First Impressions
When I first spotted the HouseBoat next to AMSTEL, I honestly wasn’t sure what to expect — I mean, how many times do you get to sleep on the water in the middle of a city? This four-star floating gem sits right along Mauritskade in Amsterdam‘s Oost district, and it’s one of those places that makes you do a double-take as you walk up. The whole setup feels like someone took the best parts of canal living and turned it into an actual hotel experience.
Location & Neighborhood
What’s brilliant about this spot is that you’re in Oost, which locals know is way more authentic than the tourist-packed center, but you’re still ridiculously close to everything that matters. The Amstel River flows right past your window, and honestly, watching the morning light hit the water while sipping coffee became my daily ritual. You can walk to the city center in about 20 minutes, but there’s also great public transport nearby if you’re feeling lazy.
The Floating Experience
Living on a houseboat is different — you feel the gentle movement of the water, especially when larger boats pass by. Some people might find this unsettling, but I actually loved it; there’s something incredibly soothing about that slight rocking motion. The room itself is cleverly designed to maximize space without feeling cramped, and the windows offer these amazing water-level views that you simply can’t get anywhere else in Amsterdam.
Amenities & Comfort
The attention to detail here really impressed me. Everything feels thoughtfully planned, from the compact but fully functional kitchen area to the cozy seating spaces that make the most of the boat’s layout. You know what surprised me? How quiet it actually is at night — the water seems to buffer city noise in this really pleasant way. The staff clearly knows their stuff too; they’re always ready with local recommendations that go way beyond the typical tourist traps.
Why Guests Love It
This place works because it offers something genuinely unique without sacrificing comfort or convenience. The 9.1 rating makes perfect sense when you experience it firsthand — it’s not trying to be everything to everyone, but what it does, it does exceptionally well. Whether you’re looking for a romantic getaway or just want to experience Amsterdam from a completely different perspective, staying on the water adds this layer of magic to your trip that regular hotels simply can’t match.

What Our Guests Say
Enjoy waking up on the water in a houseboat next to the Amstel river! Close to De Pijp, Albert Cuyp We loved the experience of staying on a houseboat in Amsterdam. We rented bikes for the entire week which made it very easy to explore the city. My daughter enjoyed feeding the ducks from the houseboat window. My kids slept in the tiny-yet-cozy bunk room and my husband and I had the large bedroom at the end of the boat. We really appreciated the large living area with dining table, the outdoor seating on the deck next to the Amstel river, and the large closet in the hallway for storing clothes. This houseboat has everything you need - kitchenette with small refrigerator, coffee machine, hair dryer. Based on the description of the property and the amenities, I was slightly hesitant but once we arrived I was very pleased. We booked the entire boat with occupancy for 4 people which included access to the entire boat and use of the kitchenette (but not the locked kitchen cabinet for an additional fee, nor the use of the living room wallbed for an addiitional fee. Hope that info helps for others who are considering.) The De Pijp neighborhood and the Albert Cuyp market is a short 10 min walk away where you can buy anything you need. We purchased groceries at Albert Heijn on Weesperpoort (10 min walk). We also enjoyed delicious pastries from Bakhuys Amsterdam, pizza at Lou Lou, dinner at De Ysbreejer, pastel de nata at Mr Nata, all within walking distance. We took the kids to Oosterpark a couple times also - great playgrounds and green space. We'd definitely stay here again. Loved waking up on the water. We experienced some minor technical issues with the heating and power during our stay but the owner was super responsive and quick to resolve, no complaints once we got everything sorted out.
What could be improved: No complaints!
Superb Houseboat Beautiful houseboat, lovely location, clean facilities, great host
What could be improved: We chose not to use kitchen but had use of coffee machine, no cutlery though, it would have been nice to have cutlery for takeaways and spoons for coffee
Exceptional Great location, 30 minutes away by foot from most of the places which are must have visit in Amsterdam.
An authentic Amsterdam experience The location is 15 minutes to just about everything with great non-touristy restaurants, bakeries, and a grocery just around the corner. Amstel Hotel is just across the bridge and has a lovely high tea. The massage bed was a bonus! Very spacious and comfortable, even in the dead of winter we were warm once we understood the excellent heating system. The bathroom is spacious and the shower was roomy with lots of hot water. Big central closet in the hallway with lots of shelves and two hanging areas, which helped keep the rooms tidy. Lots of windows and light with very effective blackout blinds. Two TVs to keep the family happy on a rainy day. Very clean and I believe it was recently painted. The kitchen has a small set of dishes, set of silverware, a few glasses, microwave oven, and spacious clean refrigerator. Having stayed on boats before, this one was quieter and stiller than most, as long as you are not a light sleeper you will have an excellent night's rest. The outdoor decks are amazing and furnished well, and I bet they are beautiful in the spring as there are plants everywhere (we were there over New Years). It was perfect for our family of 2 adults and 2 teens and could even hold an additional 2 people for an additional fee by using a murphy bed in the main living room. Don't hesitate to visit Amsterdam in the winter, bundle up and enjoy the city's light festival and other holiday festivities and know you'll have a cozy place to go home to every night!
What could be improved: It's great! There is NOTHING we didn't like, just some things to note that aren't bad, just different. There is a very high end bidet (no paper can go in the system) which is only a minor issue if you are not familiar with them. Also, at check in there is an optional "kitchen setup" fee that was a little confusing since kitchen doesn't have the normal "additional charge" tag that booking.com uses. But in the end we had what we needed and expected without paying the fee. There is a great pull out for Uber drivers, but plan to be out front when they get close since it can be easy for them to miss it and they have limited places to stop once they pass the boat. The only thing on my wish list would be a few blankets we could use to sit outside on a sunny, but chilly day.
Very comfortable and clean. Nice accommodations from the host. Extremely comfortable and nice. The living room has a door so 2 couples can stay here comfortably. Huge sofa perfect for lounging and naps. Outdoor space offers lots of seating options and the floating dock offers a waterside seat unlike anything else in the city. Refrigerator is decent size.
What could be improved: Many ride share and delivery drivers do not know about the parking areas on the curb in front of the gate so it is difficult to connect sometimes.
We really enjoyed the experience of staying on a houseboat. It was clean and comfortable. Its location near transportati It was neat staying on a houseboat. The location to transportation and groceries were also excellent
What could be improved: It was a little cold at times and we had no access to plates or silverware.
Exceptional Very well placed, metro station near by, city centre/airport easy to reach. Very well equiped.
What could be improved: No cutlery. But could do without.
Very comfortable, great location. The houseboat was lovely and in a great location, surprisingly quiet at night. The beds were comfortable, there was enough room for the 4 of us. Very nice to have a fridge and table to eat breakfast at. In summer it would be great to sit out on the pontoon in the sun. It was really easy to find and access based on the messages sent to us.
What could be improved: The bumping of the boat into the dock was a bit loud and unexpected sometimes, but you actually didn't notice it at night.
Brilliant and charming with excellent communication with the host. Charming accommodation, excellent host communication and good location for what we wanted to do in the city. The beds are super comfy and the space is just what we needed. We absolutely loved the quirkiness of the pontoon and waking up to the scenery and the river birds that come to visit. Overall, an excellent stay.
What could be improved: Everything was spot on.
Exceptional great location
