First Impressions
When I first heard about Plantage Hortus Apartments, I’ll admit I was curious about the name — turns out it’s perfectly fitting for this four-star property scattered throughout Amsterdam’s leafy Plantage district. You know what struck me immediately? These aren’t your typical hotel rooms but actual apartment-style accommodations, which honestly makes so much sense when you’re staying in Amsterdam for more than just a quick weekend. The setup gives you that authentic local living experience while still having the backup of professional hospitality services.
The Plantage Advantage
I mean, the location really is something special here — couples consistently rate it 8.6, and after spending time in the area, I totally get why. The Plantage district sits right in the city center but feels refreshingly calm compared to the tourist chaos around Dam Square. You’re literally walking distance from the Hortus Botanicus (hence the name, I suspect), and the Jewish Cultural Quarter is right there too. What I love is that you can stroll to the major museums in about fifteen minutes, but when you come home in the evening, you’re in this quieter, more residential pocket of the city.
Living Like a Local
Each room setup varies since they’re spread across different buildings in the district, but that’s actually part of the charm — you might end up in a canal house conversion or a more modern building, depending on availability. Most units come with a proper kitchen area, which is brilliant if you want to grab fresh ingredients from the local markets (Albert Cuyp isn’t far) or just make coffee the way you like it. The furnishings lean modern and practical rather than fancy, but everything works well and feels thoughtfully chosen.
Getting Around and Settling In
One thing to know upfront — parking in central Amsterdam is always going to be a challenge, so I’d honestly recommend ditching the car idea altogether. The tram connections from this area are excellent though, and you’ll find yourself walking more than you expected anyway. The check-in process can vary depending on which building you’re assigned to, but the staff I dealt with were genuinely helpful with local recommendations. They seem to actually know the neighborhood rather than just rattling off tourist highlights, which made a real difference.
Why Guests Love It
Look, this isn’t going to be the fanciest place you’ve ever stayed, but there’s something really satisfying about having your own space in such a prime location. The 7.1 rating reflects what you’d expect — solid, reliable, well-positioned accommodations without any major surprises (good or bad). What keeps people coming back is that perfect balance of independence and support, plus you’re genuinely living in one of Amsterdam’s most pleasant residential areas. For the price point and location, especially if you’re planning to stay more than a couple nights, it’s honestly hard to beat this setup in the heart of the city.
Apartments in Amsterdam suit families with canal-facing windows, full kitchens, and sunset bike rides through De Pijp.

What Our Guests Say
Spacious apartment at great location Location was great, across the small quiet street from tiny park by the canal. It is 20 min walk from the center. We had a penthouse. The main bedroom and the living room were huge, but the two additional bedrooms were tiny.
The apartment was very clean and had all the necessary amenities. Staff was great.
This is an old building, so no elevator and be prepared to drag your baggage up and down a very steep and narrow stairs. But his is true for all old buildings in Amsterdam.
What could be improved: The biggest frustration was the shower head. Sounds strange but they had a hygiene shower head for the regular shower. So, the water pressure and volume was terrible.
Also, in the penthouse both toilets are on the lower floor and you have to walk down the steep stairs from two bedrooms and a living room to go to bathroom.
Finally, the check in and check out location is 8 minute walk away from the apartment.
Would stay again - Advise you get the apartment address from reception and wifi when collecting keys The property has a spacious living room/kitchen perfect for groups to hang out.
The room sizes were good and comfortable beds. Large bath. Clean. Shower had nice hot water.
Good location.
What could be improved: There was no internet. - We were not given the password with our checkin info letter. We emailed for it and they replied but the login details provided still didn't work.
On collecting the key card at reception. We were told to turn left and then left again at the coffee shop. We went back as we couldn't find the apartment and asked for the google maps address. It was 15 minute walk away and we never would have found it from the spoken directions as we passed many coffee shops on the way (when given directions, it sounded like it was just round the corner).
One bathroom where the shower pressure wasn't great but was nice hot water.
Stairs - I understand all stairs in Amsterdam are steep. If you have a disability do not book and look for a ground floor place. We had to climb 3 sets of stairs and then once inside, you have to climb another set of stairs for two of the bedrooms and the living room/kitchen.
Excellent stay from start to finish. Location and access to metro was excellent. Staff friendly and helpful.
Good apartment but difficult to get up to with heavy luggage Spacious room
What could be improved: No elevator
Very good The area is very good, the apartment itself is good, you can get there by tram without any problems. The place is convenient, quiet, I can recommend it.
What could be improved: We stayed for 4 nights, unfortunately we didn't see any staff there, the toilet tap was leaking and we didn't want to go to the reception at the hotel, which is 500 meters from the apartments.
Good Location
A beautiful, airy, magical apartment in a cool, hip suburb surrounded by eateries, parks & culture We had a beautiful top floor apartment which was organised over two floors, with three bedrooms and a beautiful lounge/diner. We are a family of 5 and there was so much space - it was brilliant! Also loved being able to watch the parrots in the treetops that the apartment was surrounded by. Beds were really comfortable.
What could be improved: Overall the apartment was very clean but a few little things stood out e.g. there was a piece of chewing gum stuck to the wall by one of the beds, the bath and kitchen sink didn't have a plug and there was limited cutlery and crockery. The stairs between the two floors of the apartment were really steep which was fine for us but would not suit a family with a toddler or anyone with accessibility issues - but we get the sense this is common to all apartments in Amsterdam that are set in historic buildings.
Location was great. Location. Staff responded quickly . Clean.
What could be improved: No instructions for fan/AC. Check in/out was far. Bathtub too high. Mirrors too high. Having a washer/dryer would be nice . More towels to start
Enjoyed our stay, better WiFi would have helped a lot, price was high for what is was Location, size of apartment and comfort of beds, easy access to metro/trams
What could be improved: WiFi was terrible, We saw a mouse one night in the kitchen
Good Good location, comfortable flat, and super helpful staff
What could be improved: We were not aware that the flat assigned to us would be on the third floor, stairs are supper narrow and steep so with luggage it was a hassle but the staff helped us out.
