First Impressions
Walking up to Pulitzer Amsterdam along the Prinsengracht, you’d honestly never guess what awaits inside. The entrance is understated — almost secretive — tucked between the classic canal houses that make this stretch of Amsterdam so iconic. But step through those doors and you realize this five-star property is something entirely different: 25 interconnected 17th and 18th-century townhouses that have been transformed into one of the city’s most sophisticated hotels.
The Architecture and Atmosphere
What strikes you immediately is how they’ve managed to preserve the intimate scale of these historic buildings while creating something undeniably luxurious. You’re wandering through a maze of corridors, staircases, and courtyards — each turn reveals another perfectly restored room or a glimpse into one of the hidden gardens. The central courtyard garden is particularly magical, especially in the evening when it’s softly lit and feels like Amsterdam’s best-kept secret.
Location and Neighborhood
The location is honestly perfect if you want to experience real Amsterdam. You’re right in the Negen Straatjes (Nine Streets) area, which means you can walk to the Anne Frank House in about five minutes, but you’re also surrounded by the kind of independent boutiques and brown cafés that locals actually frequent. The Westerkerk is practically next door, and I mean that literally — you’ll hear the bells throughout the day, which somehow adds to the charm rather than being annoying.
The Room Experience
Each room feels completely unique because, well, they are — you’re staying in buildings that were once private homes, so no two spaces are identical. Some have canal views (worth the upgrade if you can swing it), others overlook the interior gardens. The interiors blend period details with contemporary luxury perfectly — think original wooden beams paired with modern marble bathrooms and artwork that actually means something. The beds are exceptional, and honestly, the blackout curtains are a godsend if you’re dealing with jet lag.
Why Guests Love It
The restaurant, Jansz, serves excellent contemporary Dutch cuisine, though I’d also recommend just wandering the neighborhood for dinner — you’re spoiled for choice here. What really sets this place apart is the service; the staff genuinely knows Amsterdam and can point you toward experiences you won’t find in guidebooks. There’s also something special about having your morning coffee in that central garden, watching the city wake up through the windows of the surrounding canal houses. It’s the kind of place that makes you feel like you’re staying in someone’s beautifully curated home rather than a traditional hotel.
Best hotels in Amsterdam blend canal-view balconies, design interiors, and farm-to-table breakfast spreads.

What Our Guests Say
Great service, clean, but over priced. Great service, clean rooms. Excellent location. All the staff is very helpful and attentive, and happy to help as needed. Location is close to the heart of amsterdam meaning many things are in walking distance.
What could be improved: Food was fine but not excellent. Room is very small which wasn't unexpected as this is warned under the room I selected, but for the price it is quite surpising how little you get. Lovely hotel just a bit over priced.
Unusual and exceptional hotel in a great location with an attentive staff and fabulous breakfast. Beautiful, clean rooms. Such an interesting eclectic hotel which is made up of many old canal homes now combined . Wonderful staff that were very helpful and knew the history of this fabulous hotel. The location was perfect to sightsee. The breakfast was outstanding and we appreciated that you could even order off the plethora of food choices displayed so beautifully. Even had Prosecco if you wanted. We loved all the gardens attached to this hotel that you could relax and enjoy .
What could be improved: Cannot think of anything to improve this hotel.

Luxury unique hotel full of charm in a great location. We chose to return to the Pulitzer for our Honeymoon. Beautiful hotel in a great location if you want to be in the canal ring area of Amsterdam. Easy walking distance from so many of the local attractions and huge choice of restaurants, cafes, bars and shops. The rooms are sumptuous and full of charm and the beds….they are amongst the most comfortable we’ve ever experienced and we travel ALOT with our work!!! . There was a congratulatory bottle of champagne on ice and delicious chocolates waiting in our room on arrival which was a lovey welcome!
What could be improved: Nothing we didn’t like - it was as beautiful as we remembered it from our first visit there.
It’s not the cheapest hotel but for us, worth the extra money to stay there.
Can’t wait to come back. We even had perfect weather! Location, food and excellent staff service
What could be improved: Nothing
