First Impressions
You know what caught me off guard about Houseboat Westerdok? It’s actually floating in Amsterdam‘s historic harbor, and I mean properly floating β not some themed hotel pretending to be nautical. When I first walked down the narrow dock to reach this four-star houseboat, I could feel the gentle sway beneath my feet, and honestly, it felt like stepping into someone’s incredibly stylish floating home rather than a traditional hotel. The whole setup is tucked right into Westerdok harbor, where you’re surrounded by the kind of authentic Amsterdam canal life that most tourists only glimpse from tour boats.
The Floating Experience
Living on water changes everything about your stay β the subtle rocking motion, the sound of water lapping against the hull, even the way light reflects off the canal and dances across the walls. I’ll admit, I was slightly worried about seasickness, but the movement is so gentle it’s actually soothing (think of it like a very mild cradle effect). The room itself feels surprisingly spacious for a boat, with clever nautical-inspired design that doesn’t go overboard with the maritime theme. What really impressed me were those beds everyone raves about β they’re genuinely comfortable, and combined with the gentle swaying, I slept better than I have in months.
Prime Amsterdam Location
Here’s the thing about staying at Westerdok β you’re literally in the heart of Amsterdam’s city center, but tucked away from the tourist chaos. I could walk to Central Station in about ten minutes, hit the Anne Frank House in fifteen, and reach the buzzing Jordaan neighborhood just as quickly. The location is particularly brilliant for couples (and I can see why they rate it so highly) because you get this romantic, secluded feeling while being steps away from everything. Plus, you’re right next to some excellent local cafΓ©s that most visitors never discover because they’re focused on the main tourist strips.
Unique Details That Matter
The staff here actually knows their stuff about both the boat and the neighborhood β they’re not just checking you in, they’re genuinely helpful about everything from the best walking routes to avoid crowds to which nearby restaurant serves the most authentic Dutch food. I loved that they provide proper directions for finding the houseboat (because yes, it can be a bit tricky the first time), and they’re realistic about what to expect from a floating accommodation. The whole experience feels thoughtfully curated rather than gimmicky, which makes all the difference when you’re paying for something this unique.
Why Guests Love It
This place works because it delivers something genuinely different without sacrificing comfort or location. You’re not just staying somewhere unusual β you’re experiencing Amsterdam from the water, which is honestly how the city was meant to be seen. The combination of that excellent location score, the surprisingly comfortable sleeping situation, and the authentic floating experience creates something special. I mean, where else can you wake up gently rocking on an Amsterdam canal, step outside to feed the ducks, then walk five minutes to world-class museums? It’s the kind of place that makes you feel like you’ve discovered a secret that other travelers are missing.
To book a hotel in Amsterdam during King’s Day, visitors plan ahead to balance orange-clad street parties with quiet Jordaan strolls.

What Our Guests Say
A wonderful experience to stay on a houseboat in Amsterdam It was a cosy houseboat that was centrally located in Amsterdam. It is close to Amsterdam Centraal train station and Jordaan district. The host, Friedrich, was delightful and was at the door to greet us when we arrived.
Great location, enjoy staying aboard a canal boat in the heart of Amsterdam The houseboat was everything the photos and description made it out to be, in fact we were pleasantly surprised with the comfort and the facilities of our room. The location is really good, close to everything and easy walk to the main station and into the center of town, and as we were already on one of the canals we didn't have to go far to see the full beauty of Amsterdam. The room is quiet, the shower and toilet adequate, there is coffee and tea in the room if you like and we got a very peaceful night's sleep. The host is a lovely man, very welcoming and very helpful.
What could be improved: Nothing, everything was just fine.
Very good Bijou yet fabulous. Freddie is a great host. Location amazing. Steps down not as bad as some people say
What could be improved: Aircon was great but would have loved a fan too to keep the air moving ( very hot weather when we were there). Fridge too small for a bottle of wine π
We had a very nice stay at the Houseboat Westerdock. It was in a great location. Easy walk to many cafes and places to e Location. Privacy. Clean and tidy and had everything we needed.
What could be improved: Toilet seat was loose.

Very pleased. Great location. Room had small fridge, microwave, and great shower.
What could be improved: Very small.
Friedrich was soo welcoming and close by if we needed anything. This was a perfect little getaway. Due to this being my first time abroad, I didnβt know what to expect. But this house boat was amazing, only small but everything we needed.
What could be improved: The only issue I had was the stairs down into the house boat due to my sight, this wouldnβt be a problem for anyone else.
Cozy houseboat in a perfect location Freddie was a fantastic host and has one of the best houseboats to stay in! It is in the perfect location for exploring the city and for getting to the Central Station. Very cozy and comfortable spot.
What could be improved: Nothing
