First Impressions
Walking up to Residence Inn by Marriott Amsterdam Houthavens, you immediately notice how different this feels from typical Amsterdam hotels. This four-star property sits in the Westpoort area — honestly, it’s not where most tourists end up, but that’s actually what makes it interesting. The building has this sleek, modern look that fits perfectly with the ongoing development happening around Houthavens.
The Neighborhood Reality
Let me be straight with you about the location — you’re not stumbling out your front door onto a canal-lined street with cheese shops. Westpoort is Amsterdam’s emerging district, and it feels more like staying in a residential area where actual locals live. The good news? Central Station is about 15 minutes away by tram, and you’ll actually appreciate coming back to this quieter corner after dealing with the crowds around Dam Square.
What You’re Actually Getting
The apartment-style accommodations here are where this place really shines. Each unit comes with a proper kitchen setup — not just a mini-fridge and microwave, but actual cooking space with a stovetop and everything. I mean, after a few days of tourist meals, being able to grab groceries and make your own breakfast feels pretty great. The living areas are spacious enough that you don’t feel like you’re camping out in a hotel room.
Daily Amenities
There’s a decent fitness center that’s actually usable (not just two broken treadmills), and the breakfast situation is solid without being fancy. The staff runs a pretty efficient operation — check-in was smooth, and they seem to know what they’re doing. Parking is available too, which honestly matters more than you’d think if you’re planning any day trips outside the city.
Why Guests Love It
What really works about this place is the space and the practical setup. Families especially seem to appreciate having room to spread out, and the kitchen means you’re not eating every single meal out (your wallet will thank you). The Houthavens area itself is growing — there’s a restaurant or two within walking distance, and the waterfront development is actually pretty nice for evening walks. It’s not the postcard Amsterdam experience, but it’s a comfortable base that lets you explore the city without feeling like you’re living in a shoebox.

What Our Guests Say
Superb Friendly staff, nice breakfast. Quit and relaxing.
A wonderful vacation We chose this hotel because we wanted a room with a great view, and we were not disappointed.. We were provided with a room that offered a breathtaking view, which we enjoyed for four days. I took some amazing photos while admiring the scenery. The staff were very friendly and attentive, and the overall atmosphere of the hotel was pleasant. We would definitely return soon and would recommend this hotel to others.
Thank you for making our stay so memorable.
Best wishes, Inna and Victor.))
Exceptional Excellent hotel in a modern area of Amsterdam. There is everything you need for life in comfortable and clean conditions. The staff is pleasant, cleaning was every day. I am very pleased that I chose this hotel.
What could be improved: a bit far from the center, but on taxi or car is not a problem, but an advantage.
Exceptional I made 2 special requests. The hotel did their utmost to grant them. It was an excellent venue to watch Sail Amsterdam 2025
Good but far from the centre Great staff, facilities, large rooms, great bar
What could be improved: The location is too far from the centre and not very well connected
Great hotel away from busy town centre. Nice and quiet out of town location. Room was spaciois and clean. Great outlook over the industrial dockland area. Hotel is near a high- frequency bus route into town . Easy bike as well. 15 min walk to local shops Very good breakfast offered.
What could be improved: If being picky..The smell of the grain processing on / off the barge boats may trigger heyfever. Hotel Maintenance did not fix a T V issue when reported.
Great place Everything great
What could be improved: Nothing
Nice hotel but a long way from anything. The view of the harbour below our room was good with all the passing barges and boats off a working port. Large comfortable room with a kitchen. Access to laundry facilities was also a plus. Very nice breakfast.
What could be improved: The location is a long way from anything else. Just commercial offices around so dead on the weekend. Hire bikes from the linked Moxy hotel are not good - very heavy and poorly geared for a day’s ride. I would look elsewhere next time.
It was a delightfull stay, I would stay there again. The hotel main win is that it is located on a harbour and the views were amazing, that being said, it takes sometime to reach shops and supermarkets. Unless you rent a bike. The rooms were impeccably cleaned, and everything was neatly placed. The one thing that bothers me was the lack of lighting, in our suite there were no lights on the pantry area itself ( backlight) there is one single tiny light source on the ceiling. Other than that, the hotel was very comfortable.
Very good The room was spacious and very clean, with a fantastic big window. The kitchen was also very good and well equipped with various utensils - better than another apartment hotel we stayed. Breakfast was minimum for this kind of hotel, I thought, but it's okay.
What could be improved: The view from the the room was gorgeous and fantastic, and we totally enjoyed the view of many ships and barges slowly passing by. However, I was mildly concerned about the constant white smoke from a factory chimney on the other side of the canal, and dust from a barge from which crops (I think) were reshipped to smaller barges day and night.
