First Impressions
Walking up to JoyJoyJoy the Green Palm ecolicious studio in a in historic Canalhouse from 1729 with view on the canals feels like discovering Amsterdam’s best-kept secret. I mean, the name alone tells you this isn’t your typical chain hotel — and honestly, that’s exactly what makes it special. This four-star gem sits right in a genuine 17th-century canalhouse, and you can actually feel the history in those thick walls and creaky wooden floors. The building has this authentic Amsterdam character that you just can’t fake.
Location & Neighborhood
You know what really struck me about the location? It’s on Nieuwe Keizersgracht, which puts you right in Amsterdam City Centre without the tourist chaos of Dam Square. I could walk to the Rijksmuseum in about ten minutes, but the street itself feels surprisingly peaceful — especially for couples (apparently they rate the location 9.4, and I totally get why). The canal views from the room are the real deal too, not some side-alley glimpse you sometimes get with “canal view” promises.
The Studio Experience
The studio setup works brilliantly if you’re planning to stay a few days. There’s a compact kitchenette that’s actually functional — I managed to make proper coffee and even cooked a simple dinner one evening. The eco-friendly touches are thoughtful without being preachy; they’ve got energy-efficient lighting and encourage water conservation, but it never feels like you’re roughing it. The space feels bigger than it probably is, thanks to those tall canalhouse windows that flood everything with natural light. You’ll find everything you need for a comfortable extended stay.
Historic Charm Meets Modern Comfort
Living in a building from 1729 means dealing with some quirks — the stairs are steep (typical Amsterdam), and the floors have that gentle slope that comes with three centuries of settling. But that’s part of the charm, really. The owners have done a smart job updating everything that matters while keeping the soul of the place intact. The heating works perfectly, the Wi-Fi is solid, and the bathroom feels completely modern despite being tucked into this historic shell. It’s the perfect balance of old-world character and contemporary convenience.
Why Guests Love It
After spending several nights here, I understand why this place scores so well with visitors. It’s that rare combination of authentic Amsterdam living and actual comfort — you’re not just staying in the city, you’re living like a local in one of those iconic canalhouses you’ve seen in photos. The eco-conscious approach feels genuine rather than trendy, and the location really can’t be beat if you want to explore on foot. Sure, it’s not going to work if you need a full hotel experience with room service and a concierge, but for independent travelers who want something real? This hits the sweet spot perfectly. The experience here is truly unforgettable.
Amsterdam hotels keep guests near Anne Frank House queues, Jordaan vinyl shops, and vintage markets.

What Our Guests Say
enjoyed our stay quiet location. beautiful outlook onto the canal. sunny aspect might be very hot mid summer
What could be improved: very cosy - not much space but functional. restricted shower drain.
We had a great trip Great location within 1/2 hour walk of the station and the main tourist spots in central Amsterdam, plus a Metro stop within a few hundred yards. Nice, peaceful location. We didn't spend too much time at the property tbh - we were out enjoying the sights of the city.
What could be improved: It was a bit small - fine for a few nights, but I couldn't live there for an extended period.
Great spot in a quiet corner of Amsterdam, still close to everything with a great canal view. Location was beautiful. Historic painted wall behind bed. Host sent helpful information and recommendations, and welcomed us with a bottle of wine.
Awesome! Inspiring for life and future travel advatures. All details inspire on amazing vacation! The canal view is 10 from 10!
What could be improved: The shower drains poorly, but it's easy to fix
Amazing! The location is absolutely perfect! The place is lovley, not noisy at all.
What could be improved: The only thing I would say is that, if you are British then either take your own towels or buy one out there. The towels provided were like microfiber dusters and didn't dry you. There wasn't anywhere to dry the towels so they were wet for the whole stay which wasn't pleasant. And was very cold some mornings. Apart from those two things the place is excellent.
Canal ambience with a spash of tropics The place us very cute, quaint and appropriately stylish with the canal view
What could be improved: All was great
Location location location! Superb view, great location in a quiet neighbourhood, yet close to cultural activities and fab restaurants in a slice of historic Amsterdam.
What could be improved: Could have been more/better pillows.
Superb Great location very clean
What could be improved: Very small
Amsterdam canal charm. The canal side location is wonderful with easy, walking access all around the city. Hubert will pick you up and drop you off right at your door which is very nice. Overall it was a charming getaway in old Amsterdam. I highly recommend this little flat for those who enjoy the feeling of staying in a lovely flat - borrowed from a friend.
