First Impressions
Hotel van de Vijsel sits right on Overtoom in the Oud-West district, and honestly, the location couldn’t be better if you’re looking to experience real Amsterdam life. This four-star boutique hotel has this effortlessly cool vibe — not trying too hard, but clearly put together by people who actually understand what travelers want.
The Neighborhood
You know what I love about staying here? You’re literally steps away from Vondelpark, which means morning runs or evening strolls are basically mandatory. The Oud-West area has shed its gritty past and become this fantastic mix of local cafés, vintage shops, and proper Amsterdam brown bars where tourists haven’t completely taken over yet. The tram stops right outside, so getting to the city center takes maybe ten minutes — but honestly, you might find yourself spending more time exploring this neighborhood instead.
The Room Experience
The rooms are what I’d call smart design — they’ve managed to pack everything you need into spaces that feel comfortable rather than cramped. Each room has these large windows that let in tons of natural light, and the beds are actually good quality (I’m picky about this stuff). The bathrooms are modern without being sterile, and there’s enough storage space that you won’t be living out of your suitcase for the entire stay.
Dining and Social Spaces
The ground floor restaurant serves this interesting mix of international dishes with Dutch influences — I mean, it’s not groundbreaking, but it’s solid food and the atmosphere is relaxed. What really works is the lobby area, which doubles as a co-working space during the day. You’ll see a mix of hotel guests and locals with laptops, which gives the whole place this lived-in energy that I really appreciate.
Why Guests Love It
Here’s the thing about Hotel van de Vijsel — it gets the balance right between being polished enough for business travelers but relaxed enough that you don’t feel like you’re staying in some corporate chain. The staff actually seem to enjoy working there, which shows in how they interact with guests. Plus, the combination of being in a real Amsterdam neighborhood while still having easy access to all the tourist spots makes it work for pretty much any type of traveler. It’s not trying to be the fanciest place in the city, but it delivers exactly what it promises.

What Our Guests Say
A great place to stay in Amsterdam We chose this hotel because of the proximity to the restaurant we were eating at, and I would go back to it, no matter what we were doing in Amsterdam. It is close to public transport, easy to get to and from the airport and Amsterdam Centraal. We upgraded to a double comfort room which was well worth the extra expense. The staff were fantastic, and the being able to leave our luggage there before check-in was most helpful.
Good Cool, great location
What could be improved: Tiny
Good hotel, great staff, great location Great location, good food and excellent staff. We watched them deal with some very tricky American customers and they maintained their calm and professionalism
What could be improved: We missed the discounted parking.
Very good Good location with access to trams within a very short distance.
Highly recommended if in Amsterdam Room spacious considering how small accomodation are in Amsterdam.
Just 4 minutes walk from the tram stop to get into Amsterdam central and close to oaks, museums and restaurant
Good Clean, good layout
What could be improved: Had to wait for staff to let you in the front door, had balcony but couldn’t use it to smoke so had to go down stairs each time and through the whole front door policy
good location, nice room Location is great! nearby many attractions and walkable distance to all of that. Room is nice, not too small able to open the luggage perfectly
What could be improved: there’s street renovation in front of the hotel and it’s quite hard to walk through with luggage
Very nice. The room was clean & comfortable.
What could be improved: Would like to have had a refrigerator in the room.
Great Hotel Great hotel just on the outside of the canals. 10 minute walk into the action. Very clean and great rooms.
What could be improved: I do think the breakfast was very expensive for what was provided to us in comparison to other places around Europe.
Quiet and comfortable hotel in a great location near to trams and the museums. Quirky, fun design. Lovely room and very comfortable. Good breakfast selection. Friendly and helpful staff.
What could be improved: No hair conditioner! 🙀
