First Impressions
Max Brown Hotel Canal District, part of Sircle Collection sits right on Herengracht, and I mean literally — you step out the front door onto one of Amsterdam’s most famous canals. The building itself is this gorgeous 17th-century canal house that’s been transformed into a restaurant and hotel, but they’ve kept all the original character. You know those classic Amsterdam facades with the tall, narrow windows? This is exactly that, but without feeling like a tourist trap.
Location & Neighborhood
Honestly, the location is pretty much perfect if you want to be in the heart of Amsterdam without dealing with the chaos of Dam Square every time you leave your room. You’re a five-minute walk to the Anne Frank House (though good luck getting tickets last minute), and the Jordaan neighborhood is right there with all its cozy brown cafés. The Nine Streets shopping area is basically around the corner, which is where locals actually shop instead of the touristy spots.
The Room Experience
The rooms are definitely on the smaller side — this is Amsterdam, after all, where space is premium — but they’ve made smart use of every inch. I stayed in one of the canal-facing rooms, and waking up to that view of the Herengracht never got old. The design feels modern but respectful of the building’s history, with exposed beams and original features mixed with contemporary touches. The beds are actually comfortable, which isn’t always a given in these historic conversions.
Dining & Atmosphere
The ground floor restaurant becomes the heart of the place in the evenings. It’s not just hotel guests eating there — locals come by too, which is always a good sign. The breakfast setup is simple but solid, with proper Dutch cheese and fresh bread. What I really appreciated was that it doesn’t feel like a three-star hotel trying too hard to be fancy. Instead, it knows what it is and does it well.
Why Guests Love It
Look, if you’re expecting a big chain hotel experience with a massive lobby and room service, this isn’t that. But if you want to stay somewhere that feels authentically Amsterdam — where you can hear the canal boats go by and walk to pretty much everything worth seeing — then Max Brown gets it right. The staff actually knows the neighborhood and can point you toward the good stroopwafel place (not the one all the guidebooks mention). Plus, parking isn’t impossible to find nearby, though honestly, you won’t need a car once you’re here.

What Our Guests Say
A memorable stay in a very quaint hotel The property was well situated within walking distance of attractions within Amsterdam. The staff were friendly and courteous and were very helpful with all our enquiries
What could be improved: Obviously being an old building there was no elevator which made getting luggage up steep stairs a slight problem. One of the rooms was smaller than expected. Apart from these minor setbacks there were no other problems
Very relaxing. Room was comfortable and breakfast good value.
Lovely staff and great location Friendly staff. Clean rooms. Good location.
Lovely location, beautiful and peaceful room, fabulous attention by staff. It was a great experience from start to finish - the staff, in particular, were great and couldn't do enough for us. Their recommendations were spot on. The room was sweet and very peaceful.
What could be improved: I can't think of anything.
Outstanding hotel in outstanding city Location was outstanding, staff was outstanding, room was charming.
What could be improved: Our room was pretty loud, but it’s to be expected in an old building
Nice pleasent days Really charming and good location. The canal and the street were really beautiful
What could be improved: The breakfast was not incredible, it had the basics but since we have a baby we didn’t had a lot to choose from.
Very good Nice and quiet Hotel in the centre of Amsterdam. Great staff and really good breakfast.
A welcoming and well-located spot, ideal for a short Amsterdam stay Check-in was smooth, with easy communication and a lovely touch - we could help ourselves to a complimentary glass of wine on arrival. The location was fantastic, just a short stroll from all the action and Central Station. Perfect for a quick stay in the city.
What could be improved: Wow - those stairs were definitely a challenge with luggage! That said, it’s pretty typical for Amsterdam, so not unexpected, just something to be aware of.
Good Location
Great stay. Location is close to main attractions/ spots. Would definitely stay here again. Great location. Staff are friendly. However, AC was not working. Thank goodness the weather was cool.
