First Impressions
Walking up to Jan Luyken Amsterdam on a quiet tree-lined street, you’d almost miss it if you weren’t looking — and honestly, that’s part of its charm. This four-star boutique hotel sits tucked away in Oud Zuid, occupying what feels like a series of connected Amsterdam townhouses rather than some massive hotel complex. The entrance is understated in that perfectly Dutch way, with clean lines and just enough character to hint at what’s waiting inside.
Location & Neighborhood
You know what’s great about this spot? You’re literally a two-minute walk from the Rijksmuseum and Van Gogh Museum, but once you turn down Jan Luykenstraat, the tourist crowds just… disappear. Amsterdam‘s museum quarter can get pretty hectic during the day, but this little street feels residential and calm. I mean, you’ve got Vondelpark right there too — perfect for morning runs or just escaping the city buzz for a bit.
The Rooms
The room I stayed in had this warm, minimalist vibe that felt distinctly Amsterdam without trying too hard. Large windows (thank goodness — some canal house hotels can feel pretty dark), clean wooden floors, and this sort of understated elegance that grows on you. The bathroom was compact but well-designed — they clearly thought about how to use every inch of space. What I really appreciated was the attention to details like proper lighting for reading and outlets that actually work with modern devices.
Dining & Amenities
The hotel’s restaurant, Restaurant Vermeer, is actually something special — they’ve got a Michelin star, which honestly surprised me given how low-key the whole place feels. Even if you don’t spring for the full dining experience, their breakfast setup is solid without being overwhelming. There’s also a cozy bar area where locals actually show up, which tells you something about how they’ve integrated into the neighborhood rather than just existing as a tourist bubble.
Why Guests Love It
Look, Jan Luyken Amsterdam works because it doesn’t try to be everything to everyone. It’s got that boutique hotel intimacy — only 62 rooms, so you’re not fighting crowds in the elevator — but with all the services you’d expect from a larger property. The staff genuinely seems to know the area well, giving recommendations that go beyond the obvious tourist spots. Plus, with an 8.9 rating, it’s clear that other guests are picking up on the same thoughtful details that caught my attention during my stay.
Amsterdam hotels keep travelers close to cycling routes, floating flower markets, and tram lines to hidden gems.

What Our Guests Say
Exceptional I loved the location and the building, and the room
Was very cozy and clean. The fact that there are complementary snack and great drink available all through the day is amazing, and definitely adds a lot to the stay. The breakfast was really very nice
What could be improved: The only thing I didN’t like were the pillows! I would definitely invest in having some lower / softer ones too
We were very happy with our stay and would recommend to others Location is great - easy walk to museums, park, and the tram. Quiet street. The lobby and food area is wonderful, a great spot to hang out and we so appreciated the free drinks and snacks.
Although the room was small, it was designed well to include a small closet, a bench along with small table and chairs.
What could be improved: The bathroom could have been a little nicer

We loved our stay at Jan Luyken. Great location, complimentary snacks and drinks, amazing breakfast! We loved the complimentary snacks and drinks! The location was amazing, great for all things tourist-y. The room was nice and comfortable. Breakfast was super and coffee tasted great.
Excellent location for a weekend getaway to explore the city Excellent location, friendly staff. Appreciated the "townhouse" vibe, with snacks, drinks, and a healthy breakfast. Rooms are small, but cosy. Various art pieces and bowls of candy everywhere.
What could be improved: The bathroom became a bit moist after the shower, making the towels difficult to dry. Some better lighting for the room would have been nice.
Would definately stay again! Loved it from start to finish.
Loved the town house vibe

Charming Hotel Beautiful property, located 10 mins from the Canals and well connected.
Super peacful property, with a unique charm. It is a bit cozy for heavy travellers as the rooms are small. However the atmosphere and vibes are spectacular. Great place to get lost in a book, or just take a week to rejuvenate in the city.
