First Impressions
Walking up to JoyJoyJoy the Royalty ecolicous design house in a historic Canalhouse from 1618 with 2 bedrooms with top floor views over the canals on Herengracht, you immediately know you’ve found something special. I mean, the name alone tells you these folks don’t take themselves too seriously, but the 17th-century facade? That’s pure Amsterdam magic right there. This four-star property sits right in the canal ring — honestly, you can’t get more central than this without actually living in the Rijksmuseum.
The Historic Setting
What really gets me about this place is how they’ve managed to preserve that authentic canalhouse feel while making it actually livable for modern travelers. The building dates back to 1618, which means it’s older than most countries, and you can feel that history in the steep stairs and original details. The location score of 9.8 isn’t just marketing fluff — you’re literally steps from everything that matters in the city center, and couples seem to get this immediately.
The Space Itself
The two-bedroom setup works brilliantly, especially if you’re traveling with friends or want some extra space to spread out. But honestly, it’s those top floor views that’ll get you — looking out over the canals from up there, especially in the evening when the lights start reflecting on the water, it’s pretty much what you came to Amsterdam to see. The room design leans into that “ecolicous” concept they mention, which I gather means eco-friendly meets delicious aesthetics, and it actually works better than it sounds.
Location Perks
Being on Herengracht puts you right in the sweet spot of Amsterdam’s canal belt. You know what I love about this location? You can walk to the Anne Frank House in about eight minutes, hit the Jordaan neighborhood for dinner, or wander over to the Nine Streets for shopping — all without dealing with trams or bikes (though you should definitely rent a bike anyway, because Amsterdam). The fact that couples rate this so highly for romantic trips makes total sense when you’re literally surrounded by some of the most photogenic canals in the city.
Why Guests Love It
Look, Amsterdam has plenty of hotels, but finding one that gives you authentic canalhouse vibes without feeling like you’re camping in a museum — that’s the trick this place pulls off. The 7.8 rating reflects what you’d expect from a well-run property that doesn’t try to be everything to everyone. It’s quirky enough to feel special, historic enough to feel authentic, and located perfectly enough that you’ll probably spend less time in your apartment than you planned because everything worth seeing is right outside your door. Plus, there’s something refreshingly honest about a place that calls itself “JoyJoyJoy” and actually delivers on that promise.

What Our Guests Say
lovely and magical this is a wonderful ancient canalhouse in centraL Amsterdam It is one of the oldest houses in the city. For that reason the stairs are steeper and skinnier but it is very central. if you dont like very skinny stairs dont book it. we loved the fun of it and the incredible history. The people in the building were close but this is Amsterdam and the ultimate city living. The owner has gone to a-lot of trouble to make the stay pleasant and we loved it
What could be improved: make sure you have bug spray if you keep the windows open
Rare find! Right in the heart of Amsterdam, this accommodation made it incredibly easy to explore the city. The amenities were excellent, the view was pretty, and the stay itself was fantastic. I traveled with my female friends, and we all felt very safe throughout our visit. Would highly recommend!
A fun summer trip with teens. A beautiful original 400-year-old canal house right in front of a canal. Very central location and friendly hosts.
What could be improved: We liked everything but here are some things to watch out for:
TThe stairs are challenging if you have mobility issues. The apartment is on the 3rd floor walk up but since it’s a narrow canal house, the stairs are very small, steep and narrow. We liked the original feel of this and stayed 3 nights so it was manageable. We have 2 teens who didn’t find it a problem, but it would be a challenge for very young families or older folk.
The no refund policy does not provide any flexibility if your travel plans change. We booked over 6 months in advance and tried to cancel when our plans changed but would have forfeited the whole amount that we paid.
There is no cooking allowed.
We were there summer 2024 and a few of the days were very hot. We left the window open which was lovely but we all got badly bitten during the night. Not the fault of anyone, there is no ac so windows stay open.
The owner works at night so we have to be very quiet, not an issue for us but if you have excited kids, it might be hard.
It was an incredible apartment and was great value for money The view and location of the property was amazing, right in the heart and everything is within walking distance
What could be improved: The bedding could’ve been linen rather than silk
Great location, VERY steep stairs - make sure you read the full booking info before booking! Great location, cute lounge room and comfy beds.
What could be improved: Smell coming from the bathroom (is due to the old pipes and sewers near by) but does lessen after using the taps and shower and having an airfreshener.
Very good It was central to all activities we wanted to do.
What could be improved: The stairs in the accommodation was very steep and narrow, I would stay again if I was on the bottom floor
the vibe in the property is nice for the vacation. the vibe in the property
What could be improved: still have a guest living up stairs and the pillows is not comfortable when I’m sleeping.
The property hosted the perfect holiday ending (for me), the perfect transition between holiday phases (for my friend) a The location, space and layout suited us absolutely perfectly.
What could be improved: A Dropbox for the collection of the keys at the property itself would have been preferable for both us and the host considering the unreliability of arrival times surrounding international flights/customs.
Perfectly placed apartment with access to all areas of Amsterdam! Loved it The apartment was clean with tasteful decor and good facilities. Having read some of the reviews I wasn’t expecting such a fitting property and really well located too. A great base to explore Amsterdam…. Oh and comfy beds too!
What could be improved: The stairs are a thing! Yes there are 2.5 flights of very tight and winding stairs but we expected them having read the reviews. Literally was the only slight negative but we got used to them quickly, wouldn’t recommend the property if you have mobility challenges or have a lot of luggage.
Superb it is a lovely apartment for max. 4 person. Its small but enough space for all. When you would experience like people in Amsterdam live - book this Appartement. It is perfekt! You step out of the door and walk about 5 minutes and your in the center.
What could be improved: You can’t lock the door so you have to trust. But everything is safe :).
