First Impressions
Walking down the Prinsengracht looking for Houseboat Bonnie, I almost missed it — which is exactly the point. This isn’t some flashy hotel entrance; it’s an actual floating home moored along one of Amsterdam’s most beautiful canals. The first thing that hits you is how quiet it feels despite being right in the city center. You’re literally staying on the water, and there’s something genuinely magical about stepping aboard your own private piece of canal life.
The Floating Experience
Honestly, I wasn’t sure what to expect from a four-star houseboat, but this place surprised me. The room feels more like a well-designed studio apartment than a typical hotel setup — there’s actual character here, with porthole windows and that gentle rocking motion that either puts you right to sleep or keeps you awake (thankfully, it was the former for me). The space is cleverly designed too, making the most of every inch without feeling cramped.
Canal-Side Living
What I love about staying here is that you’re not just visiting Amsterdam — you’re actually living like a local for a few days. The Prinsengracht location means you can walk to the Anne Frank House in about five minutes, and the Jordaan neighborhood is right there with all its cozy cafés and vintage shops. But here’s what the guidebooks don’t tell you: early morning on the canal is absolutely perfect, before the tour boats start up and when you can actually hear the water lapping against the hull.
Practical Considerations
Now, let’s be real about the logistics — this isn’t for everyone. If you’re someone who needs a full hotel experience with room service and a restaurant downstairs, this might not be your thing. But if you want something different and don’t mind the occasional creak of the boat or figuring out your own breakfast, it’s honestly one of the most unique places I’ve stayed. The parking situation is typical Amsterdam chaos, so I’d skip the car entirely and just walk or bike everywhere.
Why Guests Love It
That 9.5 rating makes complete sense once you’ve stayed here. It’s not trying to be a traditional hotel, and that’s exactly what makes it special. You wake up to canal views, fall asleep to the gentle movement of the water, and get to experience Amsterdam from a perspective that most tourists never see. Sure, it’s a bit quirky and definitely not conventional, but sometimes that’s exactly what you’re looking for. I mean, how many people can say they’ve actually lived on an Amsterdam canal, even if it’s just for a weekend?
Amsterdam’s apartments welcome long stays with rooftop terraces, boat rental access, and tram links to hidden courtyards.

What Our Guests Say
Nothing better than staying on a houseboat on the canals of Amsterdam! Great location and such a great place to stay while visiting Amsterdam! Rutger and Joan were amazing to work with, super helpful!
What could be improved: Nothing
Go for an authentic Amsterdam holiday. We felt like we had the best authentic experience in Amsterdam. It was a lot of fun seeing all the boats go by. The location is very central. We were only 1/2 block from the Ann Frank house. For greater distances Ubur was able to find us. We walked to most sites. The boat is clean and had some supplies.
Beautiful and unique stay in Amsterdam! Outstanding location and such an adorable houseboat! We loved sitting on the patio and watching the boats go by. Also, the WiFi was strong and good for working remote. We'd love to come back here again!
What could be improved: We visited during a heatwave so it was a bit hot -- providing a fan may be helpful for future summer guests! The noise from the local bar didn't bother us since we use a white noise machine app on our phones.
A perfect place for a unique experience in Amsterdam. The property was exceptionally clean and comfortable. The location was perfect and the experience memorable.
What could be improved: The multi-use kitchen/bathroom sink made it hard to get ready in the morning as there isn’t a mirror above it.
Such a lovely stay in a beautiful spot. Would definitely stay again. Lovely little place on the canal and very close to everything. Very scenic and it was nicely decorated and equipped with everything we needed. The owners were so friendly and very helpful and prompt in answering my questions. Perfect stay!
Incredible houseboat Amazing location and surprisingly spacious.
What could be improved: It could be slightly noisy at night. Not an issue for me but if you’re a light sleeper you might want to use ear plugs or headphones
Staying at Bonnie was a wonderful experience and made our stay memorable. The location couldn’t be better.
What could be improved: There wasn’t much we didn’t like. If I had to say anything…it would be nice to have very tiny side tables next to the bed.
Exceptional We loved everything from the House Boat, how comfortable it was to the location, not too busy but lively enough not to be too quiet, which is exactly what we wanted inAmsterdam, it was a good location. It was also very dog friendly, which was a huge win for us! We are absolutely booking again!
What could be improved: There was nothing we didnt like.
Exceptional WOW! great to be on Water and living the dream
Great property, location, and experience. Would recommend to anybody wanting the picturesque Amsterdam experience. Super cozy and cute. A very neat experience on the canal. Great location and the hosts were great.
What could be improved: In colder weather, the houseboat can be a bit chilly.
The heat was on, but we were unable to control the temperature/thermostat.
