First Impressions
You know what hits you first about houseboat Rose? It’s not just that you’re staying on the water β plenty of places claim waterfront views. Here, you’re literally floating on the Amstel River, and I mean properly floating. The gentle sway becomes this oddly comforting rhythm that you notice most when you’re trying to fall asleep (in the best way possible). This four-star houseboat sits right in Amsterdam City Centre, so you’re basically docked in the heart of everything while feeling completely removed from the tourist chaos.
The Floating Experience
Living on water changes your whole perspective of the city, honestly. From your room, you watch the canal boats drift by during the day, and at night the reflections of Amsterdam’s lights dance on the water right outside your windows. The houseboat itself feels more like a boutique hotel than some quirky novelty β the design is clean and modern, with large windows that make the most of those water views. What I really appreciated was how quiet it gets once the day boats stop running around 6 PM.
Location on the Amstel
Being moored on Amstel 171G puts you in this sweet spot where you can walk to Rembrandtplein in about five minutes, but you’re not dealing with the noise and crowds of the main tourist strips. The Hermitage Museum is practically next door, and you’re close enough to the Jordaan that you can easily explore those picturesque side canals. I found myself taking different walking routes each day just because everything felt so accessible from the water.
Practical Floating Life
Now, let’s talk about the practical stuff because staying on a houseboat isn’t exactly like your typical hotel experience. There’s no restaurant on board, but honestly, you’re in Amsterdam β some of the city’s best cafΓ©s and eateries are within a few blocks. The Wi-Fi works perfectly fine, and the heating system keeps things cozy even when it’s chilly outside. One thing to note: if you’re a super light sleeper, you might hear the occasional late-night boat passing by, though most guests seem to find the water sounds soothing rather than disruptive.
Why Guests Love It
This place scores 8.9 for good reason β it delivers something genuinely different without sacrificing comfort. You’re not just visiting Amsterdam; you’re living like a local would if they happened to own a beautiful houseboat in the city center. The staff clearly knows their guests are looking for something special, and they deliver that without making it feel gimmicky. Whether you’re watching the sunrise over the Amstel or having your morning coffee while canal boats start their daily routes, houseboat Rose offers this perfect balance of unique experience and actual comfort that’s harder to find than you’d think.
Savvy travelers reserve a hotel in Amsterdam before autumn brings golden leaves, pumpkin soups, and cozy canal reflections.

What Our Guests Say
Lovely stay and very much enjoyed Location and being in a houseboat on the canals
What could be improved: Stairs down to living area were a bit steep
Exceptional Cute and quirky and lots of fun.
Very clean. We got a good night's sleep and the location is fabulous.
BAKHUYS bakery on Sarphatistraas, fantastic for early coffee. Loved our stay at "Houseboat Rose πΉ "
What could be improved: We were a bit challenged by the loo. VERY tiny cramped space. A real challenge for our 2 tall men.
Exceptional The boat was a lot more spacious than we were expecting and we had a very comfortable stay. Amsterdam was experiencing a heatwave but bedrooms stayed cool enough by leaving the doors to the hallway ajar. Great restaurant on the corner just by the boat.
Beautiful boat great location had the best stay Amazing location
Superb Great spot and facilities. Strong shower, comfy beds
Lovely break Great locationβ¦comfy beds
What could be improved: Nothing
A special place to stay. The location is excellent, and the boat is comfy and spacious. A special place to stay.
What could be improved: If you have mobility issues then steps down to the loving quarters are tricky, and the toilet is compact, being a larger person I had to pee with the door open, but both these factors were clearly explained on website, so I didn't have a problem with it.
Fantastic location The location was fantastic. The property itself was great. Within walking distance to a number of supermarkets, bars and laundromat.
What could be improved: The stairs inside the boat were steep and could do with another handrail. The toilet was very cramped and virtually impossible to manoeuvre to redress without head butting the wall.
Very good Great location, easy access to the Metro and trams. Local Supermarket very close.
Our host was great and gave us loads of information which was extremely helpful. Even though check in was at 3pm we were able to drop our bags off before hand which was great, the same applied for check out.
Accommodation was very comfortable and ticked all the boxes.
