First Impressions
When I first spotted Houseboat Reussi moored along Kalkmarkt, I’ll admit I did a double-take. You know what? I’ve stayed in plenty of canal-side hotels in Amsterdam, but actually sleeping on the water itself — that’s something entirely different. This four-star floating gem sits right in the heart of the city center, and honestly, the location couldn’t be more perfect if you tried. The moment you step aboard, there’s this gentle rocking motion that immediately tells you this isn’t your typical hotel experience.
The Floating Experience
Living on a houseboat, even temporarily, gives you this unique perspective of Amsterdam that most tourists never get. The room I stayed in had these large windows that basically put you at water level — I mean, you’re literally watching the canal life unfold right outside your window. Duck families paddle by in the morning, and you get this front-row seat to how the city wakes up along the waterways. The gentle movement of the boat is actually quite soothing once you get used to it, though I’d mention it might take a night or two if you’re not used to being on the water.
Location Perfection
Here’s the thing about staying right on Kalkmarkt — you’re essentially in the beating heart of Amsterdam’s city center, but with this peaceful water buffer that keeps you just slightly removed from the street-level chaos. I could walk to Dam Square in about five minutes, and the Red Light District is practically around the corner (though thankfully, the boat’s position keeps you away from the late-night noise). The Anne Frank House, Jordaan neighborhood, and all those postcard-perfect canal views are right there. Plus, there’s parking nearby if you’re brave enough to drive in Amsterdam, though honestly, you won’t need a car from this spot.
Onboard Comfort
The interior surprised me — it’s more spacious than you’d expect from the outside, and they’ve really maximized every inch without making it feel cramped. The design strikes this nice balance between nautical charm and modern comfort, so you get the houseboat experience without sacrificing the amenities you’d want from a four-star stay. The bathroom was compact but well-designed (as you’d expect on a boat), and everything felt sturdy and well-maintained. I particularly appreciated how they’ve soundproofed things — you hear the gentle water sounds but not much else from neighboring boats or the street.
Why Guests Love It
Look, couples absolutely adore this place, and I can see why — there’s something inherently romantic about falling asleep to the gentle lapping of canal water against the hull. It’s intimate in a way that regular hotels just can’t match, and the novelty factor never really wears off during your stay. The location score speaks for itself — you literally cannot get more central than this in Amsterdam. For travelers who want something memorable beyond just a place to sleep, Houseboat Reussi delivers this authentic Amsterdam experience that you’ll actually remember years later. Just don’t expect a massive restaurant or spa facilities — this is about the unique experience of living on Amsterdam’s famous canals, and honestly, that’s more than enough.
Hotel in Amsterdam reservations surge before tulip season, so smart travelers lock in houseboat views months ahead.

What Our Guests Say
What could be improved: Nichts, es war alles perfekt!
