First Impressions
Walking up to Olive Bed and Breakfast on Gerard Doustraat, you’d almost miss it if you weren’t looking — and honestly, that’s part of its charm. It sits quietly among the typical Amsterdam townhouses, with just a small sign to mark the spot. The entrance feels more like stepping into someone’s home than checking into a hotel, which I mean, essentially it is. There’s something refreshing about that intimacy after dealing with the usual hotel reception desk circus.
Location & Neighborhood
You’re right in the thick of De Pijp, which locals will tell you is where Amsterdam actually lives and breathes. The Albert Cuyp Market is literally around the corner — I’m talking a two-minute walk where you can grab fresh stroopwafels that are still warm. Vondelpark is close enough for morning runs, and you can reach the museum district without breaking a sweat. What I really love though is how this area stays alive after the tourist crowds thin out, with actual neighborhood cafés and late-night spots that aren’t trying to sell you overpriced beer.
The Room Experience
The room I stayed in was compact but thoughtfully arranged — you know, the kind of space where everything has its place and somehow it all works. Clean lines, decent lighting, and a bed that didn’t leave me counting sheep all night. The bathroom was small but functional, with good water pressure (always a win in older Amsterdam buildings). There’s free WiFi that actually works, which sounds basic but you’d be surprised how many places mess this up.
Daily Rhythms
Mornings here start with a simple breakfast setup — nothing fancy, but fresh bread, local cheeses, and coffee that’ll wake you up properly. The hosts are genuinely helpful without being overwhelming, sharing neighborhood tips that you won’t find in guidebooks. They actually live here, so when they suggest a spot for dinner or tell you which tram to take, it comes from real experience rather than a tourism manual.
Why Guests Love It
This three-star place works because it doesn’t try to be something it’s not. You’re getting a clean, comfortable base in one of Amsterdam’s best neighborhoods, run by people who care about your experience without the corporate polish. The 8.2 rating makes sense — it’s solid, reliable, and priced fairly for what you get. If you want a massive lobby and room service, look elsewhere. But if you prefer exploring the city over hanging around your hotel, and you appreciate staying somewhere with actual personality, Olive Bed and Breakfast delivers exactly what it promises.

What Our Guests Say
Overall pleasant. Excellent location, easy check in, mini fridge with water (though water was not complimentary), easy communication with host. Room As described.
What could be improved: Hand soap dispenser was near empty (until cleaned on our 5th day). Fortunately we brought our own hand soap bar just in case. Also the shower door wasn’t sealed properly so water leaked all over the floor and only one towel per guest was provided (until cleaned on 5th day). We had to use our bath towels to clean up leakage and then reuse them. Not fun.
Unique experience Quite unique place, a real Amsterdam house experience.
What could be improved: The stairs was very steep and narrow, almost like climbing to a ladder 😀
Great accommodation in the middle of Amsterdam The accommodation has unbelievable top location! You can reach everything by foot really fast, and also the connection for a public transport was 2-5min by walk from the apartment. The room was spacious and we didn’t have any problems to find it.
What could be improved: For us it was not a problem - but maybe for an old people the stairs were a bit steep..
It was an enjoyable experience with the real flavour of Amsterdam A very authentic Amsterdam experience. Suite is in the attic of a typical rowhouse and was very bright and clean. Stairs were a bit daunting at first but were managable after we got used to them and are typical of the area. Great breakfast and coffee just steps from the door and lots of good restaurants in the area. In the De Pijp district and within walking distance to the canal district, the Museumplein and the Vondelpark.
What could be improved: We had been looking forward to access to a washing machine but at 15 euros per load, we did without.
Superb Amazing location! Bed was super comfy! Well equipped attic! Owners were so lovely !
What could be improved: The stairs- somthing that can not be changed, but please be aware there are about 3 flights of narrow vertical stairs - pack your bags light! Room is at top of building in Attic
Very pleasant stay in a lovely vibrant location outside of the main tourist area. The location was great with many places to eat around and also a great market minutes away. We also enjoyed the park which was about 15 minutes walk. Also Van Gough Museum and other museums are at walkable distance. The location is very well connected to the city centre with the metro and tram.
The room was very clean, it's a shame that despite been listed as bed and breakfast, breakfast wasn't actually provided :-(
Small fridge in the room was also a bonus to store own drinks.
What could be improved: Be careful where you choose to eat as prices are quite high even for the most basic restaurants.
Also very steep stairs (4 ramps) to reach the room which can be quite dangerous for young children or for somebody with limited mobility.
Great location and value for money Location is lovely, facility as you would expect, all in all great value for money
What could be improved: The host lives on the second floor and guests get the third floor. The door on third floor didn't lock which we would have preferred. The door going into second floor can be locked so didn't feel too nervous. Shower and toilet are quite transparent so get ready to get intimate with your companions
Superb great service, clean rooms, great location. everything as advertised
What could be improved: the stairs to the attic are pretty steep
clean tidy room and good location very clean bedsit room. Very comfortable bed and quiet although on a Main Street. good heading for a warm room. Very central and right by the metro and train stops so easy to get around town. Markets at the end of the street so great to walk through for shopping
What could be improved: Three flights of internal stairs to access the top floor are extremely steep and narrow so not suitable for anyone with any form of mobility problems or poor balance. Toilet is in the room with tinted glass door so not very private when sharing the room but manageable
Superb Great location.
Very cozy.
