First Impressions

You know what caught me off guard about Houseboat Ark van Amstel? It’s actually floating — I mean, obviously it’s a houseboat, but there’s something surreal about checking into a hotel that gently rocks with the water. Located on Weesperzijde in Amsterdam’s Oost district, this four-star floating gem sits right on the Amstel River, and honestly, the location alone makes it worth considering. The whole setup feels like you’re staying on someone’s really cool private yacht, except with proper hotel amenities.

The Floating Experience

The room I stayed in had these massive windows that basically put you at water level — you’re watching boats drift by while you’re having your morning coffee. It’s weirdly peaceful, actually. The gentle movement takes some getting used to (don’t worry, it’s subtle), but there’s something oddly soothing about falling asleep to the soft lapping of water against the hull. The interior design strikes this nice balance between nautical charm and modern comfort — think clean lines with maritime touches, not cheesy anchor decorations everywhere.

Location & Getting Around

Here’s what I really appreciated about the Oost location — you’re close enough to the action but away from the tourist chaos of the city center. The Waterlooplein metro station is about a 10-minute walk, which gets you anywhere in Amsterdam pretty quickly. Plus, being right on the river means you can actually take water taxis or canal boats directly from the hotel, which feels pretty special. The neighborhood itself has this authentic Amsterdam vibe — local cafés, tree-lined streets, and way fewer crowds taking selfies every five meters.

Practical Considerations

The parking situation is actually better than most Amsterdam hotels — there’s a dedicated spot nearby, which is honestly a miracle in this city. The staff really knows their stuff about getting around the city, and they’re genuinely helpful with recommendations that go beyond the typical tourist traps. One thing to keep in mind: if you’re someone who gets seasick easily, maybe ask about it when booking. The movement is minimal, but it’s there. Also, the sound carries differently on water, so you might hear boats passing by early in the morning — though I found it charming rather than annoying.

Why Guests Love It

What makes this place special isn’t just the novelty of sleeping on water — it’s the whole experience of staying somewhere genuinely unique in Amsterdam. Couples seem to really love it here, and I can see why. There’s something romantic about watching the city lights reflect on the water from your window, or having a drink on deck while boats drift past. It’s one of those places where you feel like you’re getting an insider’s view of Amsterdam, literally from the water up. The combination of the peaceful river setting and easy access to the city creates this perfect balance that’s hard to find in most urban hotels.

To book a hotel in Amsterdam during King’s Day, visitors plan ahead to balance orange-clad street parties with quiet Jordaan strolls.

Very unique Dutch stay This was a very unique stay in Amsterdam. We really enjoyed having a coffee and watching all the boats moving up and down the river. The location was a perfect walking distance from most areas. The bed was very comfortable and the area was quiet at night time. I needed to WFH during our stay and I found the wifi very fast for taking zoom calls.

We also met the owner - who gave us some pointers on renting boats in the area. He had a cute story of how he met his partner through living in this house boat!

What could be improved: Sometimes there was a bad smell - not sure if this comes from the bathroom or sewage or something else?

Unique and cozy local perspective What a fun experience! It feels more like a physical building on the water than a boat, but I have nothing to complain about there. It was really fun to see the water right out of the window. Incredibly cool decor. Incredibly quiet and comfortable. Would absolutely stay here again.

What could be improved: Having no bathroom sink was a little awkward, especially at night, cause you had the option to wash your hands in the shower or climb the spiral staircase to the kitchen sink. The spiral staircase is not for the accident-prone or anybody nervous about tight stairs.

Lovely houseboat and in fantastic setting. The boat was easy to locate, clean, comfortable, and very near to several tram stops.
The living space was lovely and we had lots of wildlife that came to visit during our stay!
As the boat is located out of the main centre, it was nice and quiet too. It was very easy to get to in the tram from the centre.
It had everything we needed for a short stay and I would definitely recommend it to others.

What could be improved: Very steep stairs into the bedroom, which are difficult to navigate with anything in your hands!
This can't be helped though and didn't affect our enjoyment.

Superb Beautifully kept and artistically decorated.
Lovely view.

What could be improved: We only wish there was toilet on the main room .We had to climb down each time .
A small sink in the washroom area would be nice so you can brush yr teeth without needing to climb up.

This is a great little appartment in a superb location, ideal for a short break in Amsterdam The location, the amazing view over the water, the facilities, the little extras like the coffee pods and the stroopwafels. There are several small electric heaters that help to keep the place warm. The kitchenette is really small but works fine to make hot drinks and snacks. With so many eateries nearby you don't need to cook your own meal here! The bed and the shower are good, and since the bedroom is below the water it is really very quiet at night, you can't hear a thing which is incredible for a location in the heart of Amsterdam!

What could be improved: The stairs to the bedroom and bathroom are very steep, so take care. The aircon could not be adjusted as far as I can tell. There is no mirror above the sink (I brought my own shaving mirror).
