First Impressions
Walking into Hotel Okura Amsterdam – The Leading Hotels of the World, you immediately sense this isn’t your typical European hotel experience. The lobby has this serene, almost meditative quality that hints at the Japanese heritage — clean lines, warm woods, and an understated elegance that feels refreshing after wandering Amsterdam’s bustling streets. It’s a five-star property that doesn’t need to shout about its luxury credentials; the quality speaks for itself in every detail.
The South District Location
Honestly, the Ferdinand Bolstraat location took me by surprise in the best way. You’re in Amsterdam Zuid, which means you’re away from the tourist chaos of the city center but still perfectly connected. The Museumplein is literally a ten-minute walk — I mean, you can practically see the Concertgebouw from here. What I love is that you get to experience Amsterdam like locals do, with proper cafés and shops around the corner instead of endless souvenir stands.
The Room Experience
The room I stayed in perfectly captured that Japanese attention to detail the Okura brand is known for. Everything has its place, from the precisely positioned slippers to the way the curtains glide silently across the windows. The bathroom — well, it’s basically a small marble sanctuary with a soaking tub that actually fits a full-sized human being. You know what struck me most? The silence. Despite being in a major city, the soundproofing creates this peaceful cocoon that lets you truly unwind.
Dining and Amenities
The hotel’s restaurant scene is where things get really interesting. Ciel Bleu, their two-Michelin-starred spot on the 23rd floor, offers views that stretch across the entire city — though honestly, the food would be worth it even without the panorama. For something more casual, there’s the Sazanka, which serves some of the most authentic Japanese cuisine I’ve found outside of Japan. The spa on the lower level feels like a hidden retreat, complete with traditional Japanese treatments that melt away any travel fatigue.
Why Guests Love It
This place works because it offers something genuinely different in Amsterdam’s hotel landscape. While other luxury properties focus on Dutch heritage or contemporary design, Hotel Okura brings this unique East-meets-West sensibility that feels both sophisticated and calming. The service has that Japanese precision — they anticipate your needs without being intrusive. Whether you’re here for business or leisure, you’ll find yourself in a space that encourages you to slow down and appreciate the finer details, which is exactly what great hospitality should do.
The concierge service in Amsterdam arranges private canal cruises, exclusive art gallery viewings, and curated cycling tours through historic neighborhoods.

What Our Guests Say
Charming, upscale centrally located quality hotel Clean rooms, nice amenities including pool, gym, spa. Comfortable room. Comfirtable bed. Quiet. Provided robes and slippers. Nice large soaking tub. Turndown service. Great location. Tram right outside the hotel, 10 min to the museums. Nice on site restaurant with patio next to the canal.
Great breakfast buffet, fresh and amazing number of choices to select. Helpful staff. Someone left a cute oragami bird on the nightstand, very charming. Has Japanese vibes.
What could be improved: Coffee maker in room hard to use, kept malfunctioning. Special lounge ( Panorama) food offerings somewhat skimpy, disappointing and the coffee maker there kept breaking down as well. Generally very expensive, but excellent quality.
I will happily return to this hotel on my next visit. The hotel is great, everything is clean and beautiful, the staff is kind and available to help.
Amazing large room.
Breakfast is too crowded with people and it is difficult to find a private place.
Our go to hotel for a great stay in Amsterdam We have stayed here several times and it’s definitely our preferred hotel in Amsterdam. It is also great for families. The staff is very welcoming and helpful, the rooms are comfortable (especially the beds) and the restaurants are exquisite. The location in the “Pijp” neighbourhood is great. I could also recommend the spa facilities.

Exceptional Our room overlooked the Amstel River. The breakfast buffet was fabulous, lots of variety and quality food.
