibe
What surprised me about this area is how it manages to feel central without being completely overrun by tourists stumbling around with their phones out. Sure, you’ll encounter plenty of visitors — it’s Amsterdam’s city center after all — but Martelaarsgracht itself has this nice residential quality where you’ll see locals heading to work or stopping by the corner shop. There’s something satisfying about staying somewhere that locals actually use too, you know? Plus, you’re close enough to duck into authentic spots like Cafe de Reiger or grab groceries at Albert Heijn without feeling like you’re in some tourist bubble.
Why Guests Love It
The real appeal here is that Sotel Amsterdam Central Station gets the balance right between location and value. You’re not paying premium prices for unnecessary frills, but you’re also not sacrificing the one thing that matters most in Amsterdam — being able to walk everywhere that counts. I think that’s why the location scores so highly with guests, especially couples who want to maximize their exploring time without dealing with complicated transit or long walks back to the hotel after dinner. It’s the kind of place that just works, which honestly might be the best compliment you can give a city hotel.
Hotels near me in Amsterdam deliver easy walks to Vondelpark, Rijksmuseum, and charming bridge-lined waterways.

What could be improved: elevator/ lights
Very good perfect location next to the station. property had elevator.
Very good value for money, clean in very good location. Will go back! Hotel is really good value for the money and in great location next to Amsterdam Central station! People in reception were very kind and communicative and my request for extended check out was very kindly accepted. Will go back!
Convenient and central Very central and walking distance to every main location and tourist attraction. The room was big enough for few days stay and was clean; very comfy bed , coffee machine available and super friendly staff.
What could be improved: Being so central also means noise from the street and people going in and out all times during the night makes it difficult to sleep if you’re a light sleeper. The only negative this is the the bathroom door, which is not an actual door but more a glass sliding panel which serves no privacy whatsoever and won’t properly close, so it’s not the best if you’re looking for privacy while sharing the room.
Good value for money in a great location in Amsterdam Small but cozy room, great air con. Lovely bed. Free coffee location is fantastic. Lift. Lovely staff and reception team.
What could be improved: Shower is a wet room so a bit messy. Toilet door is made of glass and can be seen from the bed. A bit odd
