Nassau Canal Suites – in the heart of the city

First Impressions Walking up to Nassau Canal Suites – in the heart of the city on Nassaukade, you immediately get that "this is the real Amsterdam" feeling.

First Impressions

Walking up to Nassau Canal Suites – in the heart of the city on Nassaukade, you immediately get that “this is the real Amsterdam” feeling. The building sits right along one of those classic canals that makes you want to grab your phone for photos, but honestly — the location is so good that you’ll be too busy exploring to spend much time in your room during the day. This four-star property doesn’t try to be flashy or over-the-top, which I actually appreciate. It feels authentic to the neighborhood, and that matters when you’re staying in Oud-West.

The Oud-West Advantage

You know what’s brilliant about this spot? You’re in one of Amsterdam’s most livable neighborhoods without the tourist chaos of the city center. The Nassaukade area has this perfect mix of local cafés, vintage shops, and tree-lined streets that feel genuinely Dutch. I mean, couples rate the location 9.8 out of 10 for good reason — you can walk to Vondelpark in about ten minutes, catch a tram to the museums easily, but still feel like you’re experiencing how locals actually live. The canal views from some rooms are pretty spectacular too, especially in the early morning when the light hits the water just right.

What Makes It Work

The suites here are thoughtfully designed — not huge, but smart with space in that European way. Each one has a proper seating area and enough storage that you’re not living out of your suitcase for the entire stay. The kitchenette setup is actually functional if you want to grab groceries from the local Albert Heijn and make coffee the way you like it. The staff seems to genuinely know the area well, which makes a difference when you need recommendations that go beyond the obvious tourist spots.

Getting Around

Here’s something I really noticed — the public transport connections are excellent from this part of Nassaukade. Tram stops are close enough that you don’t need to plan your life around getting places, but far enough that you’re not dealing with constant noise. Parking can be tricky in this part of Amsterdam (like everywhere else in the city), but honestly, you probably don’t need a car anyway. The bike rental places nearby are your better bet for getting around like a local.

Why Guests Love It

The location score of 9.7 tells the real story here — this is one of those places where everything just works geographically. You’re close enough to walk to the Jordaan for dinner, near enough to the Leidseplein for nightlife if that’s your thing, but you get to come home to a quieter, more residential vibe. The canal setting gives you those classic Amsterdam moments without feeling like you’re staying in a postcard. It’s the kind of place that makes you think about planning your next Amsterdam trip before you’ve even left.

Amsterdam hotels keep travelers close to cycling routes, floating flower markets, and tram lines to hidden gems.

For a short stay, the apartment is nice, due to its good location. Cleanliness is up to your maintenance - no chance to The location of the property was super nice, quiet neighborhood, but still close to city center as well as the foodhallen. Everything was in 20-25 minute walking range max.
The apartment was clean, communication was great and quick.

What could be improved: The price is a little too high for what you get - I didn’t quite understand the „kitchen“ situation - two plates and cutlery, tiny fridge but no sink for the dishes, nor dish soap. Also, no stove/microwave whatsoever.
I missed at least a broom as well, especially if you’re planning a longer stay.

It felt like the hosts just added two apartments to two rooms you‘d usually use in a single family house.
The apartment is not really soundproof either, you can hear when other people are walking through the building.

Pleasant Great location, despite the nearby construction and distribution of tram service

It was warm, comfy and dry during a very soggy weekend.

What could be improved: The place began to feel a bit Spartan. I loved the coffee machine but there weren't even spoons to stir. For us, who like to eat breakfast where we stay, not to cook but a couple of bowls and a knife would have been great and maybe a roll of paper towels.

We made it work but c'mon. This is not a hostel. We were paying €150 a night. I bet the hostels have bowls and spoons for coffee.

We lived in Amsterdam. We loved there stairs and basement space. Gezellig. More hospitality and less minimalism.

While the room had its good points, we were mostly unimpressed. We mainly chose this hotel as close to where our son lives. Main room was nice and large, clean and nicely painted white. Good bathroom, large shower, double basins in vanity unit. It had a dining table with two chairs, plus a small fridge.

What could be improved: Totally unexpected and a big surprise was the fact our allotted room was in the basement, with only two high level windows at footpath level. It was even more surprising, as we had booked months in advance. The room was only serviced by one spiral staircase, (no lift). This was the steepest and narrowest set of spiral stairs I have ever tried to scramble up or down in my life. Huge problems lifting heavy suitcases up and down, and dangerous to descend. These would be totally illegal in NZ.
In the 9 -10 days there, we didn't see any hotel staff at all, even when we checked in and out. After day 3 or 4 we had to ask for a change of towels. They appeared the next day while we were out. We never got a third set of towels. No cleaning of the room was done, and there was no collection of rubbish in the whole time we were there. We were supplied with two single beds joined together, with single sheets and blankets interwoven on top. Not ideal for a married couple.
There was a kettle for making tea or coffee, plus cups and plain glasses, but no knives, forks or spoons. And no wine glasses or plates, (I think one tea towel). No microwave or toaster. No pictures on the wall to brighten up the room.
The toilet is totally separate from the bathroom, on the other side of the bedroom. Manageable but annoying. The ventilation was poor, and often seemed to be off, with no way to control it. The toilet fan was mostly not working. There was also only one door key.

Nice stay, not great, not bad. Liked the location

What could be improved: Our unit was a bit tattered and could use a freshening up.

Good Great location, walking distance to most attractions and quite a large room. Easy check in instructions.

What could be improved: Black mould in the bathroom as there is no exhaust or window in the bathroom

Clean convenient basement room Very convenient and clean. A small espresso machine was a nice touch. Cleaning staff was excellent.

What could be improved: The property manager was, at times difficult to reach. Generally street noise wasn’t a problem except for Friday night. Stairs to the basement are narrow and steep if you have heavy bags.

It was good. No breakfast at all. I didn't see anyone during my stay. Very steep and narrow steps down to the room. No TV. No one greet me, it's hard if you travel alone, not to have anyone to ask questions.
The room comfortable and nice bathroom.

What could be improved: Booking offered free taxi. Not in sight. It would have been nice to be greeted by someone, not just a phone call.

Comfortable space Good space - good size and nice to have a table, chairs and an arm chair to relax in. Bed was very comfortable (although could feel that it was 2 single mattresses put together). Good bathroom and shower. Keys were left where advised and easy to get in

What could be improved: The stairs down to the apartment are a bit hard to negotiate - I was expecting Dutch steep steps but these were narrow with 2 turns - it was a challenge getting my bag up and down the stairs. With it being a basement it was a bit hard to air out the apartment - the windows opened but being a basement apartment but I was just a bit cautious.

great location, just fine accommodations. location was great, very close to city center and buses and trams. clean space, interesting things to do nearby, nice neighborhood.

What could be improved: the room was subterranean and right next to the street, so we heard loud street noises all night. It was difficult to open the lock box to get the keys for our room. there was a giant hole in the wall in the bathroom that definitely was connected to some pipes and had a smell coming from it. wish there had been soap in the small bathroom as well, instead you had to walk over to the shower room to wash your hands. only two towels per person, and only one of them was large enough to cover yourself with. there was no welcome letter or information—we had to call to ask for WiFi. there’s one duvet but not too sheer or lighter blanket, which was challenging for how hot it was in the room.

A good location for a short visit to Amsterdam Easy to access. Very spacious room. Lots of light given that it was a basement room. Great shower room. Soft, but comfortable mattresses.

What could be improved: Booked as a twin so I thought the beds would be separated but this wasn’t possible.
