First Impressions
When I first spotted Houseboat Amsterdam – Room with a view moored along Amsteldijk, I’ll admit I was a bit skeptical — I mean, how comfortable could a floating hotel actually be? But honestly, this four-star houseboat completely changed my perspective on what Amsterdam accommodation could offer. The moment you step aboard, there’s this immediate sense of calm that you just don’t get in traditional hotels, even though you’re right in the heart of one of Europe’s busiest cities.
The Floating Experience
What struck me most was how surprisingly stable everything feels — you know that gentle rocking motion you’d expect? It’s barely noticeable, which was a relief since I was worried about seasickness. The room itself lives up to the “view” promise in the name, with large windows that frame the Amstel River perfectly. I spent way too much time just watching the canal boats drift by, especially in the evening when the light hits the water just right. The design manages to feel both nautical and modern without going overboard (pun intended) on the boat theme.
Location Perfection
Here’s what the guidebooks don’t tell you about this spot on Amsteldijk — you’re actually positioned perfectly between the museum district and the city center, but far enough from the chaos of Leidseplein to get some peace. I could walk to the Rijksmuseum in about fifteen minutes, and getting to Amsterdam Centraal was surprisingly easy with the tram stop nearby. The couples rating of 9.4 makes total sense because there’s something undeniably romantic about having your own private floating retreat while still being connected to everything the city offers.
Practical Comforts
What impressed me most was how they’ve managed to pack all the essentials into what is, let’s face it, a fairly compact space. The bathroom was cleverly designed — no awkward boat toilet situations here — and the bed was genuinely comfortable, not just “good for a houseboat” comfortable. The heating worked perfectly during my October stay, which honestly surprised me since I wasn’t sure how well these floating accommodations handled the cooler months. There’s even decent Wi-Fi, though I found myself using it less than usual because the whole experience encourages you to disconnect a bit.
Why Guests Love It
Look, this isn’t for everyone — if you need a gym, room service, or a traditional hotel lobby, you’ll want to look elsewhere. But if you’re after something genuinely unique that still delivers on comfort and location, this houseboat hits the mark perfectly. The 9.4 rating isn’t just about the novelty factor; it’s because they’ve actually thought through the details of what makes a stay memorable. I left feeling like I’d experienced Amsterdam from a completely different perspective, literally and figuratively, and isn’t that exactly what travel should do?

What Our Guests Say
Exceptional great view, great location
We enjoyed a lovely 5 day stay in Amsterdam on the houseboat, which is centrally situated. We loved the fact that the houseboat was really centrally situated. It is completely self-contained and had everything we needed. Watching the activities on the river was really fun and we loved the local birdlife too!
What could be improved: Our stay was perfect - no complaints! Although the room is quite compact, it is perfect for two guests and has all the necessary amenities. Public transport and Ubers are all easy to reach.
Exceptional Wonderful view watching the boats cruising the river
Owner was very welcoming
What could be improved: Bathroom is small and less private feeling than many but not an issue when staying with spouse or partner
A PERFECT DUTCH EXPERIENCE The location was absolutely fabulous. We enjoyed sitting and watching the boats go by right outside our window. The space is small but it is amazing how well laid out it was. The bonus was the shower which can often be extra small in space of this size but the design of it was perfect and larger than you'd expect. Wendelein provided us with great advice on where to eat. We honestly feel this is a small gem and worth booking for an true dutch experience.
Great The region, The Pijp, is just lovely, young, artsi, with markets. The room has an amazing view, like sailing the whole time
What could be improved: Mind that the land lady "visited" the room while we were gone, moved a furniture and 2 towels. Also mind that she lives right next to the room. She's the nicest person but there's some sort of privacy issue
Great place for a couple Great, unique experience. Centrally located with an exceptional view. Everything you need for a short and comfortable stay in Amsterdam.
Excellent stay right on the water. On the water, clean and comfortable
What could be improved: Nothing
We will come back - in love with Amsterdam and the houseboat! 😍 Great houseboat experience!
The owner was super caring and helpful before and during the stay (she answered every question, was sending recommendations for getting there from the airport and for restaurants, took care of our needs,…). We had one colder, rainy day during our stay but the floor heating was on - so no freezing at the boat at all.
In addition, the boat was clean and the availability of a little kitchenette enabled us to cook coffee and tea in the morning.
The houseboat is beautifully situated at the Amsel. We had a short distance to the “Grachten” (canals), the Vondelpark and also to the museum quarter (Van Gogh,…).
What could be improved: If you want some privacy when traveling with a friend it might not be the right choice. The boat is a good choice for a short trip to the beautiful city Amsterdam, but you have to know that it is a cosy place. In our case it’s been a great choice but you have to know that the boat is quite compact: sleeping room with a little niche for the coffee machine and kettle and a little fridge, bathroom incl. toilet - that’s it. There’s not a lot of space for big suitcases or a wardrobe. So be aware that it’s the better choice for shorter city trips. ;-)
Lovely experience, I will do it again Very nice experience of sleeping in a houseboat, very easy check in, helpful host, nice location
What could be improved: Room and bathroom a bit small
Exceptional The beautiful view 😍
