First Impressions
Walking up to Hotel Nicolaas Witsen on a quiet side street in Amsterdam City Centre, you immediately get the sense this is one of those places locals actually know about. It’s a three-star property that doesn’t try to be something it’s not — just a well-run hotel in an absolutely stellar location. The building itself has that classic Amsterdam charm without being overly touristy, and honestly, the entrance feels more like stepping into a boutique guesthouse than a typical hotel.
Location & Neighborhood
Here’s what I love about this spot — you’re literally in the heart of everything, but on Nicolaas Witsenstraat, which is just quiet enough that you’re not dealing with the chaos of the main tourist drags. I mean, you can walk to the Rijksmuseum in about ten minutes, and the canal ring is right there. The couples who stay here clearly get it (they rate the location 9.2), and I can see why. You’ve got that perfect balance where you can stumble back from dinner without navigating crowds, but you’re still close enough to everything that matters.
The Room Experience
The rooms are what you’d expect from a solid three-star — clean, comfortable, and thoughtfully designed without any unnecessary frills. What surprised me was how quiet my room was, considering how central the location is. The windows actually block out most of the street noise, which isn’t always a given in Amsterdam hotels. The beds are genuinely comfortable (not just hotel-marketing comfortable), and there’s enough space to spread out your stuff without feeling cramped. You know what? Sometimes that’s exactly what you need.
Breakfast & Daily Rhythms
The breakfast setup is pretty straightforward — they do both continental and buffet options, and while it’s not going to blow your mind, it’s definitely solid. I actually appreciated that they keep it simple rather than trying to do too much. The coffee is good, there’s enough variety to keep you happy for a few days, and the timing works well if you’re planning to get out and explore early. Plus, the breakfast area has this nice, relaxed vibe that eases you into the day rather than rushing you out the door.
Why Guests Love It
Look, this isn’t the fanciest hotel in Amsterdam, but that 8.8 rating tells you everything you need to know — they’re doing the important things really well. The location score of 9.2 is honestly hard to beat, and when you’re in a city like Amsterdam where getting around efficiently makes such a difference, that matters more than marble bathrooms or fancy amenities. It’s the kind of place where you feel like you made a smart choice rather than just an expensive one. If you want to be in the center of things without paying center-of-things prices, this is exactly the sort of find that makes a trip feel successful.

Superb The location was great, the staff were helpful and friendly, and the room was clean and comfortable
A wonderful hotel in the heart of Amsterdam We had a marvelous time in Amsterdam, and our choice of hotel was a part of that. Nicolaas Witsen was perfectly situated just outside the centre (and so nice and quiet) but within easy reach of all sites and amenities. Our days mostly started with a leisurely stroll up Utrechtstraat towards or into the Old Town, and they mostly ended bac in Utrechtstraat at one or other of the wonderful restaurants there. The hotel was friendly and welcoming, our room was cosy and well furnished and the breakfast buffet was great - the highlight being home-made pancakes on demand! We couldn't have asked for a better base to explore this beautiful city.
The staff were very friendly and helpful. Very quiet location but convenient as well. Clean. The staff were very friendly and helpful. Very quiet location but convenient as well. Clean.
A really comfortable and enjoyable stay The hotel in conveniently situated on a quiet street but easily walkable to the centre of the city. Staff were all great. Friendly and helpful. Breakfasts very good and the beds were the most comfortable hotel beds I have slept in .
What could be improved: Nothing
Great find, would stay again! Great location, easy to walk into central Amsterdam and very close to De Pijp which has great food and indie shops.
What could be improved: The quadruple room was quite small for a family of 4 but it was fine for 3 nights.
