First Impressions
When I first spotted Houseboat Studio Sooki moored along IJsbaanpad, I honestly wasn’t sure what to expect β I mean, how many times do you get to sleep on the water in the middle of a major city? This four-star floating gem sits in Amsterdam’s upscale Oud Zuid district, and let me tell you, it’s nothing like those cramped canal boats you see packed with tourists. The moment you step aboard, there’s this immediate sense of calm that washes over you, which is pretty remarkable considering you’re still very much in Amsterdam.
The Floating Experience
The room itself is cleverly designed β it’s a studio layout that maximizes every inch of space without feeling cramped. You’ve got large windows that frame the water perfectly, and honestly, waking up to gentle boat movement is surprisingly soothing (I was worried about seasickness, but it’s barely noticeable). The interior feels modern and clean, with thoughtful touches that remind you you’re somewhere special. What really struck me was how quiet it gets at night β you’d think being on water would mean more noise, but it’s actually the opposite.
Location & Neighborhood
Oud Zuid is one of those neighborhoods that locals love but tourists often miss, and staying here gives you a real insider’s perspective. You’re close enough to Vondelpark for morning runs, and the Museum Quarter is just a short bike ride away. The area around IJsbaanpad has this residential feel β you’ll see people walking their dogs and heading to work, which makes you feel less like a tourist and more like a temporary local. Plus, couples seem to really appreciate the romantic setting (I can see why the location scores so well with pairs).
Practical Considerations
Getting to the houseboat is straightforward once you know where you’re going, though I’d recommend downloading offline maps just in case. There’s decent parking nearby if you’re driving, but honestly, Amsterdam is best explored on foot or by bike anyway. The host provides clear instructions for finding the boat, which is helpful since it’s not exactly like checking into a traditional hotel lobby. One thing to note β if you’re traveling with heavy luggage, the gangway requires a bit of careful maneuvering, but nothing too challenging.
Why Guests Love It
What makes Houseboat Studio Sooki special isn’t just the novelty of sleeping on water β it’s the combination of unique accommodation with genuine comfort and style. You get that “only in Amsterdam” experience without sacrificing modern amenities or a good night’s sleep. The location consistently earns high marks because it strikes that perfect balance between being central enough to reach everything easily, yet tucked away enough to feel like your own private retreat. After staying here, regular hotel rooms honestly feel a bit boring β there’s something about falling asleep to the gentle lapping of water that makes the whole Amsterdam experience more memorable.
Best hotels in Amsterdam blend canal-view balconies, design interiors, and farm-to-table breakfast spreads.

What Our Guests Say
Exceptional Lovely quirky space with everything you need for a comfortable stay.
Great detailed information from the host about how to find the property which was really helpful.
Easy to get into central Amsterdam via the tram and metro.
Lots to explore in the local area too, bikes were available to use but we chose to walk. Loved it π₯°
A wonderful spot on the water, quiet, but close to city, with wonderful amenities. Nice spot on the water, well behaved waterfowl, super comfy bed and perfect, tiny kitchen. The free, loaner bikes were fabulous; an easy ride into and out of town, close to good restaurants and lovely Vondelpark!
What could be improved: Bit stuffy, no cross breeze unless door propped open.
Perfect studio accommodation that being on a houseboat gives a real taste of Amsterdam Great studio accommodation on houseboat. The bed was superbly comfortable and the shower was wonderful. The kitchenette is great with kettle, coffee maker, fridge etc. Perfect for a solo traveler and for a short stay. Communication with the owners was excellent. I loved it here. Itβs convenient for public transport to the centre of Amsterdam and all the key tourist attractions.
What could be improved: The only cups/mugs are for espresso! Very small. I would have liked a mug for my tea!
Exceptional Amazing atmosphere - ducks swimmimg around when I had breskfast on the terrace!
