First Impressions
The InterContinental Amstel Amsterdam by IHG sits right on the Amstel River like it owns the place — and honestly, it kind of does. This five-star grand dame has been welcoming guests since 1867, and you feel that history the moment you walk through those polished doors. The lobby’s all marble columns and crystal chandeliers, but not in a stuffy way — more like stepping into old-world Amsterdam luxury that actually works.
Prime River Location
Here’s what I love about the location — you’re technically in Amsterdam City Centre, but tucked away from the tourist chaos around Dam Square. The hotel faces the Amstel River directly, so many rooms get those postcard views of boats drifting by and the Magere Brug drawbridge opening for river traffic. You can actually walk to the Hermitage Museum in about three minutes, and the opera house is right next door if that’s your thing.
The Rooms Experience
The room I stayed in had floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the water — honestly, I spent way too much time just watching the canal boats navigate the morning mist. Everything feels substantial here, from the heavy curtains to the marble bathrooms with those deep soaking tubs. The beds are properly comfortable, not just hotel-firm, and the linens have that crisp luxury feel you expect at this level.
Dining and Amenities
La Rive is their Michelin-starred restaurant, and while it’s pricey, the French cuisine with those river views makes for a memorable evening — I mean, you’re already splurging on the hotel, right? The Club InterContinental lounge on the sixth floor offers a more casual option with surprisingly good evening canapés. There’s also a proper fitness center and spa facilities, though the real luxury here is just soaking in that riverside atmosphere.
Why Guests Love It
What sets this place apart is how it balances grandeur with genuine comfort — you get the opulent lobby and crystal chandeliers, but your room feels like an elegant home rather than a museum. The staff knows Amsterdam inside and out, so they’ll steer you toward the good local spots beyond the obvious tourist traps. And there’s something magical about having morning coffee while watching the city wake up along the river — it’s the kind of Amsterdam experience you can’t get from those canal-side boutique hotels in the crowded Jordaan district.

What Our Guests Say
We were welcomed to the hotel by bright and happy staff. After the initial surprise of how beautiful the hotel was, we w Absolutely everything! It was a stunningly beautiful hotel with a perfect location sitting on one of the major canals. What’s not to like !
It was a pleasant stay in such an elegant hotel. The hotel is grand and high value. It felt like a palace. People in and out were dressed quite formal. The room was clean and tidy. Very nice service. We felt that the hotel is more suit for holding weddings, or some other leisure.
The hotel is very good. Everything matches everything is perfect. The only problem there is no Internet and it is also h The hotel itself is pretty good. It’s very beautiful. It’s kind of like old style. There are a few problems that our beds were a bit wet and that there is no Internet in there and it’s hard to get because usually like hotels actually have Internet like their own, so everything was very good. The room is very clean. The price is pretty good. I mean it’s just you know it matches the price and the so everything was perfect. We enjoyed the stay
What could be improved: There is no Internet and the beds are a bit wet
Superb Staff during breakfast and Diner
What could be improved: no phone charger in room
Relaxing and luxurious Glorious place, great spa, beautiful bathrooms, good breakfast, friendly staff
What could be improved: A few niggles:
-very slightly understaffed?
-steam bath in the spa needs some essential oils or maintenance?
-power points should be on both sides of the bed?
-mixup with our bag when we arrived, 20 minute wait for it to be brought up?
-inclusive breakfasts should be available to be brought to the room for a tray charge?
We had a great stay and we will certainly look back at the experience with fond memories. Friendly staff and excellent service.
What could be improved: The Chromecast service in the room did not work, but this was true for the whole hotel due to a problem with the service provider.
Very good It was a nice day, clean comfortable room, good area, we only face a problem with the sink.
The room has a very nice view
The lady on the front desk was very welcoming and friendly and showed us a city map. It was very helpful
What could be improved: 1. The sink problem was annoying.
2. Ticket affording. they told us they can book us tickets for a museum. we asked and reminded them many times but they didn't. it was a little bit sad because we depended on what they say.
3. Yes it was nice stay but the overall price was a bit high considering 2 nights + a winter season wasn’t crowded with tourists.
Outstanding Beautiful hotel - piece of art.
What could be improved: N/A
Superb We loved the rooms, the reception staff was wonderful, and the property was beautiful.
What could be improved: We tried getting spa treatments in advance but no one replied. There was no one down at the spa when we went down to book directly and the facility didn’t seem up to standards. Other then that it was a wonderful stay.
Amazing staff who were kind and helpful throughout our stay! The property is beautiful!!
What could be improved: The location was a little difficult for us, but access to the tram was helpful.
